Updated: 20 August 2010

For 2009, I started a section on education help from March till June. However, I continue to receive inquiries on education-related topics, and may be opening a separate blog/website on that later. Meanwhile, I decided to start the education help earlier, starting this month. I’ve also opened a Facebook Page, so readers who use FB can check out updates there.

Due to the length of the information, I’ve split the content of this page into 6 categories. Refer the categories below.

indicates information updated in the last 2 weeks.

I’ve split the content of this page into 6 categories:

Anna i finished my spm studies in 2008!!!
i was doin my diploma studies in politeknik in Electronic enggineering~!!
but i stopped studing there due to some family problem!!!
nw i wanna continue my studies in some private college!!!
so due to my family situation im have to stay with my family and continue my studies!!!i So i have to run up and down to my college and at the same time i have to take care of my family!!! so im here to ask you diploma and foundation which is better????

    • poobalan says:

Its a pity that you have to give up politeknik, as it offers low fee plus opportunity to apply to local uni.

since you are able to apply to diploma in politeknik, then i think your results are quite OK. If your aim is to do degree, then do the foundation and continue degree at the college. Remember that if you take up foundation program, if you plan to jump college, need to check if the foundation results are recognised by other colleges. Also, foundation program gives you about one year time to think about career options. After foundation, you can decide which degree to do.

if you plan to work or not sure about continuing, then do the Diploma. After diploma, you can still continue degree in same college or other places, depending on the recognition of the diploma certificate.

another thing to check is cost. pls calculate the following:
(cost of Foundation + cost of Degree) and compare it with (cost of Diploma + cost of Degree). in some cases, doing diploma and the degree is cheaper than the foundation route.

    Hello there,
I’m in lower 6, taking physics as a core subject, alongside Mathematics T, Chemistry, MUET, and Pengajian AM.
Until now, I’ve never studied nor revised for major examinations.
Now, I have no option to lose in form 6 because I’m the third lowest ranking in the whole form in my school.
Trouble is I have no idea how to study because I really do not know how to study.
Meanwhile, my dad is trying to talk me into taking Communications in MMU but I really want to continue form 6.

Should I continue Form 6 or listen to my dad?

My SPM results are as follows in case you need them.

    A1 – Mathematics, English
    A2 – Additional Mathematics
    B3 – EST
    B4 – Physics
    C6 – Bahasa Melayu, Chemistry
    D7 – Biology
    E8 – History
    G9 – Moral

    • poobalan says:

Well, if without revising for major exams, you have done better than most students, imagine the potential! :-) Only Moral (which I don’t acknowledge as a subject), Bio and History had some hiccups.

How to study: There’s many ways. You can get some pointers from searching the net, attending tuition centers, attending education seminars, talking to teachers, talking to friends, asking around (like writing in this blog) and so on. Basically, one should know one’s own style first. Do like to write down notes, or draw pictures? when do you feel like want to read/study – afternoon, evening, night, early morning? Can you study alone or need peer pressure? What are your favorite subjects?

For me, I studied in a competitive environment among friends. we had competition to see who writes the best essays, who gets full marks for English or History objective papers, and so on. HEALTHY competition.

Most students draw mind maps and prepare small notes to do revisions. students go for tuition too, even in Form Six. Then you can do past year question papers to familiarize yourself with the exam formats and questions. Maths needs lots of practice, so buy workbooks and do the exercise (I did that for SPM and my Add Maths increased 3 grades!).

I think you stand to lose a lot regardless of where your rank is in that school. Remember that your are just looking from the small perspective of your school, but in reality, you are wasting 1 or 2 years of your life.

Why does your dad wants you to take up a program in MMU? Does he see something that may interest you? How about your ambitions, interests, aims etc? Does it match either his or your current situation? Why did you take up Form Six?

I think you should spend some time this few days to ask yourself the above questions (and even more questions) – give sincere answers. Talk to parents, relatives, teachers, siblings, or counselors, or even write back to me. Clarify, analyse, and decide.

      All the best.

  3. Ana says:

    Dear Sir,

I’ve finished my STPM in 2006, and im unable to continue my studies as my family unable to support me.Anyway i’ve continue to do my part time studies at a private college and im unable to continue as problem arises at my working place and i stopped.
Now it’s been 4 1/2 im working as supervisor in shipping company.
I didnt love the job at all.I always wanted to become a lecturer.
Is there any chance’s for me to continue my studies ? can i apply for teaching? how to apply? I dont mind getting less pay then doin a job that i hate.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Ana,

Great to hear that you have the motivation and spirit to further study. Keep it up!

For being a teacher, you have to apply via MOE website (www.moe.gov.my) when the application opens, but the competition is tough and I’m not sure if old results are accepted. The other option is to try to approach any primary schools near your place and apply for Temp position (you can be a temp teacher using SPM results just to handle primary classes). From there, you can try apply to be a full-time teacher by taking up part-time course which will be provided by Ministry.

As for lecturer, you have to finish degree and preferably Master to get a job.

I would like to say that you should keep your options open. If you like to teach/train/lecture, why not further study in the shipping/logistics industry and later be a trainer in that field?

      • Ana says:

        @poobalan,

        Dear Sir,

Thank you so much for your reply.
        Really thanks alot sir.
As continue my studies on the same field, ..im thinking about it for quite some time, as there’s a center nearby my house offering executive diploma in logistics and management studies offered by UUM.
Sir, if i continue my studies on the same field, what’s the job prospect in future?
Can i continue doin my degree, master in this field?

On the other hand, im having several interest on tamil & law.
If possible i would like to furhter my studies in this 2 .
        Your comment Sir,

        • poobalan says:

firstly, do check if the program has registered with MQA or not. Need to have the MQA number.

          2. Prospect is good, but no necessarily you can get work near your home. if you are willing to venture out, plenty of jobs.

          2. Degree yes. master, i’m not sure. maybe MBA or Master in Mgmt majoring in Logistics.

Tamil – not many job options – teaching in schools, media industry, writing/publication, PR/journalism.
Law – of course in demand.

        • Ana says:

          @Ana,

          Thank you Sir!!!

n i wnt ptptn loan i hope anna will give rite answer tq

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Yogeswari,

firstly, I’m NOT running any college! Not sure what made you think like that! :-)

I suggest you concentrate on July paper- your results not good at all. For diploma, nowadays even with 3 credits you can enrol. check out the popular colleges like masterskill, segi, help, ucsi, assunta, sjmc nursing etc. So, settle your july paper, get at least 3 credits (especially in bm, maths and english). then you can look for further studies.

PTPTN loan you can apply once doing registration to join the program.

    thank you very much anna!!!

  6. RAJAN says:

Vanakam.Im STPM 2008 leaver.Im working due to financial problem that im facing now.But im really interested in doing engineering courses. However my result is not that good enough(PA-B,CHEM-C-,PHY-C-,MATH-D).I really hope you can guide me.I hope that i can persue my studies by february next year. The main problem are im having financial problem and didnot kw where to go.Oh yes,can i do degree?Hw about HND?Really appreciate for your assist.thanks

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Rajan,

Yes you can do degree, but most likely in private college. You can approach colleges near your place or come around to Klang Valley for more options. You can start with diploma and proceed to degree, OR join degree program directly. either way also can. Financial problem – try apply PTPTN loan.

HND term is rarely used now in Malaysia.

      • RAJAN says:

        Vanakam bro,

You means that i can do my degree with this result especially in engineering?
Can you suggest some private institution that provide this?

        Appreciate your reply.

  7. vivek says:

    hi,

Bro, can i get the world top colleges of pilot course `PPL & CPL` list with website and tuition fees.

  8. Jack of all Problems says:

Thanks for replying and I bid my apologies for my late reply. Form 6 throughout Malaysia are supposed to do community service (at least that was what my school governors told us). And my school governors decided that we should decorate the toilets. long story.

    Anyway…
I do love writing down notes with drawings for mini notes, but i’m kind of slow, as in when i’m just halfway trough finishing my notes from the board, the teacher has already erased the notes they had given.
My classmate says I take my own sweet time doing things. He is right though, I feel uncomfortable when there is even a tiny imperfection on my work.
I did mention I don’t know how to study. Therefore i don’t know when is the best time for me to study, but I do want a bit of peer pressure so I can count nights off since my mother is kind of typical over-protective Indian mother who (sadly) does not trust people easily.
My favourite subject is Mathemathics and Physics.
A rivalry is good but my classmates are the living wall. You see, there is a major language barrier between us, my class consists of 13 students which consists of 9 Chinese classmates where only 3 speaks English while the rest jabbers in their native accent. Coincidentally, they are the only ones who actually gives me competition, not only by ranking but they are the only ones who really study alongside a Portuguese dude (who is really friendly but leaves Form 6 early next year as he is planning to join the Air Force).
My dad want me to join MMU because he thinks it is less a burden for me to learn computer based stuff, which is not what I want. I’d prefer to not glue my life on computers as I really want to be an astronomer (not to be confused with astronaut). I took up Form 6 because I feared I would not be accepted into colleges with a G9 in moral and C6 in Bahasa. I also feared for financial problems as my father’s company is shutting down its branch and move to China and disliked the idea of being binded to a loan with a high hope I will obtain a quality scholarship. Which is why I said I can’t afford to lose.
I’m really sorry if my problems are kinda big, I have trouble solving it on my own.

Thank you for actually taking your time to help.

    • poobalan says:

      Hmm,

Let’s look at the studying problem first: no night-classes and classmates not exactly suitable. So where does that leave you? How about tuition? Or look for other Sixth Formers from other schools. Good time to study – if not sure, then try all of them! Try waking up early to revise before going to school. See if you can maintain it for about a month or so. If not, change to after school (late afternoon or evening). If cannot, then at night, until bed time. You have to find a time somewhere, there’s only 24 hours in a day, and lot less of minus school and sleep. You also need to be creative and maximize the free time in school or while traveling. Maths and Physics are easier to study since involve calculation and theories. So, you may be well off by taking tuition or even having the occasional discussion with your class teachers to clear doubts. Your english seems excellent, so no worries there. How is Chemistry and PA?

Astronomy huh? That’s a rarity. You’re actually the first student to tell me so! I guess you are on the right track studying Science stream. Do your parents know about your ambition?

You can go to college because minimum qualification is 3 to 5 credits, and credit in BM.

After STPM, next step is going to IPTA (if you get a place) or go to private college/university (and hope can get scholarship from private sector). You have to aim for 4As in STPM.

      • Jack of all Problems says:

@poobalan, I asked my friends for tution centres, most of them came up with “The class is full, try next year, maybe got space.” or “I don’t go for tution, dude”. I’ve decided to go for tution next year, unless if my friend found me a spot in his class.
I am not aware of another school in my town which offers science stream. Since school holidays are next week, I’ve five weeks time to get ahead.
Physics is not as exactly as you say it is. There are lots of derivation work and memorising theorems, laws and formulaes and who created them and why. At least up to where my teacher has taught me.
Ah, i nearly forgot, I have trouble completing examinations, English for example, it takes me 1 hour to complete a 40 minute question. My chemistry is actually my worst subject now. whereas PA is actually easy but time consuming for me.
A lot of my teachers say its an impossible dream but only few rooted for me an bid me luck.
My parents do know about this but laughed it off.
I am not going to aim for 4 A’s but I am gonna grab all 4A. Either 4 flag or fall flat.
        Thank you.

        • poobalan says:

OK, something’s got moving now – let’s see how the tuition plan goes. AS its holidays soon, you can start to prepare a timetable to study at home. Get your hands on some past year papers – google or buy from shop. That will give you a good idea on what to expect.

Yeah, Physics can be tough, and I did mention theories :-) .

Why does it take you longer to answer the exam paper? Did you analyse the possible reasons? For all kinds of exams – objective, structure, essays? Why not you do this – set timer on your watch/PC/hp and time yourself for a sample exam paper FOR each section of the exam paper. If can time how long it takes to answer each and every question? Maybe due to inability to decide on the answer, or writing out the draft, or not planning according to time. For me, I will set time – for example, if there’s 60 questions and 1.5 hours given, I will target to finish 10 questions every 10 minutes, but skipping those that answers I don’t know. In this way, I’ll cover all 60 questions within an hour, and have balance 30 minutes to go through those unsure or to recheck doubtful answers.

Good spirit! Wish you all the best.

sir,i am currently studying in marine engineering department in ungku omar polytechnic ungku omar nd i manage to get jpa scholarship.cn i continue degree in this field with help of jpa in other country?

  10. mano says:

    hello sir,
is that management course is demanding today? i wish to continue my foundation in management and degree at mmu.some said that business and management are depending on country economic level and are not demanding.is that true, sir?
    thank you….

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Mano,

to a certain extent, many jobs are dependent on the economic situation of a country. if you are planning to study management or business, try to choose a majoring or subjects that will be in demand in near future. AND remember that getting good results means chances for interview and shortlisting is higher.

  11. I finished my STPM in 2008 but couldn’t get a place in public university. Based on my SPM, I got 4A1 BM,Math,Add Math Moral, 2A Eng,Eng for Sci/Tech, 1B and 3C. Now I have decided to apply for teacher training but I don’t know how to apply. Please help

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Tan,

for teacher training, you have to check MOE website for intake details. you can also study in private uni like UNISEL and UNITAR for degree in educatiion which is recognised by government and can work in school. OR wait for next university intake and apply with the SPM leavers.

  12. priya says:

my name is priya.what credit need to become a tamil school teacher???

    • poobalan says:

      Priya.

well, definitely you need A in tamil language, plus strong credit or A in subjects like english, maths, science, pendidikan seni. minimum need 5 credits in total.

  13. riyani says:

    hi sir…
currently i am studing lower 6 arts stream..this is my SPM results.

    BM-A1
    BI-B3
    MATHS-A1
    SEJ-A1
    MORAL-A2
    ADD MATHS-B3
    BIO-B3
    CHE-B3
    PHY-C6
    EST-B3

the subjects that i have choosen in form 6 are PA,SEJARAH,BM,EKONOMI….
The school has offered me science stream but i preffer to be in arts stream…

now im having a problem sir. I found sejarah is quite difficult because too much to study..i can do well in ekonomi..PA is also ok…bm is quiet tough too…
I would like to know what are the requirement to pursue my studies in local U…Can be tell that pursuing my studies in U is my big dream… and my choices of ambition are lawyer, economist, accountant, any government job or studing social science…
sir, please help me… am i in right track???

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Riyani,

Well, let’s look at your two statements : ambition and dream. ambition is to be lawyer, economist, accountant, “any” govt job or study social science. that’s quite a big group of ambition. Maybe you need to trim down a bit. govt job got many types. its like working in a very, very big company – you can be a lawyer, engineer, manager, doctor, teacher, nurse, soldier, policeman, clerk, driver, accountant etc. in govt, there’s also a job called PTD which any degree holder can apply for – you can end up in high positions by being a PTD. So what job do you want to do? Studying social science is not exactly an ambition.

your choice of subjects are ok, but why not taking accounting since you want to be accountant? and why choose BM?

your dream: to enter local uni, you must get minimum 2.0 in PA AND at least two C in any other two subjects. your overall results should be 3.0 above to really secure a place in local uni, if you ask me.

      • riyani says:

        @poobalan,
thanx alot sir… i didnt take accounting coz i dont have basic in it…
and i choose BM coz it will be easier for me to apply for government job in future…
and i feel i can do well in STPM since i have strong basic in SPM..but im scared sir… what do you mean by principal?? which grades are principal??

        • poobalan says:

          Hi Riyani,

Well. Sejarah is tough since got lots of things to memorise. BM at STPM level is not related to government job. They just need minimum credit in SPM.

I suggest you read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sijil_Tinggi_Persekolahan_Malaysia to understand about STPM first.

Then, you go to here: http://www.um.edu.my/_system/media/downloadables/undergraduates/stpm.pdf which lists what qualification is needed to enter UM ( i just picked this uni as example, but its similar for all IPTA).

If you can still change your subjects, try to substitute Sejarah and BM with something else. Talk to your teachers. Can try Maths S, Pengajian Perniagaan, or English Literature.

BTW, i mentioned wrongly earlier. you must get at least C in two other subjects besides PA. Principal is C- and below.

        • riyani says:

          @riyani,
thanx sir…. i think i cant change the subjects since i start my revision and so on…
last question sir… with the subjects that i chose, what are the studies i can pursue in U and what are the occupations related to the subjects that i choose???

          • poobalan says:

            Hi Riyani,

well with BM, Sejarah, Ekonomi, you still have good career paths to study. refer back to the link to UM. I guess with Ekonomi, you can try for degree in economy. With Sejarah and BM, you can go for Social studies, Law, Language, Media/Mass Comm etc. There’s plenty to choose from.

  14. riyani says:

thanx alot sir….gud job, carry on sir…

  15. mano says:

    hello sir,
may i use my spm results to study at public universities? will they accept or must hold stpm?
    thank you…

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Mano.

yes you can use SPM results for public uni in these cases:

      1. to apply for education courses (primary school teaching) at upsi
      2. for kementerian pendidikan teaching program (study overseas)
      3. diploma programs in 11 public uni in malaysia
      4. foundation programs in UM (only if you are bumiputera)

for all other cases, need STPM or diploma from politeknik.

  16. dharhany says:

    Dear Sir,

My son just complete his SPM.
Please advice how and where can he apply to do pilot.
Where and how to apply for loans?
    Thank you.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Dharhany,

refer to our govt department: http://www.dca.gov.my which is the Civil Aviation Dept. They have the FAQ and guidelines. FYI, the pilot program is not a normal diploma/degree study, but is for a license, so you can’t apply for PTPTN or academic-related loans. One option is to wait for airlines companies’ advertisements for cadet pilots. MAS, SIA, Air Asia all offer such programs. Your option would be bank loans only, as far as i know.

  17. confused says:

    Hi sir,

I’ve just finished STPM examination this year, 2009. I chose to do Sixth Form as I wouldn’t know what courses to take yet at that moment, so I went into a science stream class. I thought I would like to be a veterinarian, but my science subjects weren’t that good. So I tried to study in Form 6 but I’ve lost interest in pursuing to study in these subjects as they don’t really interest me…
I was having Biology as my core subject, and I did very badly in my Chemistry as I’ve never passed it in every exam during F6… So, I think there’s no way I can be a veterinarian anymore.

But all along I preferred doing Maths, I wouldn’t say I did very well, but I like this subject way better than the others. I thought of taking Accountancy course(because I’m doing better in Maths?) in university but I don’t have the basics since Form 3! All along I’m in science stream classes, following my siblings’ footsteps… I’m really bad at making decisions and I know it’s really, really too late to regret now.
Courses I may be thinking to pursue: Business, IT, accountancy, some jobs related to animals
Should I immediately apply to study Accounts? Will it be too late?

I’m sorry for all the trouble caused and thank you very much to go through my problem.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi confused,

well, if you want to study in private colleges, there’s pathway for study accounting from basics, so its not much of a problem. but do note that accounting is more than just numbers. best if you talk to the counselors or those working in accounting field. or do search the internet for “career in accounting” or similar key words. if its business or IT, not much of a problem. you can even enrol now using spm results or wait till stpm results are out. its not late to study accounting. you take the academic path (diploma/degree) or the professional cert path (lcci -> acca). be sure to visit http://www.accaglobal.com the official ACCA website to get some ideas.

as for veterinary studies, i’m not sure of private colleges offering such programs. but, if you can get through stpm with passes in science subjects, can give a try.

jobs related to animals – i guess zoology, veterinary science, animal husbandry etc will fit into this. but again, i’m not sure of private colleges that offer such programs.

I am currently being in a dilemma. I do not know whether I should choose pharmacy as a course to be studied.Pharmacy is a tough course but it provides a good opportunity in finding a good job with a high salary in Malaysia or overseas.I am interested in Chemistry but I am weak in Physics.I did not take Physics in my A-level exam.I am currently waiting for my A2 exam result. So should I choose this course?Which institution to study pharmacy course is better?..I am currently considering IMU or UCSI.I decide to study locally although I have the chance to go overseas because my dad cannot afford those expensive cost of living and studying overseas…

    • poobalan says:

Hi Janiv, if you are interested, the go for the course you like. I believe if you like what you do, then its more better than suffering in a job you don’t like. so, up to you on what career to focus on, but “how much money can earn” should not be the main criteria.

For pharmacy, need to have biology or physics qualification. So, you better check with the colleges you are interested in.

As for which is better, i’m not sure. as long as the course is MQA accredited, it should be ok.

  19. suresh says:

    hi,

bro universiti malaya give MBBS and other like UKM,UPM,USM, UMS,UNIMAS give MD …..

bro can u explain what are the differences between MBBS and MD …..because of the UM is the highest qualification and others just lesst from UM…

can u explain which is the best to study ?

    thank you.

    • poobalan says:

Hi Suresh/Prasath/Vivek/Sangeetha (all whom seem to be from one location!):

MBBS is the british (commonwealth) style, so you’ll find it in many “older” universities or those who where under british rule. the MD is is US and other european country style. Both are undergraduate programs. HOWEVER, in UK and US, there’s a separate MD program which is like post-graduate studies or conversion program for medical studies.

so, both is same, in context of malaysia.

as for continuing studies using foundation of health science from Masterskill, you have to ask them which uni recognises their foundation program AND please cross check with those uni as well. Everything must be in black and white. Never believe all verbal communication or you may end up wasting a lot of money and time. Masterskill website says the foundation can be used for degree in pharmacy or health science as La Trobe uni.

I’m not sure of the fees for MBBS at MAHSA. you have to ask them.

Malaysian medical council only verifies medical courses (doctor). medical imaging technology is not a program to be a doctor, so its not relevant to MMC. Recognition is for program, not uni. job prospect is there for medical imaging technology as malaysia is being promoted for medical tourism, and more hospitals are set up. i’m not sure about salary, but i don’t know of any degree holders working using the qualification because its quite new. most are diploma or certificate holders.

i’m not sure if diploma in paramedic science or medical assistant can allow you to continue degree in medicine at year 2 or higher. why not check with MSU in shah alam, i think they have some sort of bridging program.

    Dear sir,
I’ve just finished my spm.I’m waiting for my results.I’ve applied for matriculation and local university.I dont want to take stpm.I’m so scared andgetting tensed eventhough my parents always tell i would get good results.I have give my best but i couldn’t do anything becouse always thinking about result

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Komalavani,

Cool ya, put school and spm and stpm out of your mind! its time to relax, enjoy life a bit, maybe get a part-time job somewhere, go visit relatives…DO SOMETHING! your parents are right, you will do well in SPM, and yes you have tried your best. So, why not we leave it to the Guy upstairs to figure it out. :-)

you can start to explore possible places to study. you already applied for matric and IPTA, but do give a chance for the private colleges. attend their function coz some of them offer good seminars on careers etc. maybe can learn something there.

this will be a good time too, to learn a new hobby or brush up on some skills. relax, have fun, enjoy life, and let things go on..worrying won’t solve your problems, but just increase the wrinkles on your face :-)

      hi vivek,

yeah, i have mentioned earlier that the program mentioned in paper and radio is not on their website. so, i can’t really comment on it. you can call up kasturi for the MQA code. MQA website seems to be down at the moment, so i can’t check it there.

    Dear sir ,

i’m a spm leaver this year, 2009 .. i wanted to know more about the physiotherapy courses . do this courses need to study foundation 1st and do ucsi offer this courses ?? physiotherapy is not a popular courses in local though .. can u help me ?? thx

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Jacqueline,

Physiotherapy is a good course, and gaining popularity as more and more hospitals open up in the country. However, i worry that the surge in student intakes may cause an oversupply of graduates in the future. Hopefully not so, but I don’t have any statistics to show on intake and demand.

The diploma doesn’t need you to take foundation programme. Usually a minimum of 3 credits is enough for you to study physiotherapy, but some colleges may ask for 5 credits. You only take foundation after SPM if you want to study a degree program, for diploma no need foundation.

From what i checked in UCSI website, physiotherapy is not offered there.

Others that offer: Masterskill, MAHSA, Segi, ACMS, UNISEL, AIMST, and many others.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Kumar,

Great to hear that your independent and able to study with your part-time job. As you mentioned your course is not recognised by m’sian govt, then you can forget about majority of the m’sian scholarship providers. the best option is to try for those at Ireland or commonwealth-based providers.

however, if you still want to give a try, then MCEF or MIED is probably suitable place to start.

    Dear Datuk B.Sahadevan,

My name is Thatchanamoorthy Purnshatman, a Malaysian student who is being offered a place to pursue PhD at Brunel University, UK. I’ve completed Master at University of Southern Queensland, Australia in which I did a research on Breast Cancer (non-clinical) dataset classification using Machine Learning Technique. During my research period I’ve learned a lot more techniques to detect the cancer. Further to that, I would like to now research the use of Intelligent Data Analysis and related techniques to detect tumors from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) images. To expand my current research, Brunel University, UK as offered a place for me to work on my research and opportunity to learn the technology which in return I could latter implement in Malaysian Medical Industry.

With death rate increasing yearly in Malaysia and 70,000 new cases being diagnosed every year. It is very important to look at the use of technology in detecting cancer. As quoted on MAKNA (National Cancer Council) website recently, ‘Doctors are still working on accurate screening method to detect cancer’. Presently, in Malaysia’s Medical Industry we have X-rays, CT scans, and MRI to detect the cancer. In my research, I’ll be exploring the next level of Cancer detection, which is through Machine learning. The intention behind my research is that through the use of advance machine learning techniques, automatic or interactive tumor detection will be developed, which will lead to an earlier and more accurate diagnosis; in turn leading to better patient treatments. As we all know, the earlier a cancer is detected the higher are the chances for the patient to survive. Exposure to machine learning in Malaysia is very less therefore; there is a lot of room for development and will open door for more research in a lot more other industry and researchers.

I am writing this, after numerous attempts of applying for a scholarship on which I didn’t receive any proper responses. I’ve also sent letters seeking for scholarship to numerous government bodies including the Prime Minister’s office, JPA, Commonwealth scholarship, private hospitals, research centers, and private industry. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if my letters has reached to the correct personnel as I’ve not received any feedback.

My dream has always been to contribute my technological knowledge on research towards medical industry and my family has always been the biggest support for my dream. My parents contributed all their EPF money and sold their house to pay for my Master for the past 2 years in Australia. My parents cannot afford for my PhD, hence I am looking for a sponsorship or a scholarship that can support my PhD. Organizations or individuals who could help me will indeed help the Medical Industry of Malaysia which will indirectly save more cancer patient. As mentioned above, with the growing rate of cancer we will not know who the next cancer patient is and this includes our loved ones and us. This research will help all of us in Malaysia especially cancer patients to detect their cancer earlier which will give them higher chance to survive. My research is my passion so I take this opportunity to seeking for sponsorship/scholarship from an appropriate organization to achieve our medical goals.

      Hi Thatchanamoorthy,

How about scholarship options at the Brunel itself? PhD studies do offer option for the candidate to earn some income via teaching or tutoring, and chances to apply for grants.

      2. Another option is to get employed with local/foreign university, and then get them to sponsor your study. you can ask brunel to postpone your application for a sem or two while you get a job.

    Dear Sir,
I am a 2006 spm leavers with 9A1, 2A2 and 1B4. I had missed the stpm due to some private reasons in 2007 and now would like to retake the stpm and muet as private student in this year 2010. So after I took the STPM and MUET, if my result is ok, can i get a chance of registering into the local university for 2011?
    Thanks…

    • poobalan says:

      Hi School Leaver,

Your SPM result is very good, congrats. Yes, you can take STPM but I’m not sure if you can join a school with the 2009 SPM leavers or need to study as private candidate. Can you ask at your school or the nearest PPD office? you can also email the Kementerian Pendidikan (www.moe.gov.my) to get their official reply.

And yes, if you take STPM in 2010, you can apply for IPTA in 2011 intake.

      • School Leaver says:

        Thanks a lot, Sir.
Now I am partime worker and self study for stpm. And I’m intend to take the Muet April 2010. Then I would choose the subjects that can self study such as PA, BM, GEO and either sejarah or math S. Now I’m start buying revision books and make notes for revision everyday after working. So, is this way works because last time I did so in spm… I made notes myself from text book and study it…

        • poobalan says:

          Hi again School Leaver,

I really admire your spirit. If only all students are like you, parents and teachers will be thanking their lucky stars!

However, I have to caution you that STPM takes more effort and time compared to STPM. I used to shake legs while doing SPM, but STPM was tiring and energy-sapping. Just to share my experience.

You’ll need to get revision books, sample exam papers, and if can, enrol in tuition for those subjects. You may also need to get in touch with some SPTM teachers who can give guidance from time to time (you can arrange with them to tutor you for specific topics as well, but need to pay la..). but you have to find such teachers.

I wish you all the best.

        • School Leaver says:

          Alright..Thanks a lot sir..
I make such decision because after working at many fields such as hotel, electronic and admin… I found that I love to study… so i take back stpm…
Alrite…I will find some teachers and get some advises from them. And again, do the local uniersities have any age limitation since im 21 yrs old nw?
And the package I take can fitted for any local university???
          Thanks for reply…

        • School Leaver says:

    Hello,

just want to ask.. i graduated from polytechnic on 2008 in medical electronics…
    1)
is there possibility for me to be teacher or i need to get degree in education for that?

    2)
is there is possibility that i will get further study if i apply for upsi for other course than electronics such as maths or BI using my diploma in medical electronic?

    tq.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Joe,

      1. Need to get a degree as the ministry is aiming for all school teachers to be graduates (bachelor degree). Note that you have to apply for IPTA or IPTS like UNITAR and UNISEL. However, you can still try for a job as temp teacher (guru sementara) in schools near your place. You have to ask the HM/office or register with PPD. If you can get even in primary school, you can later go for part-time teaching course and become a full time teacher.

      2. Competition for UPSI is tough, so I can’t really say.

  35. MOna says:

    hello sir,
may i know when would get the form for temporary techer 2010? Hw 2 apply for temporary teaching?
    thank you…

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Mona,

You can visit the PPD or schools near your house. The application is based on if there’s vacancy in the school (teacher going for maternity leave, for example).

    hi bro,

i”m currently doing my stpm taking physics as my core subjects because i like engineering. but now i find that stpm is very difficult. my question is

1.should i continue taking stpm or try for colleges or poly.

    2. what type college is suitable for me

    3. can i still apply for any scholarship or bank loans

4.is going to poly is a better choice

for your information i get 5A and 4B for my spm 2008.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Suresh,

Obviously STPM is not easy as one thinks. Needs lots of effort.

      1. This depends on yourself. Do you think you can get good results that will allow you to apply for IPTA? If yes, then proceed. If not, then apply for college/poly. But poly intake – need to wait till SPM results are out, and you compete with other SPM students.

      2. Well, depends on what you want to study! Many colleges offer engineering related courses. Perhaps you can find one near your hometown. As long as the course is MQA recognised. Go to education fair this weekend. Refer to my Education Fair page in this blog.

      3. Yes, you can apply using SPM results, but your results are average, so chances are slim. Bank loan depends on your parents financial capacity.

      4. Poly offers diploma level studies only, but its cheaper. If you have a choice, better do degree – try UTAR or TARC.

    good everning sir,
    im nisha,
currently im at home just finish writting my a-level.because i wrote my alevel in a semi gov college i’m lucky enough that i can make choice either entering a private or public univerity.
i’m very intrested in pursuing my degree in medicine but im confused that should i do it in local or overseas.
well my question is,is our country are capable enough of giving a high class medical study??and if i studied locally would i be qualified enogh to work overseas if i want to some day??
if our country could give us the best medical study with all the facilities, why jpa are sending their student to overseas??i’m not being sacarstic but it’s a thought that had always been cyling in my mind.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Nisha,

Our country is capable of giving high class medical study. But the competition is tough to enter local IPTA or even IPTS (there’s about 2200 places only for medical studies, if i’m not mistaken). That’s why most students go to overseas. If you have the cash and able to secure a place overseas or local private uni, then go ahead, because competition for IPTA is tough.

If you studied locally, not all countries around the world will accept your degree. You need to check with the respective countries where you want to work. I guess UM is most recognised. Not sure about others.

JPA sending overseas as an incentive for the best students after SPM. Anyway, there’s growing calls for scrapping post-SPM scholarship, but offer post-STPM scholarship and retain the best brains locally. Most likely won’t happen in near future.

  40. mugi says:

Sir,i manage to get jpa scholarship for studying marine engineering(diploma).cn i continue my degree un this field after i finish my diploma with help of jpa

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Mugi,

JPA scholarship is for SPM leavers only doing their first degree, so if you want to apply scholarship using diploma results, i’m not sure it will work.

However, if you get a place in IPTA, then you can try apply for other scholarships or loans.

  41. vigneshwari says:

    hello sir,

thank you for your quick response..I have a few doubts…is the jpa scholarship offered to those who excel in stpm?

Besides that, is the jpa scholarship offered to those who have done a-levels really well? Pls refer to the following link(http://www.methodistcollegekl.edu.my/home/58-2008/87-june-2008-a-levels-results-and-university-placement)

Can a person who finished a-levels enter a public university? what does nisha (p) mean by semi gov college?

Could you pls clear my doubts…thank you…

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Vigneshwari,

JPA scholarship (PILN and PIDN) only for SPM leavers. top STPM leavers have to apply place in IPTA and govt will cover the expenses.

From my info, JPA scholarship is for SPM leavers. What happens is that, the SPM leavers who get JPA scholarships are placed in various pre-u programs like a-levels or matriculation in local uni/colleges before being sent overseas.

as far as i know, a-levels leavers can enter uni, but need to make special request to the uni. sometimes its because the students follow parents overseas (like diplomats or embassy staff, so can’t take SPM/STPM). for some of the cases, special provision is made to enter local uni. but again, there’s no clear process for this step.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Tension Gurl,

      1. IT is very broad area, from programming, network, security, management, database, development and so on. I suggest you relook the subjects you take for Foundation IT and see which interests you. If really no topic interests you, then no choice but to change course.

      2. If can, continue in the same college so that you can use the foundation cert to study other courses (talk to college and see to which course you can transfer too).

      3. if you really interested in Hotel Mgmt related courses (under tourism or hospitality programs), then you can TRY applying using the foundation results (which college are u in?) but not necessary the other college will accept the foundation cert of the current college. You can also TRY credit transfer, meaning continue foundation in another college, but again depends on the other college agreeing.

      4. study and work is possible, so what you can do is visit the hotels, shopping complexes etc for jobs.

      5. some colleges like Taylors, Berjaya College (Genting), KDU, SEGI etc all offer chance for PTPTN loan, so you can still study full time.

      6. you should have visited Star Education Fair last week – plenty of options there.

    bm:6C

    math:8E
    add math:9G
    sains pertanian:8E

    biology:8E

so can i continue study for teacher

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Neynah,

I think its not advisable for you to pursue education line as your results are below average. Your option is to improve your SPM results because I doubt a teacher with below average SPM results will be a good role model for students. So, priority is to improve results by resitting SPM. You’ll need a minimum of 5 credits and Credit in BM. Preferably credits in Science and Maths too. Without it, quite impossible to enter IPTA.

she should try to get credit for BM. ask her to resit for BM paper until get credit.

her options are MLVK programs or certificates at giatmara or kolej komuniti.
    ==============================

I have approached her abt re-sits for BM and Maths for which she have prev re-sat and got herself the existing marks. She wasn’t keen on the re-sits since its time consuming. However, she still wants to further her studies.

Her interest was to join the police force, but I’m not too sure if her qualifications would allow her. Next, she said tht she doesn’t mind doing Business Admin,.

The issue here is with her qualifications, colleges are only offering foundations or certificate programs, none in diploma. She is my sister in law and the family would be putting her thru the studies. The family is very much financially challenged.

So, I’m looking for a tertiary provider who could provide her 3yrs degree program, which consists of dip year, adv dip year and then deg year…something like that. Plus some kind of education loan for her studies as well.

I hope it isnt a tall order.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Ms Pillai,

I have mentioned earlier about the options for her. Since her results are quite bad, there’s very, very few options academic-wise. The options are limited towards skills-based programs which means a route that is cert->diploma->degree. There’s no short cuts, AND you should be wary if someone says otherwise. Our regulations are quite clear: minimum 3 credits needed for a diploma program, and minimum 5 for a foundation. For certificates, usually pass in BM or credit in one subject will suffice. I have to reiterate that redoing SPM will be the option if she wants to pursue a diploma or degree.

No provider would offer such a path for a school leaver with such results as you mentioned, unless its some dubious online/unrecognised degree provider. HOWEVER, some education providers do accept work experience as substitute for academic results. Thus, you can find people with 5 years work experience enrolling in excutive diplomas or even degrees.

My advice remains: join some MLVK/short courses/cert programs (most provide loans from PTPTN or HR Ministry). OR go to work and get some experience. OR redo SPM.

    Dear Sir,
I am a private school student. I sat for PMR exam in year 2008 (registered as exam candidate by the private school). This year, I am going to sit for SPM, but as a private candidate (calon persendirian individu).

I’ve checked with Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia Putra Jaya and Jabatan Pendidikan Selangor on the marking system as private candidate. The officer told me that as private candidate, I don’t need PEKA (ujian amali for science student) and project (kerja khusus) for Pendidikan Moral.

However, the officers are not able to provide a definite answer on how to count the marks without PEKA and Kerja Khusus. Without the above, will it affect my overall marks? or I’m loosing those marks as is? As a private candidate how am I going to sit for lisan and oral tests?

Appreciate if you can help me to clear my doubt before I register myself as SPM private candidate.

    Thanks

      Hi Melody,

I’m not sure on the marks calculation for private students. For STPM private students, they take a separate paper to compensate the practical papers (like in Physics). I suppose its the same for SPM level. I suggest you make a visit to the Lembaga Peperiksaan or Jabatan Pendidikan and talk to the persons in charge. If can, get some black and white (official proof).

hi, im currently waiting for spm results. im puzzled if i should choose form 6 or A- levels in private uni.i desired to obtain a full scholarship,as private unis are expensive.Furthermore, i’m stuck in between chemical engineering and pharmacy.i love add maths and chemistry and i intend to do something pertaining to production of medicine, pharmaceuticals and research.do chemical engineers do all these?

    • poobalan says:

      Hi yj,

well, if your forecast results for SPM is good, you can enrol in some colleges and they offer discount/scholarships. its the same when spm results come out. if its good, you can get scholarship from private uni/colleges in malaysia. if its not so good, then your choice will be STPM. But after STPM, chances of getting into IPTA for your preferred course without an excellent result is very low.

Actually, pharmacy uses chemistry very much. chemical engineers may not deal directly with the lab work involved in pharmaceuticals, but not to say it never happened. chemical engineering gives a wider option of career, but pharmacy is a narrower option. so, if you like those things you mentioned “i love add maths and chemistry and i intend to do something pertaining to production of medicine, pharmaceuticals and research”, then go for pharmacy.

    hello there,

i’ve some question to ask.. i finished my stpm in year 2008. Well, due to some personal reason i failed my stpm exam. I’m wondering if i can still take stpm by age 21? is there any age limit for taking stpm? how do i apply for taking the exam? thnks.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Uncertain kymalana,

Yes, you can still can retake STPM. Age limit wise, even elderly people have taken SPM and STPM before. But remember that, the chance to enter IPTA is reduced greatly the older you are. You may have to consider studying part-time or distance learning like with Oum, Wawan, Unitar, Utar, UM etc.

sir, i’m a upper six student this year. i’m science stream student. this year there are a lot of pressure for us.we have been just introduced to programmes like R&D.we need to do it because teachers told that it will be easier for us when we enter university. we also need to be active in co-curiculum. the science subject already are very tough and now this. i’m afraid i will not be able to cope with my studies.please give me some tips on how to manage the time because i’m really desperate now!!!

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Sam,

no one says its going to be a walk in the park when studying for STPM. The competition is tough and the result is not guaranteed (uni intake). as to how to manage time, i guess there’s no great secret formula. its back to basic stuff – planning, discipline, focus, team work, creativity, patience.

you may need to sacrifice many other things – weekends and holidays included. try to group together with students and share workloads, work smart. but that doesn’t mean copying or cheating.

There’s internet which can provide various resources and maybe makes learning easier. Also learning things like mind mapping, mnemonics, helps. if you need tuition then need to arrange for that as well.

as for the new “R & D” program, need to check if its some instruction from ministry/department or initiative by school. i’ll try to ask around.

    • poobalan says:

      Hi Reuben,

That depends on your location, what course/program, and you like weekend/evening/online classes. few colleges/uni offer part-time programs – OUM, UTAR, UM, SEGI, WOU etc.
