Great news indeed:

No words can describe M. Amara’s joy when she was informed that her four grandchildren would be issued birth certificates by the National Registration Department.

“This is help from God. I am very glad that my grandchildren can finally live life like other people. They can now go to school, get driving licences and even get married,” she said.

Her four grandsons – Magaderen, six, Deva, five, Santhos, three, and Yuvan Raj, two months – have never had birth certificates.

They were all issued birth certificates by the NRD after a meeting at the department headquarters yesterday.

Family joy: Krishnan, Kanmani carrying son Yuvan and their other three children (from left) Santhos, Deva and Magaderen holding up the birth certificates at the NRD in Putrajaya Tuesday.

They are the children of Krishnan, 27, who is Amara’s eldest son and N. Kanmani, 26.

Krishnan and Kanmani, together with his other six siblings – Prema, 23, Suresh, 21, Rajakumar, 20, Selvamoorthy, 18, Visaletchumi, 17, and Thanaletchumi, 12 – also do not have birth certificates or MyKad.

Amara’s youngest daughter Thurgathevi, 11, also does not have a birth certificate.

Umno Youth Community Complaint Bureau chief Datuk Muhd Khairun Aseh, who has been helping the family, said the birth certificates were issued after the NRD had verified the children’s status.

“We are very thankful to the NRD for its swift action and cooperation in trying to solve the family’s problem,” he said.

NRD public relations officer Jainisah Mohd Noor explained that birth certificates and MyKads for Amara’s children would only be issued after the department had vetted the documents they had provided.

“The situation looks positive as they managed to provide us with documents from hospitals to show that they were born in Malaysia,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Amara, who has never ventured out of Malacca, and her affected family members were picked up by several MIC representatives at their home in Rembia for the journey to Putrajaya.

“I am happy but at the same time worried as I have never travelled far from home. However, I must make this journey for my family’s sake so that my children and grandsons will get their identification papers,” she said when met at her home before leaving for Putrajaya in a van belonging to the state welfare department.

The plight of the family was highlighted in The Star last Thursday. Following that, Umno and MIC Youth worked together to help the family out of their predicament.

This is the kind of news people want to hear. Unfortunately, its rare. However, good to hear that meeting was set up in two days. Hopefully the family can get their documents within a month.

The 27-year plight of M. Amara, 48, from Rembia, whose seven children and four grandchildren have been living without proper identification papers, may soon end on a happy note.

Umno Youth Community Complaint Bureau chief Datuk Muhd Khairun Aseh said the Home Ministry had assigned a senior officer to personally look into the case.

“We are grateful for the swift response. The National Registration Department has scheduled a meeting in Putrajaya tomorrow. Umno Youth and MIC representatives will bring the family to the meeting,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Muhd Khairun said the bureau needed only two working days since last Friday to set up the meeting and to obtain necessary information for the department.

Umno Youth and state MIC representatives have teamed up to assist Amara in obtaining the necessary identification papers such as MyKad and birth certificates for her children and grandchildren.

The family’s plight was highlighted in The Star last Thursday. Muhd Khairun visited the family the following day to see how Umno Youth could assist in the case.

The affected children are Chrisdan, 27, Suresh, 20, Rajakumar, 19, Selvamoorthy, 17, Visaletchumy and Dhanaletchumy, 12.

All of them do not have birth certificates and MyKad.

Amara’s youngest daughter Turkatevi, 11, and four of her grandsons, age between two months and five, do not have their birth certificates.

Muhd Khairun said the Umno Youth would help accommodate the family if the department needed more time to process their case.

Khir Toyo picked up by police!

Hmmm..i thought I’d never read this news in papers. But surprise, surprise, police “picked up” Khir Toyo and another fella for questioning (one may suspect that could be for their “own protection” or even some sort of publicity gimmick in view of impending party elections):

Former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and a local Umno Youth leader were picked up by the police for questioning in an aborted protest march against veteran parliamentarian Karpal Singh in George Town today.
Mohd Khir’s car was stopped at a junction near Waterfall Hotel as he was leaving with his aides and Permatang Pauh Umno Youth chief Mohd Zaidi Said. They were then escorted by a patrol car to the city police headquarters in Jalan Patani for questioning.

Mohd Khir, an Umno Youth national leadership aspirant, and Mohd Zaidi were later released after police recorded their statements.

Sporting a songkok, and wearing a white shirt and black pants, Mohd Khir was earlier about to lead a protest march from Youth Park in Waterfall to Karpal’s house, located about a kilometer away.

umno youth demo against karpal singh penang 130209 04Umno Youth had planned to demonstrate outside Karpal’s house at 3pm over the DAP leader’s intention to file a lawsuit against Perak ruler Sultan Azlan Shah.

However, Mohd Khir and the protesters aborted their plan about 10 minutes before the protest was scheduled to start when the police warned them of stern action.

Police also stayed guard outside Karpal’s bungalow to thwart any untoward incidents and seized banners with anti-Karpal, anti-Pakatan, pro-Malay and pro-Umno slogans.

Addressing those present with a loud hailer, Mohd Zaidi said: “Even though the police may have stopped us today, our Malay spirit will never die.”

The protesters started chanting ‘Hidup Melayu‘ (Long Live Malays) and ‘Daulat Tuanku‘ (Hail The King) when the police moved in to arrest Mohd Zaidi.

At this juncture, the protestors, some of them sporting red headbands with the words ‘Daulat Tuanku‘, managed to rescue Mohd Zaidi and whisked him away to a nearby car.

However, Mohd Zaidi was later picked up together with Mohd Khir.

The crowd dispersed immediately when George Town police district chief ACP Azam Abdul Hamid raised his voice and gave them a five-minute deadline to disperse.

umno youth demo against karpal singh penang 130209 01Azam later told reporters that the gathering was illegal and the police would have arrested the protesters if they had started to march to Karpal’s house.

Earlier, the police stopped and turned back several buses and vans ferrying protesters at several check points from reaching Youth Park.

Knowing our makkal, this drama will be dismissed as another ploy or publicity stunt. Or worse, to justify arrest of some politicians from the other side.

resort to whatever means necessary says Khairy

resort to whatever means necessary – what does that mean?

Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin has called on party members to “resort to whatever means necessary” to prevent former menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin and his group of executive councillors from entering the Perak state secretariat.

“I urge Umno Youth members to gather outside the gates and do what is necessary to stop the illegitimate menteri besar from entering the building,” he told some 1,000 BN supporters who gathered at a football field near the Ipoh City Council here yesterday to express their support for Sultan Perak Sultan Azlan Shah.

Speaking to reporters later, he denied Perak was experiencing a constitutional crisis, saying that the matter was a “crisis of power”.

“Why can’t Pakatan Rakyat accept the due process of law and admit defeat? When we lost five states in the March 8 polls, we backed out with maturity and magnanimity… It is evident from PR’s denial that they were never a coalition for the people but an alliance based on greed. They fell for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s defection theory and it all backfired,” he said.

Scholarship quota a problem

The PSD scholarship allocation ratio issue is refusing to go away. Since Nazri revealed that all this while normal Malaysian were discriminated by being given only 10% of the scholarship amount, and only this year it has been increased to 45%, the privileged people’s representatives are up in arms. They have been using the “privilege” name but only giving it to certain race while the other privileged groups (in East Malaysia) were left out. And today, MP for Putatan, Sabah threatened Nazri – telling him not to make the Sabahans angry in the Dewan Rakyat (check the Hansard later). That’s because the independent MP keeps on mentioning his race’s rights, thinking that the reduced quota affects his race, forgetting that it affect all privileged people.Even Deputy Prime Minister Najib took a populist stance and said that the quota should be reviewed.

Few days back, Dr S.Subramaniam suggested that only academic criteria is used to determine scholarship recipients. He says:

No matter how good you are at your ECA or your interview performance, you should not be eligible for a scholarship for tertiary education with low academic results

He also gave a very surprising statement – “all Indians students who score 9As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia will be given government scholarships, starting this year, to pursue their studies in local government universities and four local private institutions — Monash, Swinburne, Curtin and Nottingham universities” as decided in the cabinet committee for the indian community. However, I’m unsure if he meant ALL students with 9As and just mentioned Indian students in the context. Since NST also chose to accept the statement, UMNO Youth proclaimed that all students should be given scholarships if the government sets 9As as the benchmark. They said it should not be slanted towards a particular race. Now in this instance, can we say UMNO Youth is meddling in other people’s affairs? Oh right, they’ll say it affects them as well. They can always do that, but others cannot do the same. That’s fairness and justice for you.

If the government wants to use 9As as the main academic requirement, then make sure it applies to all races

UMNO Youth is worried that if given to all races based on 9As cutoff, it will affect government finances. But that’s the point, government only giving to Indians! Ahmad Ikmal of the UMNO youth further disagrees with Dr S.Subramaniam’s idea of using academic results, by suggesting that Public Service Department should also consider the family background and geographical factors. He also suggested that the top 50 SPM achievers be automatically awarded government scholarships to pursue a course of their choice to ensure that the best brains in the country were rewarded.

Well, when it comes to education, MCA will also wants to have its say. According to MCA Youth education bureau chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who is also Deputy Education Minister, the decision to give scholarships for those who score 9As and above in their SPM applies to all!

This is blanket approval given by the government to recognise the students’ hard work

Alamak, that means someone misunderstood what Najib said in the cabinet committee or purposely misleading the Indian community. Third possibility – media misquoted! :-)

Amidst all this, today Nazri announced in Parliament that government will set up a specific scholarship programme under the Public Service Department (JPA) for students who achieve exceptional results in their SPM examination for exceptional students regardless of race, religion or social standing. This was after being bamboozled from all corners due to the scholarship quota.

This is different from the normal scholarship programme, which is given out based on a quota system between bumiputra and non-bumiputra students

He said for example the cutoff results can be 15A1s.

He had a hard time defending the quota for this year (55:45) which according to him was based on racial composition of the country, examination results and family financial background. However, one of MPs said that EPU statistics indicate privileged are 62.1 percent while normal Malaysians are 30-something percent. Balance is “others”.

Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said the ratio was a populist decision as it did not reflect the racial composition and could threaten the interest of the Malays and Bumiputeras while Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan said the PSD scholarship should not be awarded to students from rich families as the parents could afford to finance their children’s education. On the contrary, he said outstanding students from poor families especially those from the rural areas should be given more attention while the conditions loosened for them.

Nazri assured the MPs that Malay and Bumiputera students would account for at least 50 per cent of the scholarship recipients. Says Nazri:

We are not taking a populist stance but wanted to be fair when comes to performance as this cannot be compromised.

So, what would be the fate of the scholarship ratio? Expand the number of scholarships? Reduce the quota for normal Malaysians? Keep quiet until next year? Change the criteria to add location or other parameters?
