He added that only BN could guarantee a better socio-economic well-being for them.Work within the system, he told them, not against it, he stressed. “Continue to place your trust with the Barisan. The Barisan is the future of Malaysian Indians and all Malaysians. “The future will be better if you work within the system and not against it,” he said this morning when opening a one-day MIC special convention for branch chairperson at the Putra World Trade Centre.The convention – attended by about 3,700 branch chairmen and MIC elected representatives – is to prepare the party’s grassroots machinery for the upcoming general election.In obvious reference to Hindu Rights Action Force and the opposition parties, Najib also urged the community members not to be taken in by promises made by those who “stage street demonstrations”. “Do you think your future can be guaranteed by those staging street demonstrations? It is important to send signals to the Indian community that their future lies with the BN,” he said.

He added that the MIC and the community has always been loyal to the BN since independence and urged them to continue that loyalty. He asked the community to work hard to ensure the BN gets the Indian votes in the coming general election.

Legitimate grievances

In return, said the deputy premier, the government would do more for the community, which has long claimed to be sidelined by the government.

He admitted that there were legitimate aspirations and grievances among the Indian community which needed to be addressed.

For starters, Najib said the government would immediately take steps to increase the intake of Indians and non-bumiputeras in the civil service. He said that the Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Sidek Hassan had been asked to ensure that the Indian candidates were not rejected.

“(Mohd Sidek has been asked) Make sure when they (Indians) apply (for jobs), don’t just reject. Make sure the good ones are taken in. By doing that, it will increase employment opportunities for the Indians,” he said.

Similarly more scholarship will be given to Indians pursuing their studies at the public universities. Deserving students will be sent to foreign universities and upon their return, they can join the civil service.

On the status of Tamil schools, Najib said that there was a need to consolidate under-enrolled Tamil schools. “What is important is not the number of pupils, but the quality of education that we provide to ensure upward mobility for the community,” he said.

Najib also touched on the issues of temple demolition, a sensitive issue among the members of the community. Admitting that there were some hasty decision done by the government and local authorities in demolishing some Hindu temples, Najib said that the government would ensure relocation of temples was done orderly in the future. He said the demolition of the Padang Jawa Temple in Klang in November last year, just a few days before Deepavali, should not be repeated.”That was wrong on their part. We are sorry for that,” he added.

Scrap dealers woes solved

Presently much have also been said about the high number of Malaysia-born Indian children without birth certificates. Najib said that the issue was discussed in the cabinet and that these children should have access to education. He also said that it was decided that village heads would be asked to verify the children’s status. “Children born in Malaysia have the right to education. We are a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children,” he said.

On the business front, Najib said the government would also increase the micro-credit loans for Indian businessmen. Similarly complaints made by Indian scrap dealers will also be looked into with the Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo being asked to ensure Indians engaged in the scrap metal trade in the state be allowed to continue with their business. Previously the state government had said that it would stop issuing trading licenses for these traders, mostly Indians.

In recent months the Indian community’s anger has caused some anxiety in the government, fearing that the community would look the other way in the coming election. Much anger has also been directed towards MIC and its president S Samy Vellu.

Hindraf capitalised on this anger in the grassroots by organising a street demonstration on Nov 25 which attracted almost 30,000 Indians. Since then the government has taken action against Hindraf, including detaining five of its leaders under the Internal Security Act.

At the special one-day conference today, Samy Vellu also listed seven grouses of the community which he said the government should immediately address.

Najib touched upon most of the grouses in his speech and promised action.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was also reported today admitting that the number of votes from Indians for the ruling party will likely drop in the coming polls. He said that the “votes will be affected somewhat” as a result of issues raised by Hindraf.

Trust Barisan, Indians told

source

KUALA LUMPUR: The future of the Indian community lies with the Barisan Nasional and they should work within the system and not against it, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. He added that only the Barisan government could guarantee their future by continuing to work towards improving their socio-economic well-being.

“It’s important that this signal be conveyed to the Indians that their future lies by working within the Barisan. “Continue to place your trust with the Barisan. Your future will be better if you work within the system and not against it,” he told a one-day special convention for MIC branch chairmen, which was attended by about 3,000 party leaders at the PWTC yesterday.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the Government also needed to address the aspirations and grievances of the Indian community. “I want to tell you on behalf of the Prime Minister and the Barisan government, that we will do more for the Indian community. “The Barisan leadership is sincere in improving the conditions of the Indians. If there are mechanisms or programmes that need to be made, we can discuss this together in the Cabinet,” he added.

Najib said the future of the Indian community would not be safeguarded by those who led street demonstrations. “What will happen if the Malays in Kampung Baru begin to rise up (in protest)? “We don’t want that because we want to build this nation, and the success of this nation depends on the Indians as well as the other communities,” he added.

Najib slammed critics who accused the Government of practising ethnic cleansing of Indians, saying that such a notion was mind-boggling. “The household income of Indians is RM3,215 – more than the national average of RM3,022, while their relative poverty rate stands at 2.9% compared to 8.3% for bumiputras and 0.6% for the Chinese,” he added.

At a press conference later, Najib said Samy Vellu and other Indian elected representatives could hold discussions with him or Abdullah about the monitoring mechanism to improve the social-economic development of the Indians. “They can see the both of us if they are not happy with how things are being implemented, so that the Government can address the shortcomings,” he added.

He denied accusations by the opposition parties that the Government had disregarded the views and suggestions of the MIC on improving the lot of the Indians.:There are many examples of issues that had been taken up by the MIC to the leadership. “For example, the party had asked for new university licences, assistance for Tamil schools, scholarships and requested for more Indians to be brought into the civil service.”We did and will continue to give consideration to MIC’s requests,” Najib added.

Najib: We will do more for Indians
By : M.K. Megan and Suganthi Suparmaniam
source

KUALA LUMPUR: Much more will be done for the Malaysian Indian community. This was the pledge from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who said grievances facing them would also be tackled quickly. He said although there had been positive developments and progress among Malay- sian Indians since independence, it must also be acknowledged that there were legitimate grievances.

Najib was addressing some 3,900 delegates at the MIC’s one-day special convention at the Putra World Trade Centre yesterday. “We have to address their grievances as fast as possible, just as much as we have to address the grievances of the other communities.”
Najib, however, did not elaborate on what more would be done. “We are going to do something more for the Indian community. The mechanism on how we are going to do this will be discussed at the cabinet. I cannot divulge what happens at cabinet meetings but a lot of time is spent discussing Indian issues,” he said to a standing ovation from the crowd.

The deputy prime minister’s assurance came after MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu had told the convention earlier that the government should address seven major issues pertaining to the Indian community:

greater employment and promotional opportunities in the civil service;

better educational opportunities in public universities, especially in critical courses;

more scholarships;

greater access to entre-preneurship training and micro-credit loans;

equitable participation in the share market;

an effective urban poverty- eradication programme; and,

a dedicated mechanism to monitor public-delivery services.

The deputy prime minister emphasised he was not making this pledge because the general election was near.

Najib also recorded his appreciation for the MIC which had never failed to deliver in the previous 11 general elections. “We have to recognise that the Indian community has always been with the BN and it has been a sincere and a loyal partner of BN.” He said MIC had to ensure that it was still relevant. “Just because MIC has delivered the Indian votes in the past, it cannot guarantee it can continue to do so.

“MIC has to go through the process of strengthening the leadership at all levels and get the confidence of the Indians and then I will be convinced that MIC is the only relevant party representing the Indians. “Even Umno has to go through the process of reinventing itself and MIC, too, has to go through that. You (MIC) cannot rest on your laurels,” added Najib.

“Let me assure you that if there are legitimate, relevant and genuine issues in the Indian community, both the prime minister and I are ever willing to consider those requests. “I truly believe in power- sharing. I believe in a multi-racial Malaysia and we all should live harmoniously.” Najib, also the BN deputy chairman, said it was unfair to say that the current government was involved in ethnic cleansing and had margi-nalised certain communities.

With regard to the controversial demolition of a temple in Padang Jawa, Shah Alam, last year, Najib said it was a mistake to take such action a week before Deepavali. “They waited three years. Why couldn’t they wait for another few more weeks before starting the demolition work? “But I have to say that the deities in the temple were not desecrated as claimed by certain quarters. “But we have to admit our mistake if we have committed a wrong and, if need be, apologise.”

Najib added that it was unfair to accuse Samy Vellu of not fighting for the community. “I will be the first to deny that. He has fought hard and with full passion and he is very colourful in his presentation.” To a question from Najib to the crowd whether the future of the Indian community lay within the BN system or outside, the crowd answered: “Within.”

He said Malaysia could not achieve a developed nation status by 2020 if any particular community was marginalised.

Later, Najib denied allegations that the BN did not take seriously proposals and suggestions submitted by MIC. “I can give you a list of things that we have done for the Indian community. From licences to scholarships to funds for Tamil schools to micro credit for businesses.” Najib said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan had also been asked to increase the intake of Indians and non-Bumiputeras into the civil service.

MIC delegates were subtly threatened and then cajoled to support BN.
