Kayveas has a rocky relationship with fellow BN component party members, including Gerakan, which gave up Taiping in the 2004 general elections.

Gerakan has never lost the Taiping seat since it won the seat in 1969 but had reluctantly allowed PPP to contest there in the last election in what was then dubbed a ‘one-off’ seat arrangement with Umno.

In return, Umno made way for Gerakan’s women’s wing chief Tan Lian Hoe to contest in the Malay-majority Bukit Gantang seat, which neighbours the Taiping seat. Since 2004, Gerakan and PPP have been trading barbs over the Taiping seat, which Kayvaes indicated he has no intention of giving up.Meanwhile, BN Perak chairperson Mohd Tajol Rosli had previously promised that the party would get back its Bukit Gantang seat.

Tan to fight Lenggong

In today’s announcement of the BN line-up in Perak, Tajol Rosli said that Umno will contest Bukit Gantang in the March 8 general elections but will give its Lenggong parliament seat to Tan. “Because we have been forced to give way to Tan to contest in Lenggong, the Umno Lenggong Youth chief (Shamsul Anuar Nasarah) will now be fighting the parliament seat of Gerik while incumbent Wan Hashim Wan Teh will not be contesting,” said Tajol Rosli. Tajor Rosli then announced Umno line-up in Perak where the party will be contesting 11 parliament seats and 34 state seats.Perak has 24 parliament seats and 69 state seats.

[note: latest update is that the Gerakan candidate is moving to Johor, while UMNO regains Lenggong, but not sure who loses a seat]

Folk in Taiping now like me, claims Kayveas

source

IPOH: PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas says he will have no problem defending his Taiping seat, claiming he has almost 70,000 supporters there. He said that it was not true that the people did not want him in the constituency.”My voters have grown to like me,” he said, adding that he had also fallen in love with the place.”In fact, I have been sending birthday cards to every voter since I was elected. I have a team of people that look into sending 180 to 200 such cards daily,” he said.

Kayveas added that he “sympathised” with Gerakan as it was clear that they “did not know what they wanted.””That is the difference. Gerakan did not care which seat they get, as long as they get one,” he said, adding that he had done more work in Taiping than Gerakan had ever done in the 30 years they had held the seat.

On the protest of PPP members in Taiping recently, seeking Bukit Gantang incumbent MP Datuk Tan Lian Hoe to contest the Taiping seat, Kayveas said, “Those are not my members. We have proof of that.”

On the possibility of DAP Youth chief Nga Kor Ming contesting in Taiping, Kayveas said, “In the last elections, the DAP candidate Ong Chee Keng fought against me but later left the DAP to join PPP.

“Ong will be by my side during campaigning this time around.”

After a rather long saga, PPP has been confirmed of retaining Taiping seat, much to the chagrin of UMNO loyalists.
