\nKUALA LUMPUR, sun:<\/p>\nHousewife R. Selemah, 37, a resident of the Batu Caves state constituency in Selangor, has made up her mind whom to vote for on polling day on Saturday – Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate T. Mohan of the MIC. “Mine has been a difficult life. No one had come forward to offer any help except the BN candidate. He called at my house last week and pledged to help me. My vote is for him,” she said.<\/p>\n
Her words must definitely come as sweet news for Mohan, 35, who had opted for the door-to-door campaign in the constituency to reach out to the 25,345 voters, 62.4 per cent of whom are Malays, 21.4 per cent Indians, 15 per cent Chinese and 1.1 per cent others.<\/p>\n
“This strategy (of door-to-door campaigning) enables us to have a heart-to-heart talk with the constituents and maintain or restore their confidence in the BN,” said the affable Mohan.<\/p>\n
The managing director of the P.E.S. Group of Companies is facing Amirudin Shari of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and independent candidate Azmi Hussain in the tussle for the seat, last held by V. Jagarasah of the BN.
\nAfter a week of campaigning, the Puchong MIC Youth chief has begun to see the support for him growing among the voters. “The support, particularly from the Malay and Indian voters, has been growing,” he told Bernama, adding that the voters, especially the Indian voters, were getting to know him better.<\/p>\n
Mohan said the door-to-door campaign was also helping him to garner the support of people who had at one time supported opposition parties. “This method of campaigning enables me to meet the opposition supporters as well and explain the issues to them,” he said, adding that there was an instance when several opposition party supporters hugged him when he approached them.<\/p>\n
The constituents raised their woes with Mohan and he promised to look into their problems, such as certificate of fitness (CF) for their flats, improper refuse disposal, lack of street lighting, clogged drains and absence of a playground.<\/p>\n
Mohan has also promised to raise with the developer of Pangsapuri Cempaka, Taman Gombak Permai, the matter of leaking pipes which the occupants had complained about. “Last week, I received a complaint about the absence of street lights in the Laksamana Putra area, and I was able to resolve that problem immediately. After that, I saw more BN flags in that area,” he said.<\/p>\n
Mohan’s knack for solving problems comes with his seven years of experience dealing with and solving the problems of people in need, starting with Puchong where he hails from and eventually in the rest of the country in his current capacity as chairman of the Social & Welfare Bureau of the National MIC Youth.\u00a0 He has raised more than RM1 million to enable people, particularly children, suffering from chronic diseases to undergo medical treatment locally and abroad, the donations coming from political leaders, business people, trusted friends, family members and, of course, his own pocket.
