Through sheer hard work and determination, which every one of us is capable of, we can succeed. &#8211; The Star<!--more--><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This country allowed a true entrepreneur to have a dream and go out and realise it,&#8221; he said, recalling how he and his partners bought the bankrupt airline from DRB-Hicom for RM1, assuming debts of RM20 million.\u00a0 They <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">mortgaged their houses to start the airline.<\/span> &#8211; NST<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Asked to impart advice for Indian Malaysian, Fernandes said there was no specific advice for any one race as Malaysians were equally gifted and capable of being successful. &#8211; The Star<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Fernandes, when asked about Malaysian Indians who felt they could not succeed locally, said: &#8220;I like to be known as a Malaysian. I always say don&#8217;t <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">start negatively &#8212; like since I&#8217;m an Indian, I&#8217;m two steps behind<\/span>. Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies.&#8221; &#8211; NST<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Fernandes said changes in the country could come from within the BN government and did not necessarily require the push of the opposition. <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">&#8220;We can make changes from within the system.&#8221;<\/span> &#8211; NST<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0He said his dream was to <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">see the Barisan Nasional become a party for all Malaysians and not a coalition of component parties<\/span>. &#8211; The Star<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fernandes: Shahrizat is hardworking and very committed<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/story.asp?file=\/2008\/3\/7\/nation\/20568907&amp;sec=nation\">source<\/a><\/p>\n<p>BY FARIDAH BEGUM<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes yesterday gave support to Barisan Nasional&#8217;s Lembah Pantai parliamentary candidate Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil, saying she was hardworking and committed to her constituency. &#8220;I have really never seen anyone who works so hard, like her,&#8221; he said speaking at the Barisan&#8217;s Speakers&#8217; Corner in Bangsar Baru.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandes said Shahrizat was the first minister to launch the flight piloted by the company&#8217;s first female pilot and was also instrumental in ensuring that cabin crew retired at the same age, irrespective of gender.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was easy for people to criticise the Government and say they were not given equal opportunities.\u00a0 &#8220;Let me tell you that I am living proof of someone who had no political backing. But that&#8217;s exactly what happened yesterday at Malaysia&#8217;s most happening election operations room &#8212; that of candidate for the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandes, in his trademark red AirAsia cap, spoke to a capacity crowd, telling them that he was proud to be Malaysian and proud that as someone who only had a dream and not much money, he and his partners could build up Asia&#8217;s most successful low-cost airline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This country allowed a true entrepreneur to have a dream and go out and realise it,&#8221; he said, recalling how he and his partners bought the bankrupt airline from DRB-Hicom for RM1, assuming debts of RM20 million.\u00a0 They mortgaged their houses to start the airline.<\/p>\n<p>In its first year, AirAsia carried 200,000 passengers.
