Mr Arumugam won N25 Bukit Selambau beating MIC&#8217;s Krishnan.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: Independent candidate Arumugam has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thestar.com.my\/election\/story.asp?file=\/2008\/3\/10\/election2008\/20080310164002&amp;sec=election2008\">decided to join PKR<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Indian indie candidate to join PKR<\/p>\n<p>By R. SURENDRAN<\/p>\n<p>SUNGAI PETANI: Independent candidate V. Arumugam, 54, who won the Bukit Selambau state seat, said he will be joining the PKR &#8220;to serve the constituents better.&#8221; He is expected to be appointed an executive councillor as he is the only Indian candidate to win in Kedah.<\/p>\n<p>The seat was initially supposed to be a three-cornered fight among Barisan Nasional, PKR and Arumugam, but PKR candidate Saiful Izham Ramli had his nomination papers rejected for failing to submit his statement of accounts. Arumugam obtained 13,225 votes while S. Krishnan from the MIC managed to secure 10,863 votes.<\/p>\n<p>The last candidate who won on an independent ticket in peninsular Malaysia was the late Choy Chooi Yew, popularly known as C.Y. Choy, for Pengkalan Kota state seat in Penang in 1974. Choy served six years before he died in 1980 at the age of 73.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kedah&#8217;s new government will be offering Arumugam a place in the EXCO as <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">representative of the Indian community<\/span>. He is still undecided on joining PKR. According to the Star (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/story.asp?file=\/2008\/3\/10\/nation\/20596745&amp;sec=nation\">source<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>SUNGAI PETANI: Independent candidate V. Arumugam, who won the Bukit Selambau state seat, will join PKR if the newly formed Kedah government agrees to appoint him a state executive councillor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will do that in the interest of the Indian community and the people who voted for me.\u00a0&#8220;I have been approached by PKR but I have to wait for further developments,&#8221; he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Arumugam, 54, who left his job as trainer at the aircraft engineering section of the RMAF in Alor Star to contest the seat, defeated MIC&#8217;s S. Krishnan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>PKR&#8217;s Johari Abdul, who won the Sungai Petani parliamentary seat, said he welcomed Arumugam to join the PKR.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>List of Kedah ADUN<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N25 (Bukit Selambau\/Indp) Arumugam<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Penang<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Penang had <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">8 candidates contesting 5 seats<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>MIC &#8211; 2 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>DAP &#8211; 4 (4 won &#8211; 100%)<\/p>\n<p>PKR &#8211; 1 (1 won &#8211; 100%)<\/p>\n<p>Independent &#8211; 1 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>(5\/5 seats won &#8211; 100%)<\/p>\n<p>N9 Bagan Dalam saw a straight fight between two Indian candidates, while N16 Perai saw a 3-cornered fight. In\u00a0 both cases, DAP candidates won.<\/p>\n<p>MIC old face Subbaiyah and newbie Krishan lost. Penang sees the entry of Karpal Singh&#8217;s son Jagdeep Singh, Prof Ramasamy and RSN Rayer.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Penang is won by opposition, so there will be Indian representatives in the state government<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>List of Penang ADUN<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N9 (Bagan Dalam\/DAP) Tanasekharan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N16 (Perai\/DAP) Prof Ramasamy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N29 (Dato Keramat\/DAP) Jagdeep Singh<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N32 (Seri Delima\/DAP) RSN Rayer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N35 (Batu Uban\/PKR) Raveenthran<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Perak<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perak had 14 candidates contesting 11 seats:<\/p>\n<p>MIC &#8211; 4 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>DAP &#8211; 4 (4 won &#8211; 100%)<\/p>\n<p>PKR &#8211; 4 (1 won &#8211; 25%)<\/p>\n<p>Independents &#8211; 2 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>(5\/11 seats won = 45.5%)<\/p>\n<p>N54 Hutan Melintang and N57 Sungkai saw straight fight between Indian candidates, both which were won by PKR and DAP respectively. N24 Hulu Kinta saw PKR candidate against an independent Indian candidate, but both lost to the Malay BN candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Veerasingam (ex-Deputy Minister), Dr Vasan (new), Thangasvari (new) and Ramasamy (new) are the MIC candidates who lost.<\/p>\n<p>Again, even though all the MIC candidates lost, the opposition took over the state, thus <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">there will be Indian representative in EXCO<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>List of Perak ADUN<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><strike>N24 (Hulu Kinta\/PKR) Ayyathurai <\/strike>(mistake)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N30 (Buntong\/DAP) Sivasubramaniam<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N33 (Tronoh\/DAP) Sivakumar<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N40 (Malim Nawar\/DAP) Keshvinder Singh<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N54 (Hutan Melintang\/PKR) Kesavan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N57 (Sungkai\/DAP) Sivanesan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Selangor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>8 seats were contested by 10 candidates:<\/p>\n<p>MIC &#8211; 3 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>DAP &#8211; 3 (1 won &#8211; 33%)<\/p>\n<p>PKR &#8211; 3 (2 won &#8211; 67%)<\/p>\n<p>Independent &#8211; 0 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>(3\/8 seats won = 37.5%)<\/p>\n<p>N10 Bukit Melawati and N49 Seri Andalas saw straight fight between MIC and PKR. In both cases, PKR won. New face T Mohan lost in N16 Batu Caves, while old faces Kamalam and Parthiban lost in N10 and N49 to PKR. N24 Semenyih saw Arutchelvan of Parti Sosialis Malaysia standing under PKR, who also lost. N48 saw HINDRAF ISA detainee Manoharan beating Gerakan candidate by 7000++ majority.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Since Selangor won by new government, there are plenty of Indians to be selected into EXCO<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>List of Selangor ADUN<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N10 (Bukit Melawati\/PKR) Muthiah<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N48 (Kota Alam Shah\/DAP) Manoharan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N49 (Seri Andalas\/PKR) Xavier Jayakumar<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pahang<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pahang had 2 candidates fighting over 1 state seat. MIC old face Davendran beat DAP&#8217;s Kamache to retain his seat N35 Sabai.<\/p>\n<p>(1\/1 seats won = 100%)<\/p>\n<p>Since BN won Pahang, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">the Indian representative in the EXCO will exist in the form of MIC&#8217;s Davendran<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>List Of Pahang ADUN<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">N35 (Sabai\/MIC) Davendran<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Negeri Sembilan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NS had 8 candidates contesting 5 seats:<\/p>\n<p>MIC &#8211; 2 (1 won &#8211; 50%)<\/p>\n<p>DAP &#8211; 3 (3 won &#8211; 100%)<\/p>\n<p>PKR &#8211; 2 (1 won &#8211; 50%)<\/p>\n<p>Independent &#8211; 1 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>(5\/5 seats won = 100%)<\/p>\n<p>N7 Jeram Padang saw straight fight between MIC and PKR, and against the tide, MIC&#8217;s Mogan won. N32 Port Dickson saw 3 cornered fight among Indian candidates, won by PKR, causing state MIC chief Rajagopalu to lose.<\/p>\n<p>Since NS still under BN, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Indian representative in EXCO will be N7 Jeram Padang Mogan<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>List of NS ADUN<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N7 (Jeram Padang\/MIC) Mogan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N22 (Rahang\/DAP) Arumugam<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N24 (Senawang\/DAP) Gunasekaren<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N32 Port Dickson\/PKR) Ravy Munusamy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N36 (Repah\/DAP) Veerapan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Malacca<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This state had 2 Indians contesting 2 seats:<\/p>\n<p>MIC &#8211; 1 (1 won &#8211; 100%)<\/p>\n<p>PKR &#8211; 1 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>(1\/2 seats won = 50%)<\/p>\n<p>Malacca retained by BN, so the Indian representative will be N10 Asahan&#8217;s R.Perumal (MIC).<\/p>\n<p>List of NS ADUN<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>N10 (Asahan\/MIC) Perumal<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Johor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>8 seats contested by 8 candidates:<\/p>\n<p>MIC &#8211; 4 (4 won &#8211; 100%)<\/p>\n<p>DAP &#8211; 1 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>PKR &#8211; 3 (0 won &#8211; 0%)<\/p>\n<p>(4\/8 seats won = 50%)<\/p>\n<p>This is the best performance by MIC state-wise, sweeping clean all 4 seats it contested. Old face Asojan is now joined by Munusamy, Murukasvary, and Vidyananthan.<\/p>\n<p>PAS fielded a non-Muslim for the first time in history, and the name that will go down in history is Kumutta Raman who stood under PKR ticket in N40 Tiram.<\/p>\n<p>Again, since Johor won by BN, there will be Indians in the EXCO. Most likely Asojan.<\/p>\n<p>List of Johor ADUN<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">N9 (Gambir\/MIC) &#8211; Asojan<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">N31 (Kahang\/MIC) &#8211; Vidynanthan<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">N33 (Tenggaroh\/MIC) &#8211; Murukasvary<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">N43 (Permas\/MIC) &#8211; Munusamy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>States Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>All states contested will have representative in state government regardless run by BN or BR.<\/li>\n<li>Total of 56 Indians contested 43 seats. 25 seats were won (25\/43 = 58.1%).<\/li>\n<li>MIC won\u00a07 out of 19 seats it contested (36.85)<\/li>\n<li>MIC\u00a0won all\u00a0seats it contested in Malacca, Johor and Pahang.<\/li>\n<li>MIC won a seat in Negeri Sembilan.<\/li>\n<li>MIC lost all seats in Selangor, Perak, Penang and Kedah.<\/li>\n<li>DAP won 12 out of 16 seats (75%).<\/li>\n<li>PKR won\u00a05 out of\u00a015 seats (33%).<\/li>\n<li>Only one of of 6 independents won (16.6%).<\/li>\n<li>3 out of the 19 (15.8%) MIC candidates were female. One won.<\/li>\n<li>1 out of the 16 (6.3%) DAP candidates are female. She did not win.<\/li>\n<li>2 out of the 15 (13.3%) PKR candidates are female. None won.<\/li>\n<li>1 out of the 6 (16.7%) independent candidates is female. She did not win.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, 79 Indian candidates (Prof Ramasamy\/DAP contested two seats) contested 64 seats in Parliament and states.\u00a039 seats were won (61%).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This General election will see a history of sorts in terms on number of Indians in the parliment.
