Mogan, 40. Mogan, the Negri Sembilan MIC secretary, was the only party representative who won a seat in the state when he defeated K. Manoharan of Parti Keadilan Rakyat by polling 4,185 votes against his opponent’s 2,377 votes.

A first-time contender, Mogan won the hearts of voters with his honest and straightforward approach. His close rapport with the grassroots also worked well in his favour.

The former teacher joined the MIC Ladang Saga branch in 1989 before working his way up to the post of state party secretary in 2000. He holds a Bachelor in Education (Hons) degree and became a teacher in 1993. His first posting was Felda Palong 4. Next came Sekolah Menengah Rantau. In the five months before nomination day, he was a special officer with the Education Ministry.
“I am very grateful to the voters for having confidence in me and I assure them that I will not let them down,” said Mogan, who was recently named the state executive councillor for Estate Affairs and Human Resources. He said his position as an exco member was totally unexpected as it would normally go to the state MIC chairman. However, state MIC chairman Datuk T. Rajagopalu lost his Port Dickson seat, leaving Mogan the position.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan wants Mogan to help estate folk lift themselves out of poverty and avoid being exploited.

His other exco tasks include addressing unemployment issues and ensuring estate workers in the state are adequately cared for in terms of medical protection and other benefits.

“This is a huge task, but I am honoured that the menteri besar has given it to me,” said Mogan. “I have begun meeting representatives of estate unions to get an overall picture of the situation. “I will visit as many estates as I can to get a first-hand view of the situation by spending time with the workers. I have to hear it straight from their mouths what their grievances are so that I can address their issues more effectively.”

He has already set up his service centre in his constituency and will personally be there from 2pm to 5pm every Thursday and Friday. “I will try to attend as many functions in my constituency as possible. I want to build a personal relationship with as many people there as possible. The menteri besar has told us to spend as much time as possible in our constituency and this is what I aim to do.”

As an MIC member, he also wants to help Indians in the lower income group in terms of better job opportunities and educational facilities. “I have set myself six months to raise the living standards of as many families as possible in my constituency.”

He said there were also issues over the conditions of street lights, drainage and piping in Jeram Padang which he would have to look into. “Also, many people are very poorly informed about the aid programmes offered by the government; because of this, many hardcore poor families do not actually benefit from these programmes.”

As for his party duties, he said he would do his best to plug all weaknesses in the party and bring the members closer together. “There are issues in the state MIC which need to be ironed out and I will work closely with other leaders and members on this.”

Mogan is married to P. Kaladevi, 38, and has two sons and a daughter. “My wife is a very supportive and capable woman on whom I can always depend. However, I will not neglect my family life and will make sure I spend time with my wife and children.”

meanwhile the losing candidate is also starting his campaign early…

PKR man to continue his work

source

SEREMBAN: Defeated Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate for Jeram Padang K. Manoharan will continue with his work in the constituency.
“You do not have to be a voted representative to help the people. I have the support of my party and will do my part to make the people’s life better.”

Manoharan, who is also the PKR Jempol deputy chief, said he had been confident of winning but various factors had worked against the party. “I still managed to get a good number of votes. Like I said, what is important is that the people’s interests are well represented.

“There is always the next general election and we will continue doing our work as normal and prepare for the next challenge.”

Newly elected assemblymen Mogan is MIC sole representative in Negeri Sembilan.
