IPOH: A tussle over who should be the next secretary of PKR’s Ipoh Barat division turned into a confrontation that found the police stepping in.<\/p>\n
On Sunday night, a committee meeting whose agenda included appointing a new secretary to replace M. S. Arjunan turned into a shouting match between his supporters and several committee members at a hotel here.\u00a0 The argument alarmed the hotel’s security guards who called in the police to check on the situation.<\/p>\n
It took several minutes for party members to calm down the opposing sides before the meeting continued for another two hours behind closed doors.<\/p>\n
Members led by Federal Territory PKR deputy chairman V.M. Gopi also arrived to intervene on Arjunan’s behalf.<\/p>\n
Later, division chairman Fauzi Muda explained that the committee wanted to replace Arjunan after receiving complaints about his performance and behaviour. “He has failed to deliver as a secretary,” said Fauzi, adding that there was no such agreement to retain Arjunan in the post until the next party elections.<\/p>\n
Fauzi said that during the meeting, the committee had voted on a list of nine candidates to be submitted as proposed councillors in the new government. Arjunan’s name was not among them.<\/p>\n
Arjunan, however, denied allegations that he had failed to serve his division and in turn accused the chairman of not co-operating with him. He accused Fauzi of not attending functions he had organised such as Deeparaya and Ponggal festivals.<\/p>\n
Arjunan pointed out that if he were not qualified to be secretary, the party leadership would not have even asked him to contest in the general election. He had contested and lost in the recently concluded general election to Barisan Nasional’s Dr Mah Hang Soon in the Chenderiang state seat, which is within the Tapah parliamentary constituency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
