Mara will give out RM400,000 to RM1 billion in loans this year for SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) high achievers to pursue their studies at universities abroad.
\nIts chairman Brig-Jen (Rtd) Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Zainal Abidin said the bigger amount allocated under the Excellent Student Scheme was in line with Mara’s decision to increase the number of recipients from 1,000 each year to 1,200 from this year.<\/p>\n

“The amount loaned to each student will depend on which country he or she will study in. If it’s in Europe, the cost is definitely higher compared to the Middle East or Asia,” he said after launching the Sarawak-level Mara Education Carnival 2008.<\/p>\n

“Studying medicine for six years in a European country can cost up to RM1 million. “For instance, Mara spends RM1.2 million on a student taking a six-year medical course in Ireland until he qualifies as a doctor,” he said.
