\nSamy Vellu, who called for the release of the five detainees on Sunday, met Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar this afternoon to discuss their release. “We understand that the five were detained to preserve the security of the country but now after more than four months, we hope that the government will reconsider their detention,” said Samy Vellu.<\/p>\n

“The Home Minister said that they will have to seek the police’s view<\/span><\/strong> on this before reconsidering and that he (Syed Hamid) cannot decide unilaterally<\/strong><\/span>.” The 72-year-old said MIC will leave it to the minister to sort it out and take the appropriate action<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Samy Vellu also said that he would not be raising the issue with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi because the matter was under the home minister’s purview<\/span><\/strong> and not the prime minister’s anymore.<\/p>\n

PUTRAJAYA: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu yesterday put forward the party’s appeal to the Home Ministry for the release of the five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) detainees.
\nHe said at the time of the illegal Hindraf rally in November last year, it appeared that the movement was a threat to national security.<\/p>\n

“It is now about four months since their detention and we appeal to the government to consider releasing them<\/span><\/strong>,” he said after a meeting with Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar at the ministry here.<\/p>\n

Samy Vellu said he was informed by the minister that in order to do so, the government needed to get the views of the police<\/span><\/strong>. “I leave it in his hands to take action at the appropriate time<\/span><\/strong>,” he said after the meeting.
\nHe was accompanied by Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramiam, who is also MIC secretary-general, and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department S.K. Devamany.<\/p>\n

Asked if he would appeal to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Samy Vellu said it would not be appropriate to do so as Abdullah was no longer the minister in charge of internal security<\/span><\/strong>. PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar has to seek the views of the police first before he can make a decision<\/strong><\/span> on the request for the release of the five Hindraf leaders detained under the ISA.<\/p>\n

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said he had “requested” Syed Hamid, with whom he had a 40-minute meeting yesterday, to make a decision at an appropriate time<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
