Kohilan Pillay has proposed the creation of an education and welfare fund by major plantation companies for poor families living in plantations. Kohilan said he had informed Plantation Commodities and Industries Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui about the proposal and the latter was receptive to the idea.

The ministry would be discussing the matter with major plantation companies later on the way forward to help needy plantation families, he told Bernama after attending the opening of the two-day International Palm Oil Sustainability Conference here today. Kohilan said such a fund would go a long way to help bright students among the poor or even single mothers living in estates.

Malaysia has several major plantation companies with interests in oil palm and rubber cultivation and some of them have a history of more than 100 years.
The deputy minister said he was also discussing with the Malayan Agricultural Producers Association (Mapa) and the National Union of Plantation Workers (NUPW) the issue of getting better wages for plantation workers. He said that while the NUPW had asked for a minimum wage of RM900 a month, there were others who favoured an incentive-based system.

Kohilan said he had visited several plantations to talk to workers and would be talking to more workers besides discussing the matter further with Mapa and NUPW before a viable mechanism could be effected. “It will take some time but we are discussing the matter actively,” he said.

We already heard MIC ministers speaking about their new jobs (except Devamany who just mentioned a bit during the MIC meeting).
