PSD claims<\/a> cream of the crop were selected for PSD scholarship, but if you read the “Letters” page of the Star recently, it seems to show otherwise. I hope its not a case of shooting oneself in the foot here.<\/p>\n

We can’t hide things in the current age. Today, news spreads in seconds. Lies can be uncovered easily. Two of the letters are available on the Star’s website while the other one is in the print edition only.<\/p>\n

Letter 1 (source<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n

PSD should release details of scholarship recipients<\/strong><\/p>\n

I REFER to “Not for all top students,” (The Star, May 18) quoting the PSD Director-General saying that those who were awarded the PSD scholarship are the “cream of the crop”.<\/p>\n

I am a 11A student and I was the top student of my school. I was denied the PSD scholarship. However, some of my friends who had fewer As were awarded seats for matriculation and PSD scholarships and they do not know which to choose.<\/p>\n

They are my very close friends and they are shy to face me purely because I am the top student and I was not offered anything. They too feel sad for me.<\/p>\n

As such I would like the PSD to be transparent and genuine in making such statements. I am sure many in my shoes would have encountered the same situation.<\/p>\n

I will be satisfied if the PSD releases the names and details of all the recipients of the 2008 PSD scholarships to prove they really belong to the “cream of the crop.”<\/p>\n

I have friends from all walks of life and we grew up together from kindergarten days. However it is sad to note that the so-called “cream of the crop” does not apply to the privileged society!<\/p>\n

That’s the truth; the whole truth and nothing but the truth! So PSD no more wayang kulit please.<\/p>\n

Letter 2: (source<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recognised overseas but not at home<\/strong><\/p>\n

FOR the past few weeks when I was turned down for everything, including a PSD scholarship, I thought my aspiration to go abroad to further my studies was just a dream.<\/p>\n

But luckily, I was awarded an Opportunity Grant by the US Department of State to help pay for my studies in the United States. I received a confirmation e-mail a few days ago saying that my application for the grant had been successful.<\/p>\n

With this offer, it is without a doubt that I am being recognised overseas but not by my own country.<\/p>\n

Before that, I was na\u00efve to believe that excelling in my SPM examinations and extracurricular activities would help me secure a PSD scholarship to study abroad.<\/p>\n

Our national leaders often talk about the acute shortage of professionals, but why haven’t they done something for us? If the problem continues to occur our country will continue to lose its competitive edge globally.<\/p>\n
