Following the furore over Perak Sungai Rapat assemblyperson Hamidah Osman’s racial insult<\/a> in the state assembly, the state UMNO and BN had publicly apologized<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a statement, state Umno secretary Datuk Ramly Zahari said the
\nremarks of Hamidah, who is also Gopeng Wanita Umno chief, were
\nregrettable.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs such, Umno and Barisan apologises to
\nthose, especially the Indian community, who felt slighted or
\noffended,\u201d he said yesterday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough she has retracted her words at the state assembly,
\nit is felt that we should still extend our apologies in order to
\nmaintain the good relationship among the races,\u201d said Ramly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope it will be accepted with an open heart by everyone,\u201d Ramly added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In a statement faxed to the New Straits Times office here yesterday
\nevening, Perak Umno liaison secretary Datuk Ramly Zahari said he was
\ninstructed by state liaison chairman Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali to
\nissue a statement on the matter.<\/p>\n

He said Tajol Rosli wanted the
\nmatter dealt with quickly for fear it would affect race relations since
\nthe issue had drawn flak from the public.<\/p>\n

Ramly said Perak Umno
\nand the state Barisan Nasional regretted “the slip of tongue” by Sungai
\nRapat assemblyman Hamidah Osman and “apologised to all quarters who are
\nunhappy with the remark, especially the Indian community”.<\/p>\n

“Hamidah had retracted her statement in the state assembly. \n<\/p>\n


\n<\/p>\n

<\/center> “Nevertheless, to maintain a good relationship among the
\nraces, we hope this statement of regret and apology will be accepted
\nwith an open heart by all parties,” he said.<\/p>\n

Ramly admitted that Hamidah had uttered a remark which insulted the
\nIndian community, but maintained it was merely a slip of the tongue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Her statements caused much anger in the community, with many police reports being made and at least two protests being held. <\/p>\n

MIC’s Samy Vellu also expressed unhappiness over her statements.<\/p>\n
