CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL in solidarity with Revathi
Date    : Tuesday, 19th. June 2007
Time    : 8:00pm onwards
Venue   : Dataran Merdeka (under the flag)

As a Malaysian citizen who loves religious freedom in
this country are encouraged to participate in this
Candle Light Vigil. We are not asked to pay any money
for this vigil, just spend few hours or minutes to
show our support, and by this we show our unhappiness
to the government the way they push us to the corner
with the name or religion.
No matter what religion you belong to, if you are not
happy with the way the government is moving with the
name of religion, than you should joint with MCCBCHST
for the vigil.
But if you think you are happy with the way the
government is moving with the name of religion, than
just stay at home.
Think carefully\u00c2\u2026don\u00c2\u2019t wait until it happens to us.

Background about Revathi\u00c2\u2026

Revathi was born to parents who had converted to Islam
before her birth. She went to the Syariah Court for an
order permitting her to leave Islam. Revathi says she
is a Hindu. She married her Hindu husband, Suresh,
under Hindu rites. They have one daughter, now aged
about 15 months. Revathi\u00c2\u2019s marriage cannot be
registered, and the child\u00c2\u2019s birth also remains
unregistered, because the State refuses to sanction
their union.

Revathi went to the Melaka Syariah High Court in its
civil jurisdiction for an order allowing her to leave
Islam. The Islamic court sent her to a detention camp
in a different State for \u00c2\u201crehabilitation\u00c2\u201d for 100
days. That detention period has now been extended by
another 80 days in her absence. Her Hindu husband is
allowed very limited access to her. In the meanwhile,
her Muslim mother obtained a Syariah Court order
granting her custody of the 15 month old baby and
together with the police enforced that order on
Suresh’s Hindu family. The baby is now with the
grandmother, the mother is in detention and the father
is heartbroken.
