Arumugam as not a scandal but a misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said the problems were linked to the legal status of Arumugam\u2019s \u201csecond wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>A non-Muslim man cannot have more than one wife under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 unless he divorces his first wife.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cArumugam married his second wife <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>some eight or nine years ago by religious rites<\/strong><\/span>,\u201d said Johari.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said Arumugam had not registered the customary marriage because he was <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">still legally married to his first wife of 19 years<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asked whether Arumugam\u2019s resignation was related to a memorandum that had been submitted to the Kedah Sultan alleging he had insulted the palace by bringing his \u201csecond wife\u201d to official functions, Johari, who is also MP for Sungei Petani said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTo me, this is all just a misunderstanding that has been triggered by certain parties to create uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cArumugam married his second wife some eight or nine years ago, but this is being raised now. Clearly, this seems to be a ploy to bring him down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Alor Setar, state government sources said that the memorandum was submitted to the Sultan on Tuesday by several residents of Sungai Petani.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They said Arumugam had breached Section 7 (1) of the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 by taking a second wife without divorcing his first.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They also questioned the woman\u2019s legal status to marry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have photographs to prove that they married according to religious rites,\u201d said the sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Attempts to contact Arumugam have been unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What does Hinduism say on taking a second wife?
