Since Jodie Foster acted in it, the expectation is higher. The movie started off like a happy movie; couple in love (Naveen Andrews – Lost Series-as handsome as ever); good job (she an audio presenter, he a doctor); wedding plans in motion; life is a bliss. Until, as Then pointed out, the dog came into the picture. Well, you have to see the movie for more on that. Suffice to say that the doctor ends up dead and our heroine ends up comatose for 3 weeks.

From this point onwards, we see the entry of the police (Terrence Howard), and the transformation of Jodie from someone who is so full of life, looking at positive side of things, into someone who is scared, beaten, and ultimately vengeful. All this while she potrayed New York as a safe and happy place, but after the violent attack, she only sees darkness, fear and insecurity.

The movie touches on the insecurities that people have and the illusion of safety which is created as long as anything bad happens to other people, not to one’s own self.

The second part of the movie shows Jodie purchasing a gun, and begin her journey towards vigilantism. The scenes after she did her first killing was well taken. She questions herself on not feeling anything after taking away a life. She feels numb and detached. She goes on killing a few more baddies, before the police finally get some clue on the vigilante.

She manages to get to the baddies who attacked her and her fiance, killing them all in the end, and got her German Shepherd back. The end has a slight twist, which I’m sure will leave Jodie’s fans happy.

Acting wise, superb performance from Jodie – a transformation from a sweet, happy go lucky person into a cold-hearted murderer, a monster. The inner conflict she faces is well captured. The other actors also played their roles well. Terrence with his funny smile, disguising his police brain, also had good chemistry with Jodie.

Cinematography played an important role here, transforming New York from colorful to grey and darkness as the story progresses, mimicking the changes in Foster

Overall, a good movie, maybe Oscar nomination for Foster. The talking point of the movie is the brutal attack which was well highlighted in the media.

Cast: Jodie Foster, Terrence Howard, Naveen Andrews
Genre: Action, Drama (not suitable for children)
Acting : 8/10
Story : 8/10
Special Effects: 6/10
Cinematography: 8/10
Overall Oomphness: 8/10

Saw this movie at Kuantan Megamall.
