Well executed, continuous flow, non-stop intriguing moments, and a nice tidy clean-up in the end. Well done!

The movie continues from the second movie, in which Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), the rogue CIA agent, looses his girlfriend. The story starts a bit slowly, in Moscow, with Bourne on the run from local cops. After that, things heat up and you get to see the customary chase across Europe and the Atlantic, where things finally end at good old USA.

Bourne is determined to get to the bottom of his identity and punish those who made him who he is now. He gets in touch with a journalist investigating Bourne, but before he can get more details, the journalist gets assassinated. However, Bourne retrieves some documents from the dead journalist’s bag. This happens at the famous Waterloo Station in London. The scene where Bourne guides the journalist was well-taken. Did I say slick earlier?

The assassination is ordered by CIA who using a technology called ECHELON (which is supposed to be a fictional capability of the US government to track and listen to phone class all over the world!) realized that the journalist is getting information from a CIA insider. The CIA unit boss, Noah Vosen (David Strathairn) who in charge of bring down Bourne, is also the officer in charge of Project BlackBriar, the upgrade to Project Threadstone. After the botched assassination, Pamela Landy (Joan Allen), another CIA official, is called up to assist in apprehending Bourne. She was the one who made contact with Bourne and realized that he may not be a rogue agent after all in the second movie.

The chase moves to Tangiers, Morocco as Bourne tries to get in touch with the journalist’s informer. He meets Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles), who now works as a CIA liason officer (She was introduced in the first movie). She acted for about 20 minutes only in this movie. Parsons helps Bourne to track the informer, but again Vosen orders the informer to be assassinated before Bourne is able to talk to him. A motorbike and rooftop chase occurs as the assassin goes after Bourne and Parsons. Bourne kills the assassin. Both of them part ways soon after that. Pamela quits the operation team because she is against the way Vosen orders assassinations of fellow agents and public. She tries to warn the CIA head, but to no avail.

Bourne manages to get some clue from the remains of the informer’s body at the morgue. Thus he makes his way to New York, to the CIA office. Over there, he observes Pamela and Vosen at work from a building across their office. He communicates with Pamela and asks her to meet him, fully knowing that Vosen and his team will be tracking him. Pamela gives him a cryptic messages telling him where to go, the Threadstone training facility.

He then steals the incriminating documents from Vosen’s office while leading them on a wild goose chase. Bourne learns that Project Threadstone (of which he is the product) has been upgraded to Project BlackBriar, a stealth unit to covertly remove targets that are deemed as threat to the US. Bourne passes the documents to Pamela at the Threadstone training building, who in turn faxes it to an unknown recipient, just as Vosen breaks in. He then meets his recruiter and trainer, Dr.Albert, and finally gets to know his true identity, which is Jack Weber, an army personnel who volunteered for the Threadstone Project. Dr.Albert has been forewarned by Vosen about Bourne, and he stalls him while waiting for Vosen and his team to arrive. Dr. Albert and Bourne talked about the project and Bourne finally stresses that he is quitting the project, when the team attacks. While making his escape, he is seemingly shot by the Vosen and falls in to the ocean. The story the cuts to the future, where an inquiry is being held on CIA’s covert project and news reports indicating that Bourne’s body was never recovered. Well, we all know what that means ?

The story is fast-paced, leaving you no time to take a breather. The fight scenes are really messy and realistic, none of the Matrix-type flying around in the air stuff. You can practically hear every punch and kick being executed.

As I mentioned, the movies cuts across Europe and US, thus you get to see various locations. Only problem is that I wonder why Bourne never gets caught at airports. Surely the CIA has information about his forged identities. And how does he get money to do all those traveling? He still keeping the stash from the first movie?

The script was well-written, giving the characters intelligence and realness. The actors’ portrayed their characters well, though I felt that Damon looked older compared to the other two movies. The stunts were well integrated to the story.

Conclusion: Well-scripted movie. Good ending for the trilogy. Slick, fast-paced action.

Cast: Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, David Strathairn
Genre: Action
Acting : 8/10
Story : 8/10
Special Effects: 7/10
Cinematography: 8/10
Overall Oomphness: 8/10

Slick is how I will summarize Bourne Ultimatum.
