I can’t believe the **** we have to tolerate. A decision like this, deciding that History is to be a compulsory pass subject<\/a><\/strong> for SPM in 2013 is announced (or decided?) at a political party gathering? Where’s the input from the academicians, the public, the teachers?<\/p>\n

I really hope there was some study done on this, and the announcement is just another gaffe by the minister. I don’t think making a subject pass-compulsory will make students actually learn and understand it.<\/p>\n

HISTORY will be made a must-pass subject in the\u00a0Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia<\/em>(SPM) beginning 2013, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.<\/p>\n

Muhyiddin said that beginning 2014, History would be made a core subject in primary schools, too.<\/p>\n

He said putting more emphasis on history would create a deeper appreciation of the concept of \u201cnegara bangsa\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn view of this, the content of the subject would be improved with more emphasis on understanding the Federal Constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeginning 2013, History, like Bahasa Malaysia will be a must-pass subject to obtain the SPM certificate,\u201d the Umno deputy president said in his winding-up speech.<\/p>\n

The call to place more importance on the subject was raised by several delegates including delegates from Perak and Kedah.<\/p>\n

They argued that the younger generation was oblivious to the history of the nation especially the Federal Constitution. The delegates also felt that primary school pupils should be exposed to history in a more comprehensive manner.<\/p>\n

Muhyiddin, who is also the Educa tion Minister, said presently elements of history was included in the \u201cKajian Tempatan\u201d subject which is a combination of history and geography.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder the new\u00a0Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah <\/em>(KSSR), history will be a core subject starting from 2014,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Muhyiddin said the KSSR, which would be introduced next year, emphasised hands-on and project-based learning as well as discovery and enquiry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe objective of KSSR is to produce holistic students who are capable of facing future challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is also in line with the decision to introduce a new assessment system for the\u00a0Ujian Pelajaran Sekolah Rendah <\/em>in 2016,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Muhyiddin also said the new school-based assessment to replace thePenilaian Menengah Rendah <\/em>(PMR) would be introduced in 2014, two years ahead of its initial implementation date.<\/p>\n

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi described the changes to the subject as timely as remarks on racial sensitivities were being made without understanding our real history.<\/p>\n
