IJOK: Entertainment figures have descended here to lend a carnival-like atmosphere in the campaign of the Ijok by-election.
Superstar Mawi made an appearance to the delight of the folks here a few days ago but it was the unexpected “re-appearance” of the legendary Maradur Gopalamenon Ramachandran (MGR) on Thursday night which was talked about.
The real MGR may have died 20 years ago but thanks to local impersonator M.G. Lakshmanan, the former chief minister
who became famous as a movie star, the actor was brought back to life to campaign for Barisan Nasional’s candidate K. Parthiban.
Evening of stars: (From left) Raja Raja Cholan, Samy, M.S. Britto and local MGR impersonator M.G. Lakshmanan belting out a number in Ijok on Thursday night. The “new” MGR went by the name of “Malaysia MGR.”
More than 500 people attended the cultural show organised by the Malaysian Indian Artistes Association at the SK (T) Batang Berjuntai field.
Judging from the response of the crowd, they were thrilled.
When MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and Parthiban arrived at the show, the song Neenga Nall Irukanum, Naadu Munnayrum (You must be in good health and the country will prosper) was played and the people gave a thunderous applause.
Other artistes who performed were local well-known singers Raja Raja Cholan, M.S. Britto, Pa Maheswaran and Jayashree.
Samy Vellu himself belted out two oldies – Aacham Enpathu Madamaiyada (It is stupid to fear challenge) and Aganthamam Un Malaiyum, a love song – getting tremendous applause from his audience.
In his speech, he said Parthiban had good education and was of impeccable character.
A few days ago, the Mawi concert in Bukit Badong drew some 3,000 people.
An Umno state youth leader said: “We just want the folks to lighten up. Mawi is a good choice because he is huge.
“Of course, we don’t expect voters to choose us just because we brought Mawi here but it sure brings in the crowd.”
