SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor has voiced his unhappiness at the actions of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), which he said has incited hatred and damaged the country’s image by taking its campaign overseas.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said he was “upset and angry” that Hindraf had proceeded with its illegal protest in defiance of the police and causing disruption to many in Kuala Lumpur.
He was also unhappy at the action of the Hindraf supporters in carrying banners and pictures of Queen Elizabeth II during the recent protests, which drew thousands of people.
“Why were they displaying her pictures and asking her to intervene in Malaysia? They can always bring their case to the Government and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said in an interview at the Istana Mastika here.
The Tuanku also hit out at Hindraf leaders for claiming that “ethnic cleansing” occurred in Malaysia, saying that it was an outrageous claim, which had damaged Malaysia’s image.
“I am disappointed with what Hindraf has done. I am upset. There are better ways of doing things. To stage a protest and fight with the police, I cannot accept. This is not the way to do things in Malaysia,” he said.
The Sultan, who is celebrating his 62nd birthday on Tuesday, urged his subjects to be rational and moderate, saying that racial tolerance has always been a trademark of Malaysia.
He acknowledged that there were problems affecting Malaysians of all races and not just one particular ethnic group, adding that people must learn from the country’s history.
“Not all Indians are Hindraf supporters. I hope they will speak up against such illegal protests and dissociate themselves from Hindraf,” he said.
The Tuanku also hit out at the organisers of the recent Bersih protest, which drew thousands of demonstrators, saying that he could not accept illegal gatherings and that the law must be respected.
Bersih is a loose coalition of opposition parties including PAS, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat and non-governmental organisations, which has demanded free elections.
The Sultan said Malaysia was not like some countries, where there were no democratic avenues, including elections, and that it was wrong for any Malaysian to emulate the protests there.
On the awards for his birthday, he said that no more than 40 Datukships would be given each year, except during special occasions, adding that “if too many are given out, it would lose its prestige”.
He said the state government would also launch a website on Thursday to enable the public to verify the awards and check on the background of Selangor Datuks.
The Sultan said he believed that the titles from the state were valuable and he did not want anyone to claim that their Datukships were from Selangor if they were not.
“The names would be listed in stages. We will start off with recipients between 2000 and 2007 and then we will work on those between 1999 and 1960,” he said, adding that it would take time but he was determined to implement it.
Pls. suggest HINDRAF the way to follow .
Send a memo to Goverment and wait for another 50 years for the reply..Wait in front of Sultan Selangor
istana to pass the memo. How can you all act like nothing is happen. MEMO of the temple demolished has been pass to PM , Sultan Selangor and also to Menteri Besar Selangor seeking for their kind attn. but no action taken in this matter and also looked like no one border about this but now telling lies.
Only GOD knows…
How was paid to the Sultan to speak against the HINDRAF. If they have brought this to the Government what wou;ld have happened. Would they have dealed it ratrionally or just close an eye and speak what is need to be spoken.
I really don’t understand what is happening. I am not saying the muslim subjects are bad….it is the upper cronies who doing as lot of havoc to disryupt the peace of the country and its ppl.
About the Datoship….many of the bought their datoship title and what is the Sultan talking about.
Most of the are not eve3n qualified but yet they are strutting around with a Datoship title. Shame!
I love Malaysia and don want nothing to happen to her because some evil ppl
The monarchies (sultans/rajas) in a democracy are just symbols and they do not have any executive powers. As such they just know what is good for them and their heirs. Their lot is to fawn understanding of the principles of the democratic system of the country and sign whatever is placed before them.
From time to time some of them might try to ruffle the feathers of the elected ruling elite of the country by trying to be a bit bossy but that is as far as it goes. They know the executive can arouse the wrath of the masses against the monarchies with political rhetoric which could become the death knell of the monarchies. Nobody would want to wreck the good things in life given on a silver/golden platter.
So, whatever the rulers said about the Hindraf and Bersih was ‘official speak’. Just to give the executive the feel good factor. No offence meant where the rakyat are concerned.
Giving datoship and other miscellaneous state titles are the ruler’s prerogative. Apart from recognizing deserving citizens who had contributed to the welfare of the state, it is also another wealth generating exercise. Everything nowadays comes with a price. What if some got the awards through devious means?
The awards at federal level is a different ball game altogether. There very few deserving citizens are recognized for their services. Any clown who is in the good books of the Barisan National is awarded. The awards are mainly for toeing the BN’s dictates and in many cases being the running dogs and ‘yesmen’.
No Opposition party leaders are recognized at state and federal levels. Many of these dedicated and capable leaders who had given their time and money (unlike the BN clowns) are not given due recognition. Anyway most of the Opposition leaders know the worth of such awards and do not become the slaves of the system to get one of those awards.
I have come across uneducated fishmongers, gardeners, railway gate-keepers and thugs who were awared the datoships and these riffraff had almost always reminded people to address them as such!
Malaysia must be the only country in the world where thousands of awards are given out every year by the government (Yang Dipertuan Agone), the sultans as well as the governors.
In time to come every other person you meet might be a datuk!
