Should Science and Maths be taught in Tamil or English?
A. Tamil
B. English.
Some additional info::
1. The time allocated for Science and Maths is about 90 minutes per week, according to a concerned parent. Thus teaching these subjects in English does not in any way harm the teaching of Tamil. The results of Tamil UPSR exam has not been adversely affected.
2. Chinese schools have a education pathway all the way to degree (Hong Kong, Taiwan, China), thus they can afford to study in Chinese. Whereas for Indians, we only have tamil education up to primary level.
3. A teacher who marks exam paper says that for Maths, most of the answers are involving numbers. Answering Maths paper with one or two English words means the students is deemed to have “Answered in English”. So, he says the statistics shown on UPSR results does not necessarily reflect the actual situation.
4. There are worries by some quarters that by relinquishing Science and Maths in Tamil, more non-Tamil teachers will be drafted into Tamil schools, and slowly the schools will be “converted”. Thus, its better to use Tamil instead of English.
5. More educational materials are available in English, so it will be helpful for teachers, parents, and students if English is used.
The way tamil press present this issues looks very scary…..any prominent figure who supports english will get nice thrashing from them
Our dear friends re su muthiah president of malaysian dravida kazhagam,T ponniah of tamil bell club, mu vi mathialagan of IPF, Prof ramamsamy of DAP are some of the personality aggressively opposing maths and science in english.
I dont think so the first 3 are acedemicians, the last one is an academician….but what other indian professors,educators,lectures and those indians who run educational institute like colleges and tuition centres doing??……they seem to be very silent.
This is the issue that require their views…..but they seems to be reluctant.
Tamil press is publishing views from IPF,PPP and MIC branch,division and state leaders (some of them are tamil school PTA chairmans as well)….but.for me their views doesnt carry any weight in this issue.
The right people out there need to break their silence and express their views.
Learning Maths and science in english is better than study in Tamil or bahasa language.
Study in english, we have many reference/practice book, our pupil can do more practices.
Other than this, ease them when they go to university which is more books in english. Instead the student busy translating from Bahasa (in secondary), the valuable time can be used for actual practices.
In a way it also increase students self confident.
