This is the first part of a 29-part series on the recent trip to India. One part for each day, plus a summary at the end (when i finally get to that point! 🙂 ). Anyways, some of the postings will have photos and/or videos while others just text.  I need to clarify some things as well:

1. The comments/observations/views are based on Then’s and my own understanding, plus from talking to people like the tourist guides, tour driver, and few people on the streets. Its not meant to represent any particular groups/thinking either in Malaysia or India.

2. The bulk of tour related information stated in the series of postings will most likely change due to infrastructure development, currency exchange rates, new rules and regulations in India, and many other foreseeable and unforeseeable factors.

3. The photos and videos are taken with permission (most of the temples require payment to bring camera/video – all receipts are being kept for record purposes) unless stated otherwise.

Ok…here we go:

The following are events that took place on 4th July 2009.

After nearly three months of planning, we finally arrived at the day where we leave for Chennai on our pilgrimage-cum-vacation trip. Its been few years since we left for overseas trip, so the excitement and trepidation was obvious. Since April, we were busy surfing the Internet on temples and interesting places, charting routes on Google Earth, estimating the budget, flight ticket comparison, surveying tour companies and packing stuff. Even though the planning could have been better, it did help a lot in making the trip a reality.

We took MAS from KLIA to Chennai. on Saturday night,4th July. Met Samy Vellu at the waiting area just before boarding the plane. Plane took off about 9.30pm local time and arrived in Chennai 3 hours and 10 minutes later. Rajini’s Kuselan movie was shown on board. It was quiet trip, but marred by the less than ordinary service by the flight attendants. They forgot to serve our dinner! We had to wait a good 10 minutes after everyone else on the flight got their meals.  There was a bit of turbulence towards the end, but nothing worrying.

Chennai Airport was a bit old, unlike KL. Then said she there’s was a kind of smell at certain places in the airport. There were checks for the AH1N1 flu as we exited.. It was a bit strange seeing Tamil language everywhere, plus whole lot of Indians, Tamils especially. The immigration guy asked if I’m coming for business, whether have friends here or not etc., before allowing me to pass. We waited few minutes to collect the luggage and made our way to the exit.

There was a big crowd waiting, numbering more than 150 people, eagerly looking out for their family members, friends, or customers. Managed to find our agent, Kumaravel easily, as he was holding out my name in BOLD! The was a slight drizzle in Chennai despite the summer heat during the day,  and we just walked to the car. It was an Ambassador, 2003 or 2005 version.

It took a 20 minutes drive to our accommodation for the night. It was a house converted into a guest house called Padmaja Nilayam, located in Arumbakkam. Checked in, arranged things and then took a nap. As advised by our guide-cum-driver, we decided to start the tour at 7.30am the next day.

No photos today as it was near midnight and quite tiring. Next posting will be on Day 2.

After an agonizing month without Internet access (well I did manage to squeeze some time to check mails and blog twice in the last 28 days), I’m back online. There’s 4000++ mails to be cleared and 40 over comments to moderate in the blog…hope can settle it tomorrow. Apologies to those who inquired about education issues – I’ll try to answer all of them by end of weekend.

Well, what’s been brewing in July? I heard about the death of Teoh who was being questioned by MACC Selangor, death of Yasmin Ahmad, the MAIKA issue, 5 deaths due to AH1N1, announcement of Amanah Saham 1Malaysia, still unresolved saga of Kg Buah Pala, Kuhan death case, Rm15 million allocation for Indian youths etc.

Looks like its going to be a hectic August…

IDD activated after 8 working days by TM

After the initial reply from TM (received on Sunday evening), on their failure, I replied to them via email. I also made THREE more calls – on Monday, Tuesday, and today. Monday’s call got a response that my application has been processed and will be activated, but the staff could not guarantee that it will be done on Monday itself. On Tuesday, same thing. Finally, today (24th) I called to inquire and the staff confirmed IDD has been activated. I successfully faxed some documents.

My letters to newspapers: came out in Malaysiakini. Not sure about the other two.

So, after a grand total of 12 days (8 working days), TM managed to activate IDD service. Bravo!

And this company is the one going to provide broadband speed of up tp 2Mbps in rural areas and 10Mbps in prime areas by 201o for a cost of RM 11-15b (If I’m not mistaken).  For comparison, both US and Australia are also drawing their respective National Broadband plans with targets of (hold your breath):

Median US broadband speeds are less than 5.0 megabits per second (Mbps)–capable of moving five million bits of data per second–according to the ITIF, far slower than those of Japan (63 Mbps) and South Korea (49 Mbps).

The FCC presently defines broadband as 786 Kbps–too slow for efficient video streaming, for example–and the ITIF and other groups are seeking target speeds of between 10 and 50 Mbps.

Australia earlier this week announced plans to build a $30bn government-controlled national broadband network offering speeds of up to 100 Mbps to 90 percent of homes and businesses and 12 Mbps to the rest. [I suppose 12 Mbps is for the outbacks]

Oh ya, I got another email response two days after replying to their initial email:

Let me present the facts:

1. I registered a fixed line last year September.

2. A week ago, I tried making calls overseas – but the ring tone was different. Upon inquiring with TM Customer Service (by dialing 100), I was informed that my fixed line’s IDD service is not activated. I asked the customer care staff on the activation process and she duly informed me that its free and I can apply for activate via phone itself, without making a trip to TM Point. She then, put in a “service”request on my behalf and told me that it will be processed in THREE working days. I made the call on Saturday evening (13th June 2009). She took down my mobile number for reference.

3.Three working days would mean Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Fine with me. I gave them an extra day and tried again to call/fax overseas on Thursday. It was not working.

4. I called back Customer Service on Thursday evening (18th June 2009). The “service request” is still in the “system”. They will act on it, the staff said. The customer care staff took down my mobile number. Fine, I can still bear with that.

5. Its Friday, and I made a call. It seems there’s some problem with the connection or whatever. She asked me to call on Saturday to ensure the activation is done. Again, my mobile number was requested.

6. Saturday morning arrives. I made a call around 10am. The customer care staff checked the “system” and mentioned that a request was put in on the 17th. I clarified with her that I made a call on last Saturday and the request should have been there on the 13th, not 17th. I also mentioned that the staff asked me to call today (Saturday) to check on the activation. To my amusement (or horror), she said the contractors don’t work on weekends, so earliest possible activation would be next Monday. Well, I kind of expected that. She was at loss on why the IDD service is still not activated. Anyway, I told her that customer care already took down my mobile number 3 times and I have not received any call from TM regarding solution of the problem. I also told her to get someone to call me on Monday morning to clarify this.

My question:
1. Who is going to reimburse me for calling TM Customer Service (2 out 4 calls were from mobile phone)?
2. Who is responsible for my inability to make calls/fax overseas – which may impact critical decision making?
3. Who will solve this problem for me?

Such a simple service is not being acted upon. There’s no point in being polite and customer-friendly, when the work is not done. All style, no substance.

Note: I’ve sent this to Star, NST, Malaysiakini, TM Website (Complaints and Feedback).

Tamil songs I listened to recently

The Tamil movie season picks up again. Though I’ve not been watching Tamil movies at cinemas of late, I’ve been listening to some of the songs aired over radio and Internet.

Some new songs are worth listening. Unfortunately, the much anticipated Kandasamy doesn’t impress me. The songs are irritating at the moment. But I kind of enjoyed “Idhellam Dupe” song. Others like Mambo Mamia, Excuse Mr Kandasamy, Meow Meow, En Peyar Meenakumari, I’ll give it a miss.

Angadi Theru has one song banned in Minnal FM, but the hit song is of course “Avval Appadi Ondrum Alaghellai”.

Kunguma Poovum Manjal Puravum has one superb song – “Chinna Sirisu”.

Much awaited Nandalala movie by director Mishkin has a standard Illayaraja tune – Mella Oornthu Oornthu which brings back memories of the early 90s tunes.

TN-07-AL-4777 starring Pasupathi has one famous song – “Athichudi”. Yup, THAT song.

Another movie in the pipeline is Adhe Neram Adhe Idham. The song I like in that movie is “Mudhal Murai Unnai Paarthe”.

Some older songs worth adding to your playlist (2008/2009 movies) are:

Laadam – “Siru Thodutalile”

Ali Baba – “Hare Sambo”

Aanandha Thaandavam – “Kallil Aadum”

Ayan – I like all the songs in this movie.

Siva Manasula Sakthi – “Oru Kal Oru Kannadi”

What about you guys? What’s the recent playlist like? Tamil songs only please. 🙂 I don’t really listen to other songs.

Next posting will cover few other movies like Thoranai, Sarvam, Pasanga, Yavarum Nalaam, Mutthirai, Modhi Vilayadhu, Newtonin 3am Vidhi, etc.
