Agathiar to use banana leaves for annathanam

The Consumers’ Association of Penang yesterday called on the public to stop using polystyrene containers, especially during Thaipusam, to pack food in view of their health and environmental effects.

CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris said polystyrene containers took about 500 years to decay, and studies had shown that polystyrene leaches styrenes, a cancer causing agent.

“Thaipusam is the largest gathering of Hindus in the country, where 600,000 to 800,000 devotees flock to Batu Caves in Selangor and the Sri Balatandayutabani temple in Penang.

“During the festival, charitable organisations provide anna thaanam (free food), which is mostly served in polystyrene containers.

“The food providers should instead use alternative containers made of cardboard, banana leaf, palm leaves or sugar cane fibre waste.”

Not sure if its due to CAP’s call to avoid styrofoam (polystyrene) containers during Thaipusam, but Sri Agathiar Sanmargam group who has been dishing out annathanam (food) during Thaipusam will be using banana leaves as plates for the first time of their 13 years service to the Thaipusam attendees.

They would also appreciate contributions for the provision of annathanam, so do visit their website for more details: http://www.agathiarsanmarkam.org/

I think its a good move as every year we can see white containers left around everyone. In recent years, the cleaning process has been a bit faster. I noticed that the cleaners tend to clear the garbage and the dustbins more often, especially in the last two years. But it still can be improved.

MHS launches book for temple sermon

The book is to be used as a guideline during Friday sermons. Not forced upon, so temples still have freedom to disregard the book. Its a good step. At least temples have some reference for their sermons. Problem is, not many temples have sermons every week.

Book On Friday Evening Sermons For Temples

By Ravindran Duraisamy

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) — Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) has compiled a book that will serve as a guideline in delivering sermons at temples all over the nation with the emphasis on national unity.

With the title ’52 Velli Sinthanai Manikal’ or ‘Virtuous Thoughts for 52 Fridays’, the book is to be utilised by the temples in delivering sermons suggested every Friday, that is 52 times in 2009.

The book was complied in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s call that all religious institutions play a proactive role in strengthening national unity.

“The prime minister’s proposal that religious leaders help get the message across on unity through the Friday khutbah for Muslims and Sunday sermons for Christians is most appropriate.

“In line with this, temples in the country are encouraged to use this book as a guideline in their sermons every Friday evening,” said Dr Balakrishnan Kandasamy, 50, the head of the religious sermon division for MHS.

The topics for sermons recommended by the book highlights the universal human values advocated by all religions and the ones that were vital for enhancing the spirit of unity and togetherness, he noted.

Former MHS chairman for Pahang Thondarmamani M.Duraisamy, 80, related to Bernama that he had been waiting for a standard guideline like this for all the temples with the adherents listening to the same message.

“I concur with the prime minister’s view that if we love Malaysia, choose peaceful co-existence, want to create a harmonious atmosphere, we must make sure our words and deeds are within the ambit of religious tolerance and the freedom to worship like practiced in Malaysia all this while,” added Thondarmamani.

Among the aspects given prominence by the book is community service, an undertaking considered sacred in Hinduism and must be conducted without any discrimination on race, religion or any prejudice, said Dr Balakrishnan.

The book also narrates the lives of four exemplary Hindu spiritual gurus or ‘Nyanmarkal’ that serve as a good example in forging unity within the society and family.

TEMPLES ARE READY TO USE THE BOOK

MHS Chairman Datuk A.Vaithilingam told Bernama that the book had already been distributed to the temples in all the states and districts with many of the temples committees stating their readiness to deliver sermons based on the books.

“Temples need only consider one topic for each sermon; for example the first topic in the book – How to Greet Others, why it is important to greet someone and return greetings of others.

“Greetings in Hinduism must be returned and commonly done by clasping both hands and bringing them close to the chest,” said Vaithilingam.

A BOOK OF UNIVERSAL VALUES

The chairman of the Sri Maha Kaliamman temple in Mentakab, Pahang, Balakrishnan @ Rajah, 47, noted that it is an important book and anyone should be able to use it due to its simple language and the universal values promoted.

He thanked MHS for combining religious values and unity in the book.

“It is pertinent to relate to the younger generation on why unity between and within the different races is important and only by tolerating and respecting one another can we lead a harmonious existence and confront many of the social woes that we are facing today,” he said.

This book can also be obtained from MHS at No 63, Jalan Yusof Shahbudin 16, Taman Sentosa, 41200 Klang, Selangor. Those keen to get hold of a copy can contact 03-51613363, 012-2347495, 016-4376352 or e-mail to drbala@hindusangam.org.my or alagansiva@yahoo.com.

The book is now published in Tamil and will be available in Malay and English soon.

Pakatan Retak coming soon?

From Pakatan Rakyat to Pakatan Retak. Well, what we can expect from politicians 🙂

Since Khairy Jamaludin trapped Husam Musa (or is it something pre-planned?) over the implementation of Hudud, Pakatan is getting agitated. DAP is very unhappy at PAS and Anwar Ibrahim over their stand on Hudud.

If one remembers correctly, there was no mention of Islamic laws in the agreement made the 3 parties to work together. But now, PAS is backstabbing DAP, while PKR is playing sandiwara with words since the by-election is days away.

Let’s look at extracts from a Malaysiakini report below:

Hadi said that hudud laws were not an issue in this by-election because it had already been gazetted in Terengganu when PAS held power between 1999 to 2004.

It only applies for Muslims while non-Muslims can decide for themselves. Misunderstanding (on this issue) between Pakatan Rakyat (parties) does not arise.

“It is only Umno that is causing problems,” he added.

Lim then replied that DAP respects the opinion of its coalition partners but Pakatan Rakyat cannot make decisions as a federal government unilaterally.

“If any problems occur, we will resolve it through musyawarah, that is through discussions. All three parties must hold discussions and if a consensus is not reached, it must be discussed again.

“This means, should PKR and PAS agree to implement hudud and DAP disagrees then it cannot be implemented. Everything must be discussed until all three parties agree,” he said.

Lim went on along the same vein for about five minutes while Hadi was noticeably uncomfortable forcing Terengganu PAS chief Mustafa Ali intervened.

Mustafa told reporters that hudud was not an issue in the Kuala Terengganu by-election as the results would not have any impact on the state or federal government.

Hmm…the seat got hot for them until squirming nervously?

I always thought that PAS will back-track/backstab/break away from the coalition. Their ideology is being compromised for the sake of winning the general elections, but it cannot be surpressed for long. PKR is depending on Anwar for comments, but no news from Tian Chua and gang. They will most likely support the stronger side, and in this case, PKR-PAS team looks a better prospect than PKR-DAP prospect.

Its very hard to have a balanced partnership in any coalition. Each party would like to think of it as being the backbone of the coalition, and PAS certainly does not want to play 3rd fiddle to Anwar and DAP.

Interestingly, according to Malaysian Insider:

Speaking to The Malaysian Insider earlier, Khairy denied he had backed the implementation of hudud during his debate with Husam.

Khairy, who has in recent weeks been campaigning on a more inclusive agenda in the race for the top job in his party’s Youth wing, was quoted by The Star as saying he supported the implementation of hudud, in what would have certainly damaged his reputation among more moderate Muslims and non-Muslims.

The Star later retracted the report.

So, did he or did he not mention that he will support Hudud law? Suara Keadilan believes he did:

… The issue over hudud – not new – stirred up a storm of reaction after Husam and Khairy both declared at an open debate they would implement the Islamic law if they came to power.

… Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak too tried to limit the damage from Khairy’s comments. The son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had been reported as saying he would implement hudud if he won the Umno Youth chief post. He has since said he was misquoted.

Another article from CKcounterpunch blog says:

Husam’s forthrightness led Associate Prof Mohd Agus – also participating in the forum – to ask Khairy point-blankly if he would push for hudud law if he became Umno Youth chief.

Khairy, the 32-year old son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, said he would.

Many in the audience were taken aback by his answer.

“It contrasted against his earlier remarks about multi-racialism and how important it was for Malaysians to shift to a new paradigm. With Husam, well, PAS and DAP have never been hypocritical about their opposing stands,” said a spectator who declined to be identified.

So, this unclear situation is not good. We may have some negative elements in BN itself who want to implement Hudud.

From Star:

LAND will be allocated for the Sri Sakthi Nageswari Amman temple currently located in Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, Tamil Nesan reported.

Quoting Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk M. Saravanan, the report said City Hall and developer S.P. Setia had each agreed to allocate 0.2ha for the temple.

He was speaking to reporters after discussions with the temple committee, the Malaysia Hindu Sangam and MIC branch leaders at the temple last Thursday.

Lembah Pantai MIC chief R. Narayanan said the temple had been in existence for the past 80 years.

He said that at one time, there were about 700 Indian families living in the area.

He said that although flats had been built in the surrounding areas due to development, devotees continued to flock to the temple.

Temple chairman N. Subramaniam said he hoped the developers would consider an earlier request to allocate the land where the existing temple is situated.

push for Thaipusam holiday in Kedah

If I remember correctly, the previous state government said that it will look into declaring Thaipusam holiday for Kedah since last year’s request was too close to the festival. Alas, those folks lost the elections.

This time around the PAS-led state government has to satisfy the hunger of the Hindu community. Can they push for holiday for Thaipusam? Will it be considered as anti-Islamic to support a holiday for a kafir religion?

Strangely enough, the call to make Thaipusam a holiday comes from the non-PAS EXCO. who says he has discussed with the Menteri Besar:

The Indian community here has asked the state to declare Thaipusam a public holiday in line with most other states which have already done so.

In making the appeal, Kedah state executive councillor V. Arumugam said he would seek an audience with Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah to get his approval for the public holiday.

He said he had earlier discussed the matter with Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak .

Thaipusam falls on Feb 8 this year and is a public holiday in Selangor, Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Johor.

Which brings us to the next question – What about Malacca? Is MIC trying again this year?
