KAMUNTING, jan 21:
The five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders, held under the Internal Security Act at the Kamunting detention camp, are on a week-long hunger strike from today.

P. Uthayakumar, V. Ganabathirau, T. Vasanthakumar, R. Kenghadharan and M. Manoharan have decided to drink only water till next Monday.

Their lawyer, M. Kulasegaran, who is also MP for Ipoh Barat, told this to reporters after meeting the group for more than two hours at the camp here.

He said the detainees were pressing home the point that their continued detention was unlawful and called for their unconditional release.

The five were detained on Dec 13, last year, on the grounds that they were a threat to national security for their part in an illegal rally on Nov 25 when thousands of Indians took to the street in protest against alleged racial discrimination.

Their habeas corpus application, in which they had named the Internal Security Minister and the Kamunting detention camp commandant as respondents, is due to be heard by the Kuala Lumpur High court on Thursday.
