St Andrews to name new faculty after B.C. Sekharsource

KUALA LUMPUR: University of St Andrews, the third oldest university in the world will name its new School of Medicine and Science after the late Tan Sri B.C. Sekhar.
In announcing this yesterday, the Sekhar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Petra Foundation group, has agreed to give RM56 million in scholarships to deserving Malaysian and South Asian students.

“Although the school is only operational in 2010, we hope to get as many applicants for the programme soon. Interested applicants can visit our website,” said St Andrew’s vice-chancellor Dr Brian Lang after the signing ceremony on the unveiling of the School of Medicine and Science at a hotel here, yesterday.

President of Petra Datuk Vinod Sekhar, who is also B.C. Sekhar’s son, said he chose to collaborate with St Andrews because it was a university that would be able to realise his father’s dreams.

The RM284.2 million school situated in Scotland is the first to be named after an Asian figure.
Vinod said the school would give out scholarships to at least seven Malaysian students annually and sponsor 25 students throughout the whole scholarship programme.
