Curious Case of Elizabeth Wong

Nowadays, the proliferation of video-enabled devices brings downfall of many. some people themselves want to record their precious moments, while others let their guards down during the intimate times. end results is that we see videos and photos grabbed from devices like handphones and laptops. From the HK singer to nurse in Penang, this is a global phenomenon.

There are comparisons being made with Ali Rustam and Chua Soi Lek, which I think its inappropriate in some ways (for one, both denied vehemently while Elizabeth did not). However, there’s another angle now – crime on the part of the ex-boyfriend who is suspected of taking the photos. He may be charged with zina or khalwat, and this may cause him to run away (seems he’s in indonesia at the moment).

Our country rules are quite strict, similar to other countries. Possession of nude photos (of even your own self) can be arrested. If caught distributing, lagi teruk. Thus the ex-boyfriend (if he did it) is in deep trouble. So, would he turn up in Malaysia?

From BN point of view, they may or may not be involved. For all we know, some local leader in PJ could have known about the relationship ending and approached the boyfriend, without knowledge of BN top guns. For all we know, it could have been a rival in PKR, or some of the offended contractors in PJ. Regardless of who may be behind the scene, its the owner of the device who captured the images who is most crucial in solving this problem.

From what I understand, there are 2 photos, but there may be more, including a video clip. The forensics will need to do their magic to identify the authenticity of the images. Even though the victim said she is the one in the pictures, it may be due to her clouded mind or clever superimposing techniques. So, while the chase is on to catch the criminal, the authenticity of the images must be done. I have not seen anyone claiming to do that yet. Just admission by the victim is not enough.

The bigger issue here is the possible existence of a relationship (that is more than just holding hands) between two individuals without a legal endorsement (marriage). Its prohibited in almost all religions. Thus, the YB must ask herself from the religion point of view. I think she’s a Christian (can anyone clarify?), so have to check with her church.

Second is the issue of conduct. Being a person holding public office, she has to be on guard  all the time. According to police, the images were from late last year, so its possible that it was after some festival or party (We had Deepavali, Hari Raya, X’mas, and New Year) when the couple was at home and at ease. She could have been under influence of alcohol (not crime) or other substance (a crime if taken knowingly), thus not in control of her mental faculties. Legally, looks like she did not commit any crime, but the perpetrator did by taking and distributing the photos. Was she aware of her partner taking the photos/videos? A crucial question.

I think most Malaysians, except Khir Toyo (read here), PAS, and Syed Hamid can accept her reason and sympathise with her. I think Gerakan and MCA also seem to be supporting her (perhaps with a longer plan of bringing back this issue in next election). I remember reading PAS statement that a person can buka aurat in their own house, and yet say that for Muslims its wrong to be “berdua-duaan”. Unfortunately, Elizabeth is not a muslim, thus what Islam-based leaders, thinkers, political parties, and scriptures say is irrelevant here.

Ultimately, she has to answer to her own conscience, and of course the party may play a role too. The PR leader will be worried that her case will be used in the Twin Peaks by-elections. Thus, there’s an internal element of pressure to resign as well on her.

The residents of Bukit Lanjan seemed to be happy with her work. MBPJ councillors also rate her favorably. NGOs too. Thus if they come out in force to show their support, Elizabeth may as well stay in position. She has offered her resignation, which the MB said will confer with the Sultan before making any decision.

The Sultan of Selangor most likely rule for resignation. That’s my opinion.

While the media and public continue talking about this issue until the next one pops up, we shall not forget that getting the criminal is of utmost important. The person may have revenge or financial gain to reveal the pictures. As the parliamentary women’s caucus points out, its also sexual harassment crime.

Addendum:

– Chua Soi Lek denied the affair while Elizabeth admitted it was her photos

– Chua Soi Lek was married and having extra-marital affair while Elizabeth is single

– Chua Soi Lek did not offer to resign while Elizabeth did so

– Chua Soi Lek was willing participant while Elizabeth was not (at least so far)

– Public opinion on Chua was negative while its positive for Elizabeth

– Chua’s scandal exposure looked like a campaign while Elizabeth’s case may be motivated by revenge (till more evidence turns up)

– Both held public office thus have certain degree of responsibility

– Both cases involve moral issue but Elizabeth’s case is criminal in nature (sexual harassment)

MIC Elections on April 12

MIC announced today that the presidential election will be held on April 12th, which days before the Hindu New Year and barely a week after the two by-elections.

So far, the only challenger to Samy Vellu is Muthupalaniappan.

MIC’s all-powerful central working committee (CWC) today decided that the party’s presidential elections will be held in April.

At a press conference this afternoon, MIC president S Samy Vellu announced that nomination will be on March 22 and polling on April 12.

The veteran politician is expected to defend the post which he has been holding since 1979.

When asked if he would contest on April 12, he jokingly replied: “Maybe.”

The elections for the other positions have yet to be fixed but observers believe they will be held between June and September this year.

Samy Vellu denied suggestions that the presidential polls were intentionally being timed after the Bukit Selambau by-election, saying the party was acting in accordance to its constitution.

“Three months before the expiry of the position of president, the party must call for an election,” said Samy, adding that his term officially expires on May 26.

Looks like the trend of changing cars is catching on. Terengganu, Perak, Selangor, and now Sabah. They’ve chosen Volvo instead of Mercedes or Toyota:

The Sabah government is replacing part of its Proton Perdana official cars with Volvo cars because they will be cheaper to maintain.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said the Volvo cars, to be acquired by state government-linked Angkatan Hebat Sdn Bhd, would be used by the 12 ministers and 16 assistant ministers.

“Senior civil servants, including the permanent secretaries in the various ministries, will continue to use the Proton Perdana cars,” Musa said after the Cabinet meeting yesterday.

Body Snatching blamed on MyKad

Got this from MHS website:

PRESS STATEMENT : MHS Saddened By Confiscation Of Body.

The Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) is gravely disturbed to understand that the body of a deceased man, a practicing Hindu, has not been released to his wife and family for final rites. MHS is informed that the body is being retained by the Serdang Hospital mortuary upon the interference by Islamic Authorities, who have claimed that the deceased is a Muslim.

Mr Amaran was killed in a road accident on 15th February 2009, and his body was sent to the Serdang Hospital for post-mortem. His wife, Valarmathi, was shocked when informed by the hospital mortuary that her late husband’s body could not be released to her for Hindu funeral rites, as the authorities had laid claim to his body for Islamic burial rites instead.

His family maintains that Amaran has been a practicing Hindu all his life. He was married according Hindu ceremonial rites, and his marriage was also recorded in the Civil Registry as him being a Hindu. His children are also registered as Hindus. The family has explained to MHS that when Amaran changed his identity card to the new MyKad, the National Registration Department had erroneously listed his religion as Muslim, when in actual fact he was a practicing Hindu. He had notified the department of this at the time.

This situation is most disturbing and goes against the grain of the spirit of dialogue that has been ongoing between MHS and ACCIN (the Allied Coordinating Committee of Islamic NGOs). This dialogue has been aimed at overcoming conflicting situations such as this from arising, as has been experienced in several prior incidents.

The MHS strongly urges the authorities to immediately release the body of the deceased to the wife and family, so that they may be able to placate their grief on their loss, by completing the necessary funeral rites.

Let the family be at peace. The true spirit of Muhibbah must prevail.

Dated 17th February 2009

Datuk A Vaithilingam
President
Malaysia Hindu Sangam

So, there will be a rush to check our MyKad using Astro decoder dish.  Unless some sordid secret life of the deceased appears, it appears that for all purposes and intent, the deceased is an Hindu.

What the family should do now is get an court order to stop any body snatching and then get some documentation from Registration Dept showing that the error in religion was highlighted prior to his death. I find it ridiculous that just based on the MyKad the so called “authorities” can claim the body. What about proof of conversion? Is there any document in the state religious departments? Are there any witnesses to his conversion? Or was he actually born as a Muslim but the truth hidden from everyone.

I had heard one case where the deceased was a convert (happened in university due to love). But the guy hid the truth from everyone except his mother. The mother married him off to a Hindu lady and they had a kid. When they went to register the baby, the truth came out that her beloved husband was a Muslim.  The wife was forced to convert to Islam in order to keep the children (someone misled her at that time). All the children are now muslims and one of them is getting married to a Malay. The mockery of it is that they don’t practise any of the Islamic tenets. Name only muslim,  but the lady goes to temple and wears her Thali.

I’m back…

Well, after 5 days without much access to news or Internet, I’m flooded with loads of email and news. Just got some bits and pieces from NTV7 and Tv3 Nightline buletines.  Among the major news to rock us this week is obviously the private photos of Selangor state assemblyman for Bukit Lanjan, Elizabeth Wong. Besides that, the King’s “warning” on believing bloggers, the flood of statistics confirming economic recession, and spat between MIC and UMNO Youth over Bukit Selambau by-election candidate. Then, there’s the suspension of new Perak MB and his 6 EXCOs by the state speaker, which effectively puts the whole state assembly into a mess. Of course, we can’t leave out the alleged killing of 6 criminals in Kulim nor the lack of medical attention for ISA detainee Uthayakumar which may result in a toe amputation. Let’s see what else I missed – Selangor MB files suit against Khir Toyo, ISA detainee Manoharan (assemblyman for Kota Raja) denied release, and another interesting news today:

Royal duo in cafe brawl

SUBANG JAYA: Two members of the Selangor royalty tested positive for drugs after being involved in a brawl at a cafe here early yesterday morning.

The two, along with five others, were injured in the fight and were taken to the University Malaya Medical Centre by police immediately for treatment.

Later, accompanied by two women, the two lodged a police report at the Subang district police station.

Selangor Chief Police Officer Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed the incident, adding all seven were subjected to urine tests, but only the two members of royalty tested positive for drugs.

“They have been released on police bail,” said Khalid, adding police were also investigating the motive for the fight.

“Let us conduct our investigations. Those who are found guilty will be charged.”

It was, however, learnt that the two royals, in their 20s, had gone to the Chanai cafe on Jalan SS15/4 to have supper about 1.30am.

Sources said when they finished, they called for the bill and on seeing the amount, one of them threw the bill to the ground.

“A commotion suddenly ensued and one of the royals grabbed a mug and smashed it on the shopowner’s head.

“Within seconds, other workers in the cafe joined the brawl and it became a free for all,” said a source.

It was learnt that several patrons had to intervene and break up the fight.

Police arrived at the scene within minutes and detained seven for investigations.

The cafe owner was treated at the hospital with seven stitches for a head wound.

This kind of embarasses the royal family alot, especially when there’s a certain holier-than-thou impression, and more so after a furore of statements from royal houses advising the rakyat.
We can force politicians or civil servants to resign, failing which they may be sacked in certain cases. But how about…
Around the world, monarchies are becoming rare. I guess the system may be reduced to being symbols or disappear altogether within 100 years, with the possible exception of Thailand and Japan. Things are not like 500 or even 100 years ago. The overflow of information, the self-belief/confidence of individual, and the globalisation of world residents may well see people start questioning many, many things. Of course there are laws and rules which control what people can question about, but things change, and we hope for the better.
Yeah, you can blame in on bloggers or even the weather, but you can’t stop people from thinking. Not in this age.
