Kampung Pandan Indian Settlement gets eviction notice

Kampung Pandan community’s worry had become a reality since they have been given an eviction notice. Before the elections, the community openly said that since 1980s, BN representatives could not do anything to help. Even meeting between Samy Vellu and officials from City Hall was not fruitful. They ended up supporting PAS candidate.

The residents were worried about the tamil school, temple and madrasah located there.

To quote from earlier posting:

“Samy Vellu told us he is so close to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that he can flick Abdullah’s ear. He hasn’t done anything since,” said Rajoo.

So, the community had a demonstration on Sunday protesting the eviction notice.  According to NST, 200 police were placed to guard the 150 “squatters” who have lived there since before independence time.

This is going to be a problem from FT Ministry, MIC, PPP senators, and all those who said that temples WON’T  be demolished. What will happen to the school? Dare they step up and solve the problems, or cite more technicalities and rules to hide their inability to keep their promises? If they can’t do it, don’t make empty promises. Something that Pakatan Rakyat states are being accused of as well.

Kampung Pandan Indian Settlement Action Committee chairman Suresh Kumar said the protesters were not objecting to the notices, but they want more time to further discuss the issue with City Hall.
“How can they serve us a one-month notice on June 10, asking about 3,000 people to move out by July 8? The 270 houses have been here for 51 years,” he said.

“They offered us rented units in the DBKL low-cost flats in Kampung Muhibbah, Puchong, in the past but we declined because it was too far away.”

He said there were several issues they wanted to discuss with City Hall, adding that they wanted to know what the plans for the redevelopment of the squatter land were.

They want City Hall to build low-cost flats where their houses are located and give them the units for free as compensation. They also want compensation for the demolished temples and for them to be rebuilt by City Hall.

Hindu Rights Action Force coordinator S. Jayathas and Pas officials were present.

Fathers Day at Istana Negara

Following is report from Malaysiakini on the HINDRAF-organised Father’s Day gathering at Istana Negara today. Earlier, it was reported that YB Manikavasagam and YB Sivarasa were among the 6 people arrested at the gathering.

Interestingly, Ronnie Liu ACCEPTED the bear on behalf (of the KING?). I’m not sure who he is representing, definitely not the King.

I think Hindraf have to look beyond flowers, teddy bears and other gifts, as it may be shunned if seemed to be not effective. There should be some brainstorming session to ensure it gets continuous support from the Makkal. Makkal will forget the suffering and sacrifices of the Hindraf 5 if not constantly reminded, but there should be variety of ways to maintain the momentum. Perhaps some sort of branding and merchandising strategy – T-shirts, caps, car stickers, badges could be created. They can get support in the Pakatan states, so that’s a good starting point.

The intention of 48 children of ISA detainees to present Father’s Day gift of teddy bears to the Agong was dampened by the police and a no-show from palace representatives.

Chanting “Daulat Tuanku”, the children carrying teddy bear bouquets accompanied by about 30 adults were stopped from approaching the palace by police who formed a barricade 500 meters from the palace gates at around 10.40 this morning.

Policemen, already alert after an earlier arrest of three opposition parliamentarians, were quick to gather around the crowd. A senior police officer approached event leaders who were Hindraf leaders – RS Thananenthiran (national coordinator), S Jayathas (national information coordinator) and A Vathemurthy (Perak state coordinator) – requesting that the crowd to disperse immediately.

Thananenthiran then shouted that “We are Malaysian citizens who would like to present a gift to the father of all Malaysians.”

There were continuous pleas from the crowd which argued that as Malaysian citizens they should have the right to gather in front of the palace without a permit.  “Tourists are allowed to gather and present gifts, so why can’t we? This must be changed. We have all the right to rally peacefully,” said Vathemurthy.

The heat under the strong sun caused some of the children – from five to 15 years of age – to begin crying in discomfort.

Thananenthiran then asked the police to be compassionate with the children. The police officer fired back that although he loved children, they were being only being ‘utilised’ by Hindraf leaders. » Read more: Fathers Day at Istana Negara

Nijhar tells why…

What made me pause was this:

A large part of the Subang constituency is made up of highly-educated people. So, they would naturally vote for someone who is better educated than them,” said Nijhar, who holds a doctorate in economics from the Australian National University.

Naturally???

Anyways, contrary to earlier report about giving way to others, Nijhar clarifies the reasons for him quitting vice president post:

1. not being informed about him being dropped from 2008 election candidate list

2. sacking of Jumbo Maniam without proper hearing by the CWC due to questions on AIMST accounts.

3. rebranding exercise

Basically he tells that its Samy’s fault.

MIC vice-president Tan Sri K.S. Nijhar’s decision to quit his post last month was a culmination of factors involving party chief Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
His first grouse was that he had been dropped from the list of candidates for the 2008 general election. The worst cut, according to Nijhar, was that he had not been informed of the decision.

“A large part of the Subang constituency is made up of highly-educated people. So, they would naturally vote for someone who is better educated than them,” said Nijhar, who holds a doctorate in economics from the Australian National University.

“If I had stayed on as the candidate, I would have won. MIC and the Barisan Nasional would have another parlimentary seat now,” the 72-year-old added.  Nijhar, who had won the seat in 1999 and 2004, said party leaders had a responsibility to inform people in advance if they wanted to drop them. » Read more: Nijhar tells why…
