I was at a family function today and had a shock! Imagine ladies aged between 20s and 50s talking politics, instead of mega-serials and cooking recipes. Well, that’s what HINDRAF has done. These ladies are the working category, in a multi-racial environment. They shared their experiences and latest news (rumours as well) on current election campaign. From Saravanan (standing in Tapah) being labelled with not-so-kind-words, to talking about situation if no indian representatives are in parliment, these ladies signify the huge leap that is happening in the Indian community.
They are familiar with SMS, video clips, websites. They seem to know all the latest news, while even myself have problem aggregating the avalanche of information that comes in a day. The power of the mobile phones cannot be underestimated. What the internet can’t do, the mobile phone can. And this may be something that can expose weakness of MIC. Imagine if Phillipines can have a change of government due to the SMS campaigns.
I believe the Indian women are becoming more politically aware. They are eager to learn and get involved. With more exposure to media and ability to communicate, they are able to pass on messages and discuss with their fellow friends. Thus, one of the key to make a significant change in the coming elections is to influence the ladies.
We have also seen in youtube videos, women leading the marches and rallies, or shouting at SV in the protests. They are rising…and the candidates better be prepared.
With the network that ladies have – their friends and relatives, they can provide information and influence others.
Yes bro.. It ‘s amazing to see such mindset change and political awareness among Indians nowadays. Even some of my friends who didn’t give a damn about social and political issues all this while now seems to be more interested and well aware of the current happenings.
