Very rarely does this happen after the list is announced. Even though SV spins some story about valuing women wing efforts, complaints from women members, I suspect Soorianarayanan spilled the beans when he mentioned there are more female voters in Tenggaroh.

Why is that important? Well, I can’t say for the whole country, but today I witnessed women power

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 (Bernama) — Despite being named the candidate for Tenggaroh state seat in Johor two days ago, MIC Teberau Johor chairman M. Soorianarayanan will not be able to contest in the March 8 general election as he will be replaced by MIC Johor Wanita chief. MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu in a statement here today announced that Soorianarayanan will be replaced by T. Murukasvary, 51, a teacher with a diploma in child education. He said that this has been approved by Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

According to Samy Vellu, the decision was made due to requests from Wanita MIC members who wanted a woman candidate. The MIC president said that he has received complaints from Johor MIC Wanita via SMS and telephones. Samy Vellu said that the MIC valued the support and sacrifices made by its wanita members who formed 55 percent of the party’s strength. “In the general election women will play an important role in realising the Barisan Nasional’s success,” he said.

The Tenggaroh seat was previoulsy held by MIC Johor deputy chairman Datuk S. Krishnasamy who was shot dead infront of the MIC Johor headquarters last month. In Johor, MIC will also contest in the Kahang state seat (R.Vidyananthan), Permas(M. Munusamy) and Gambir (M. Asojan) while party secretary-general Datuk Dr S.Subramaniam will defend his Segamat parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile, Soorianarayanan, when contacted in Johor Baharu, said that although he was disappointed with the decision, he would still gvie his full support to ensure Murukasvary’s victory. He said that Samy Vellu called him at about 12 noon today to inform him about the decision. “I cant do anything. It is all right. As a loyal party worker I will abide by the decision,” he said.

Soorianarayanan said that one of the reasons that probably led to the request for a woman candidate could be due to the fact that the Tenggaroh state seat has more women voters than male. As an experienced party worker with good grassroot support, Soorianarayanan said he knew that “such things could happen.” “Maybe luck is not on my side this time. What is more important is for me to continue to serve the party and the people. And I will do that,” he said.
