The statistics below says for last 5 years, meaning 2005-2009 I think. Out of the more than 15k Malaysians, more than 80% were Chinese. I guess the attraction is for places where the grass is presumed to be greener.
Oriental Daily reported that more than 15,000 Malaysians have given up their citizenship in the last five years.
Of the number, 12,410 were Chinese.
A total of 984 Malays, 762 Indians and 1,302 of others also ceased to be Malaysians in the same period.
Quoting National Registration Department director-general Datuk Alwi Ibrahim, the daily reported that most of them migrated to Singapore, Brunei, England, Germany, New Zealand, Canada, India, Australia, Indonesia, Japan and the United States.
In 2007, a total of 4,565 Malaysians migrated and 4,649 last year.
In 2008, only 1,994 Malaysians left the country.
Another year which recorded low numbers of people migrating was in 2005 (1,525).
Alwi also said a total of 25,996 people of various nationalities have red identity cards.
