Mindsblog Photoshoot at Batu Caves

I was feeling a bit guilty for not attending any of Mindsblog gatherings so far due to busy schedule (and the fact that I’ll be the oldest fella around didn’t exactly motivate me). So, when the Mindsblog admin announced a photoshoot outing at Batu Caves, I gave my standard “will try to come if nothing else crops up” reply, but told myself I’ll be there.Latest update showed 11 people confirmed (minus myself), so I was hoping to meet many new faces. And I won’t be the oldest since Selian was coming too ๐Ÿ™‚

Thus, on Saturday morning, managed to drag myself out of bed, settle dog-walking, garden watering, and a quick breakfast before speeding off to Batu Caves. Had to utilise my racing skills to reach Batu Caves at 9.13am (left at 8.36am, that means 37 mins from Puchong to Batu Caves).

I was ready to apologise for being late, but to my utter dissappointment no one was there! Immediately called the person in charge, who was on the way. Next person to arrive was Rames. I’ve seen his blog before, and he is good. As for me, hmm…like land and sky, if compare with him or Selian.

Anyway, managed to get some tips and advice from Rames, and we decided to start shooting away while waiting for others to arrive. The weather was cloudy and quite a number of tourists were milling around. We did not go up the stairs, but just took photos at ground level. The main attraction without a doubt were the pigeons and the monkeys. Oh ya, Lord Muruga’s golden statue as well.

I was tired by around 10.00am, and told Rames that we should take a break. By then, the organiser arrived – Amutha, who brought a guest, Parimala. We adjourned to Rani Restaurant. Being the ever-inquisitive (kepoh) person, I think I may have irritated the rest with many questions. Sorry guys ๐Ÿ™‚

We resumed our activity at about 10.40am, and decided to go up the stairs into the main cave. Selian joined us halfway up the stairs. So, that’s 5 people already. We spent more than 1 hour in the cave taking shots. While up there, another two people turned up – Pushparaaja and Sundra (hope i got that correct). Up to 7 people now.

We came down at about 1pm. Took some group shots. The next activity was to enter the Kalai Kudam (Art Cave) but since I have other commitments (well, have to show I’m busy person ma!!!), I took leave.

Ok, that’s for the reporting part. Now the comments and opinions:

1. I think those who promised to come must inform the organiser if they can’t make at last minute. This will spare us from waiting unneccesarily. No point giving your name, but then go AWOL. Especially the models. ๐Ÿ™‚

2. In future, a small tutorial/lecture/talk on photography concepts will be useful so that it will inspire bloggers to learn more about their camera. Nothing heavy, but some basic ideas and theories will suffice (err..are theories considered heavy?)

(update: Ronaldo scores. Man Utd 2-0 WBA). So, now you know what I’m doing at 2.00am.

3. Should structure the event so that we have a timeplan and focus. For example, 1 hour at ground level, 1 hour in cave, and so on.ย  Will ensure better use of time.

Overall, I had a good time and met new friends.ย  I liked Rames and his positive attitude. He is easy-going and willing to share his knowledge. Parimala was vivacious and bubbly (hehehe…i hope its the correct English word to use!), a welcome addition to the group. Didn’t really got a chance to talk to Pushparaaja and Sundra. Fret not, we shall meet again.

(update: Berbatov scores his first goal for Man Utd. 3-0 now).

Ok, I’m going off-tangent here. The main reason for the outing was to take PHOTOS, not chit-chatting with people. I’ve uploaded the pics at Picasa. I’m not into editing, so its WYSIWIS (What You See Is What I Shot). Images are JPG and resized from 700-800kb to 70-100kb. Originals are in RAW.

(update: Nani scores. Man Utd 4-0 WBA. Looks like the Big Four all scored at least 3 goals)

Raya open house visitors called to police station

Yup, following the hints given by Home Minister Syed Hamid, the police have started to call people in for questioning. But its not under the Societies Act. 4 people from HINDRAF and another 3 from the “Free RPK” group have been summoned. Surind Raj wrote about it in his blog. Another visitor, Haris Ibrahim have not updated his blog yet at the time of this posting.

Malaysiakini reports that 4 HINDRAF people were summoned – K Shanti, wife of Hindraf leader-in-exile P Waythamoorthy, Hindraf information chief S Jayathas, Selangor coordinator K Tamilselvam and national events coordinator R Kannan. Hmm…looks like they missed the small girl! The four of them have received a written notice under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code to report to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters on Tuesday to give their statements. According to the notice signed by ASP Sydney Clyde Jeremiah, they are being investigated for illegal assembly under Section 27 (5) of the Police Act, as well as trespass under Section 447 pf the Penal Code.

I’m not a legal expert, but illegal assembly? That’s going to be hard to stick with. Trespassing – possible if those people were found to have entered areas prohibited to the public or not part of the open house celebrations. However, Hindraf legal advisor Surendran (i suspect he will be arrested soon as well…for one thing or another) says:

Hindraf legal advisor N Surendran described the action against the activists as a form of harassment against the movementโ€™s supporters.

โ€œIt was an open event. It is absurd to call it an illegal gathering and (to call it) trespassing is even more ridiculous. The authorities have really scraped the bottom of the barrel this time,โ€ he said.

Meanwhile, the Free RPK group members were also not spared:

Blogger and commercial banker P Surind Raj told Malaysiakini that he and two others – lawyers Haris Ibrahim and Amarjit Sidhu – will have to report to ASP Sydney tomorrow afternoon.

However, there was no information as to which provisions of law they are deemed to have breached.

When contacted, Haris said that he has been summoned to give a statement but the police did not inform him if he was being investigated. “I will not presume that I am being investigated,” he said, adding that he would be at the Dang Wangi police station at 2.30pm tomorrow.

My First Earning from Blogging

Thank you guys and gals! Drop by more often and don’t forget to click on those ads! ๐Ÿ™‚

My total earning from Nuffnang ads from mid 2007 till July 2008 just came in the mail:

Nuffnang First Cheque

Apologies for blocking out certain information on the document. Just to increase a bit of privacy. As for the amount, I leave to you to guess ๐Ÿ™‚

To tell the truth, I did not expect to get any money from blogging. Just added some Google, Nuffnang, and Advertlet ads after I started blogging since last year. Two events received high number of visitors, resulting in advertisements that pay more per click. The two events were Hindraf rally in November 2007 and the General Elections in March 2008. Other than that, I have regular stream of visitors on weekdays and about half of the average on weekends.

I’ve not checked on Google Adsense since I doubt it will be more than few US dollars, while I gave up on Advertlets after Nuffnang offered Gliterati status or something. Anyway, not that my life depended on earnings from advertisements or blogging.

Blogging for me is to fulfill my own needs – talk about community and socio-politics. Obviously if you blog about sensational stuff or products, you tend to get higher number of visitors. Or you can be a well known personality like TDM who hit 1,000,000 visitors in a very short period (I’m still in the thousands- duh!).

In the very near future, I’ll be restructuring this blog, and perhaps start a new one. Having movies, travels, and personal evetns together with socio-politics, education, and community topics doesn’t really gel. I’ve been neglecting the movie reviews for quite some time now.

Once again, Thank you! Nandri! Terimaaaaaaa Kaaaasih!

Only Malaysiakini had reported this news so far. Others haven’t picked it up yet.

Controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin has been detained under the Internal Security Act, said his wife Marina Lee Abdullah.According to her, Raja Petra was arrested when 10 police personnel who arrived at his home in Sungai Buloh at 1.10pm.
When Malaysiakini contacted her at 1.25pm, the police personnel were still there.
Marina said that Raja Petra has yet to appoint a lawyer to handle the matter.
This is the second time Raja Petra has been detained under ISA, which allows detention without trial.
His first arrest under the tough security law was in 2001, where he detained as part of a crackdown against reformasi activists in which nine others were also held.
Raja Petra was released about two months later. However, six of the reformasi leaders were eventually sent to the Kamunting Detention Centre in Taiping where they were detained for two years

Poobalan on THR Raaga

Yeah, it was me on THR this morning, though I had problem recognizing my own voice! Do I sound that bad? ๐Ÿ˜† Even though I had talked on Minnal FM and also appearedย  on a song request program in Astro Vaanavil previously, the butterflies are still there!

The short phone interview was aired at about 7.45am, so I doubt many would have been tuned to THR. It was a pleasant surprise when friends SMSed me after hearing it. Hmmm..didn’t know you guys were THR listeners ๐Ÿ™‚

Actually, the interview was recorded yesterday noon. DJ Uthaya called at about lunch time, and together with DJ Ananda, he posed some questions on blogging. They were going to talk about alternative media and wanted to highlight blogging to the Indian community (or something like that). I was busy with some work, so just shot off whatever came into my head. I mentioned about the reasons people blog, meaning of blog, gave my URL, example of bloggers who make money blogging, and before I knew it, the interview was over. Just about 3 minutes.

Before I had chance to ask how they got my number or when the interview will (if at all) be aired, the call ended. So, I had no clues at all.

My questions on how they managed to contact me was answered later at night. First I thought it was those Putera MIC fellas who are organising Manya Awards, but it was another blogger, Selian.

Well, I hope my tiny weeny contribution will motivate more people, especially from the Indian community to start blogging. You can blog about anything. If you need help, just drop me an email. [Updated: email address]
