KUALA LUMPUR, TUES:

Chinese and Tamil primary schools were short of 1,341 teachers as of June 30, Education Ministry parliamentary secretary P. Komala Devi told the Dewan Negara today.

She said there were 1,163 vacancies in Chinese schools and 178 in Tamil schools.

As an interim measure to address the problem, the ministry had engaged contract and temporary teachers, he said when replying to Senator Lee Sing Chooi during question time.

Komala said the problem would be overcome when college-trained and diploma holders are posted to the schools when the 2008 school term starts.

She also said 431 Chinese and 65 Tamil school teachers would retire this year.
