Guidelines for temples by MHS

Wonder how many of them will follow the “guideline” since its just a guideline. Is MHS going to come out with some compliance sticker or publish a list of compliant temples on its website? Would the community be interested in such compliance?

BTW, someone said got 20,000 thousand over temples, but MHS says got only 3,300.  We have 222 parliament constituencies. Can we find an average of 100 temples each parliamentary constituency?

All the Hindu temples in the country will have guidelines by the end of this month, Malaysian Hindu Sangam (MHS) president RS Mohan Shan said today.

He said the guidelines would comprise the suitable rules and regulations that a temple should practise in order to preserve the rituality.

“So far, there are no suitable guidelines for a temple to follow, and they are free to do all kinds of programmes at any time they wish.

“We are going to bring out the guidelines on how a temple should be positioned, which temple to conduct which celebration, and how to manage a temple,” he told Bernama.

The guidelines, among others, would encourage all the temples in the country to start providing community service, he said, adding that the management of temples should also think of the community, and not just religion and rituals.

“The guidelines will be prepared by a religious advisory board involving all Hindu association presidents and also religious experts,” he said.

So far, Mohan Shan said, only 2,000 of the 3,300 Hindu temples in the country have registered under the MHS.

“We are asking all our local council members to approach the temples to become members of the MHS as we are the only organisation that deals with temple issues,” he said.

Father of Hindu Youth passes away

My experience with HYO is way back nearly two decades ago, when I attended their computer class at Port Klang branch while waiting for SPM results. After that, I’ve seen them at some of the religious festivals at temples, but never been involved in their programs.

One of the founders of HYO passed away yesterday. Condolences to his family. Read about the late Mr Vijayaratnam here.

Malaysian Hindu Youth Organisation (HYO) founder, Vijayaratnam Saravanamuthu, passed away Wednesday at the Gleneagles Hospital here from respiratory complications.

He was 77.

Vijayaratnam, fondly referred to as the “Father of the Hindu Youth”, founded HYO in 1949 and had contributed immensely to its growth, which has some 90 branches nationwide now.

During his lifetime, Vijayaratnam had organised many Hindu Youth conventions in various parts of the country and he was elected the first secretary-general of the Malaysian Youth Council in 1962.

HYO in a statement said Vijayaratnam leaves behind a wife Pushpavathy Chinniah and two sons, Datuk Vijay Eswaran, 51, and Vijaya Vicknesh, 49.

matriculation exam starting day after Deepavali

Time after time we notice the same issues. Officially of course its a one day public holiday, but where’s the sensitivity, acceptance, understanding and empathy? You don’t expect students to go back for the festival and return in a day, do you? We don’t see any exams on the very next day of Hari Raya, Chinese New Year or X’mas, even though official holidays are one or two days only.

Conclusion: convenience of the majority is of more importance than the convenience of the minority, even if the convenience of the minority doesn’t cost/affect much?

And MIC, is still at the stage of “hoping” after so many years. They should have blasted the relevant departments instead of dragging ministers into this. Simple thing also want to see PM or minister. Very embarrassing.

It is very sad that education institutions that are supposed to instill good values of understanding others cultures, acceptance, tolerance etc is in the forefront of being ignorant, apathetic, intolerant and insensitive. What kind of impression are they giving to the students and staff? Year in, year out the same thing happens. But since everyone is hopping on to 1Malaysia bandwagon in recent times, the folks at Bahagian Matrikulasi should thought ahead and foreseen this issue. Should we blame them entirely, or the education and social system that they grew up in? Being minority is not easy, and to think its going to get worse is indeed scary.

MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel said he had spoken to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak about the matriculation examination that has been fixed a day after Deepavali on Oct 27.

Palanivel said he had also spoken to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who said the Education Ministry was aware of it.

“Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is also Education Minister, said they were considering postponing the exam to a new date,” he said via SMS to Bernama here on Friday.

Palanivel, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said he raised the matter after receiving complaints through SMS and phone calls from the Indian community.

He said postponing the matriculation exam would go down well with Indians celebrating Deepavali and hoped the deputy prime minister would make an announcement soon. – Bernama

Hopefully they can work with Hindu Sangam and other existing organisations, and not splinter the community further. Can focus on reducing conversion cases, help to poor community and also classes in temples/schools.

PRESENTLY, many questions are being raised by Hindu devotees related to Hindu Saiva philosophy and practices. There is also a lack of understanding as well as confusion over the rituals practised.

In view of this, president of Malaysian Saiva Religious Council Dr. A. Nagappan said the council has been formed to serve the Hindu community .

“The aim of the council is strictly educational and its objectives are to widen knowledge of Hindu Saiva philosophy and to clarify as well as reform practises,” he said.

This is in line with the need for new awareness for the present times. The newly registered council will be holding classes and forums based on a structured and scheduled curriculum.

The esteemed Seervalarseer Sivapprakasa Thesiga Paramaachariyar, the 23rd Gurumahasannithanam of Thiruvaavaduthurai Aatheenam will officially inaugurate the council on Aug 14 at the Sithi Vinayagar Temple Hall, Petaling Jaya.

Membership is RM10 and annual fee is RM30. All Hindus are welcome to attend and seek knowledge and understanding of their religion. Breakfast and lunch will be served

This is a new initiative by Hindu Sangam. The details are available at their website:

http://www.hindusangam.org.my/our-projects/195

Basically they aim to collect RM1 per Hindu per month (or total of RM12 per year). Target is 30% of the estimated 1.75 million Hindus in Malaysia. The donations will be used to fund projects and activities under their Hindu Renaissance Action Plan (HRAP).

Of course it goes without saying that transparency on the donations collected must be enforced.

Interested? You can donate to their CIMB account 1402-0176894-059 (Malaysia Hindu Sangam). Their donation form [pdf] is at:
