IGP warns of group playing up religious sentiments

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have exposed the activities of a group of so-called missionaries who go about criticising other religions. 

Inspector-General Tan Sri Musa Hassan said that 131 reports had been lodged by disillusioned followers, who were not happy about the activities of the group, which used Hinduism and Christianity as a front. 

“It has been found that many followers felt cheated,” he said in a statement yesterday. 

He said Selangor police were carrying out investigations based on the reports lodged by the followers. 

Musa said activities carried out in the name of religion that create disharmony, enmity and hatred could jeopardise national harmony and solidarity. It is also a form of criminal intimidation.  

He said that on April 13, representatives of the Association of Hindu Religious Leaders briefed him on the activities of the “missionaries”.  

He said the outcome of the police investigations would be forwarded to the Attorney-GeneralÂ’s Chambers for further action. 

Meanwhile, Malaysian Hindu Sangam president Datuk A. Vaithilingam said the group, operating in Kota Damansara, was active within the Klang Valley, holding spiritual talks to gain influence. 

He said they insulted the Hindu religion in their talks. – Bernama

good to hear that MHS does something – recently meeting the IGP, having joint press statement regarding subashini case, organising prayers at klang, and so on.
 
 
 

Resolving problems peacefully

THE Malaysia Hindu Sangam will not resort to demonstrations to resolve problems relating to the religion, Tamil Nesan reported. 

It quoted MHS president Datuk A. Vaithilingam as saying that they would hold discussions with the relevant parties or take action in accordance with the laws of the country. 

He said there several issues that touched on the religion had cropped up but they were being resolved through peaceful means. 

Speaking at the MHS Perak branch annual general meeting in Sungai Siput, Vaithilingam said state branches should take proactive measures to provide religious education to Hindus. 

Perak MHS chairman A. Egambaram said they had been working closely with the Perak MIC to overcome problems affecting the community.

KUALA LUMPUR: Keep your mouth shut and do your work, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has told Putrajaya Public Works Department (PWD) director Abdul Rahim Ahmad. 

“IÂ’ve told him before not to simply open his mouth and focus instead on his duties. He is in no position to issue statements. 

“As a director, he is supposed to take direction from us and not make press statements. All of this is cakap-cakap sahaja (empty talk),” he said. 

On April 12, Abdul Rahim cited poor design, shoddy workmanship and bad supervision and maintenance as the cause of the burst pipe at the Immigration headquarters in Putrajaya, which saw services halted for the day. 

The PWD director also claimed to have seen similar shoddy workmanship at several other buildings in the administrative capital. 

A clearly irritated Samy Vellu cautioned the director not to simply shoot his mouth off without facts to back him, adding that the incident at the Immigration office was still under investigation. 

“We have sent the pipe to a laboratory to be tested and we are still awaiting results. 

“What I can say now however is that the pipes supplied by Syabas are not the usual cast-iron ones,” he said. 

Speaking after the handing over ceremony of the new Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex in Jalan Duta here yesterday, Samy Vellu announced that the Government had compensated RM222.4mil in two payments to Gerbang Perdana Sdn Bhd for the cancellation of the Causeway bridge project. 

An additional RM35mil will be paid soon for the cancellation of the project, work done before the cancellation and the construction of a new bridge linking the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex and the Causeway.  

He also said the Cabinet had approved RM350mil for the building of an additional road linking the CIQ and Causeway.

KUANTAN: Pupils of several Tamil primary schools in Benta and Lipis are said to be occupying buildings which have been certified unsafe by the Public Works Department, a backbencher alleged at the state assembly yesterday.
Datuk M. Davendran (BN – Sabai) claimed that the pupils had no choice as there were no other buildings they could use.
“Not only do they have to stay in unsafe buildings, they also have to make do with second-hand school furniture.
“This should change as the pupils have every right to enjoy facilities like those in other schools nationwide,” he said when supporting the motion of thanks on the royal address tabled by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
On low-cost housing projects, Davendran said that none have been built in his constituency since he became the assemblyman in 1999 and hoped that at least one project would be developed in his area under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

A 100-member welfare brigade has been set up by the Subang MIC division to identify the problems faced by the Indian community in the Subang parliamentary constituency.
Division chairman N.R. Krishnan said the members would also be required to attend to the needs of the community, especially in the event of a natural disaster.
“If there is a fire, the members must be at the scene to console the victims and ensure that their needs are met,” he told The Star.
He said the members had also been directed to identify those who had not registered as voters and register them as the general elections are near.
Help team: Palanivel shaking hands with members of the newly set up welfare brigade members in Subang MIC division. Behind him is Nijhar. Earlier, MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel had launched the brigade as well as the new uniform for the members.
Palanivel, who is also the Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said the members should listen to the problems faced by the Indian community and try to resolve them.
He said members would then know what was happening on the ground and ensure the party was able to deliver the needs of the community.
Subang MP Tan Sri K.S. Nijhar, who sponsored the uniform, said the members must also compile a list of the voters in their area and identify new voters.
He said the division was the first in the party to have set up a welfare brigade.
