UPDATE: according to media statement released yesterday evening by HINDRAF, the restaurant owners deny ever mentioning to media that the attackers were “hindraf members” or “would not pay as they were fighting for indian rights”, instead claimed it was business rivalry. quoted below:

RE: 1. SRI PAANDI BOSS AND STAFF DENIES EVER MENTIONING TO TV1, TV2, TV3, TV7, BERNAMA OR THE MALAY MAIL AND THAT THE ATTACKERS WHO ATTACKED THEIR WORKERS AND EATERY WERE HINDRAF MEMBERS OR THAT THEY WOULD NOT PAY AS THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR INDIAN RIGHTS AND THAT BUSINESS RIVALRY IS THE REAL CAUSE OF ATTACK.

this is what we call as "menangguk di air keruh" – taking advantage of the situation.

Utusan reports that the men were armed with steel and knife, and that they escaped in two cars – Naza Ria and Toyota Hilux having false registration numbers:

“Mereka yang bersenjatakan sebilah parang dan sebatang besi kemudiannya bertindak memukul pekerja restoran tersebut yang berasal dari India dan merosakkan harta benda di restoran itu sebelum melarikan diri dengan menggunakan dua buah kereta jenis Naza Ria dan Toyota Hilux yang kemudian dikenal pasti menggunakan nombor pendaftaran palsu,” katanya.

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of men claiming to be Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) supporters helped themselves to a hearty meal at a restaurant in Brickfields on two consecutive days and left without paying.  The men destroyed furniture and kitchen equipment, causing losses amounting to RM5,000. They also slashed a worker with a parang and injured the right arm of another with an iron rod.

Numbering between eight and 10, they first turned up at the restaurant in Jalan Tun Sambanthan at about 3pm on Sunday.  They insisted that they should eat for free as they were Hindraf supporters fighting for the rights of Hindus.  The men, aged between 20 and 35, turned up again at about 7.30pm on Monday and helped themselves to the food.  They then went on a rampage, destroying 20 tables and kitchen equipment and attacked the two workers before fleeing in two vehicles.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Junaidi said one worker received 12 stitches while the other sustained a swollen arm. Both are Indian citizens. Three customers in the restaurant at the time were unharmed.

The restaurant owner, who declined to be named, said the men claimed to be Hindraf supporters, became aggressive and refused to pay the bill.  "Food was strewn everywhere and two men guarded the front and back doors of the restaurant with a parang to threaten customers," he said, adding that they had also assaulted the other restaurant workers.

Break for mum denied convert son’s bequest

PENANG: The Amanah Raya Berhad has offered to settle a suit by a Hindu woman who could not inherit the insurance monies left by her son who died a Muslim. High Court judge Justice John Louis O’Hara fixed Jan 29 for mention pending the settlement between Amanah Raya and 61-year-old cleaner M. Rukumony.

The woman had also named the Koperasi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia Berhad in her claim dated April 15, 2005. She claimed that her son E. Ragu, 23, who was an army ranger, was found in a coma at Kem Wardieburn Setapak Kuala Lumpur, and died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Aug 2, 2000.

In her claim, Rukumony said the co-operative had taken out a policy on her son but refused to pay her the RM56,300 and instead had deposited it with Amanah Raya. Ragu, a bachelor, had made a trust deed on Sept 6, 1999, and an assignment under Section 23 of the Civil Law Act 1956 on Feb 1, 2000, making Rukumony the beneficiary.

The co-operative said Ragu converted to Islam on Dec 31, 1999, and his Muslim name was Mohamed Redzuan Abdullah Ellaiappan. It claimed that under the Syariah Law, Rukumony could not inherit the property of her deceased son because she is a non-Muslim.  The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council has intervened in the case.

Counsel Darshan Singh Khaira represented Rukumony while Rosmaidar Mustafa represented Amanah Raya. Abdul Muiz Samsuri appeared for the council. Rukumony was not present in court yesterday.
