I wrote about the IMD’s Competitiveness Yearbook 2007’s results early of this year. 2008 results are just out. I’ll post the details later, but for the moment, our rankings improved 4 notches to reach 19th place. Good news indeed. However, the points this year are lower, meaning those above us previously had got much lower points – possibly due to economic stagnations? More later.

Malaysia improves on competitiveness ranking

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has improved on its world competitiveness ranking in the International Institute for Management Development’s (IMD) World Competitiveness Yearbook 2008 (WCY08).

In a report issued by the IMD on Thursday, Malaysia moved up four spots to 19th place with a score of 73.2 points out of 100.

Last year, Malaysia was ranked 23rd with 74.1 points. The United States maintained its first placing, while Singapore and Hong Kong maintained theirs at second and third respectively.

RAM Holdings Bhd chief economist Dr Yeah Kim Leng said the ranking was a “timely boost” for the economy. He said the rise was mainly due to significant improvement in the delivery system and other measures taken by the Government to improve efficiency and competition.

Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd economist Wan Suhaimi Saidi said that while the measures taken did have an impact, the ranking only gave a “first impression” to investors. He said the country still faced a host of challenges despite moving up the rankings.

‘We are candles that sacrifice ourselves’

MALACCA: The best teachers are often ones who endure great trials and tribulations simply to impart their knowledge to the next generation.  In that respect, the four recipients of Tokoh Guru 2008, which was awarded at the Teachers Day 2008 celebrations at Seri Negeri here yesterday, do not disappoint.

K. Krishnasamy’s father died when he was only 3, leaving his mother, a labourer with the Works Department and part-time milk vendor, to raise him.

Despite tremendous social and financial barriers, Krishnasamy’s perseverance and determination earned him not only career satisfaction but the national-level Tokoh Guru 2008 award.

“Teaching is a commitment. We are the candles that sacrifice ourselves to shine knowledge in the lives of younger generations,” said the 68-year-old from Selangor.
According to his wife, S. Indrani, Krishnasamy had never wanted to be anything other than a teacher.

Angry students and teary parents question PSD rejection

Hmm….every year also same drama. One just have to search the Internet to see many cases of students from all races complaining about the rejection.

Why is there no solution for this problem? MIC’s Dr S.Subra suggesting automatic scholarship offer for those who get 10As and above. MCA and Gerakan still quiet as with opposition.

Transparency is the key here. People deserve to know why things happen as such. Then, they should be able to give feedback and rectify the errors or shortcomings. Unfortunately, information flow is not so free as it is worried that the public is not smart enough to understand things.

Not bad, an increase of  393% !!! From 12k to 47k application. Of course, the statistics won’t be complete without comparison of application from the privileged community. Also, breakdown of jobs applied, gender, qualification, age etc. Then, most importantly, the number of application successful by race, job, gender, age etc.

MIC’s Saravanan have come out against the revocation of Waytha’s passport. I guess other MIC people will respond likewise soon.

So far, some people from Suhakam, Suaram, Aliran, and Hindraf lawyer have disagreed with the move to cancel Waytha’s passport. All are asking for reasons. In fact the move to revoke his passport most likely will backfire since Waytha applies for asylum, clearly indication political persecution. We can expect a few more drops in popularity status and international standings. The community prays that Waytha succeeds in getting his asylum.

Hmm…maybe next step is to revoke his citizenship. Well, anything can in Bolehland!
