Hmm..looks like this will be sticky point for the new government. DAP won most seats, but the Perak constitution says:
…that the candidate for Mentri Besar must be a Malay and profess the Muslim religion.
Perak DAP chief says:
…this requirement could only be overruled “provided that his Royal Highness may in His discretion waive either or both of the requirements of this clause relating to race and the Muslim religion whenever he shall consider it expedient to do so”.
He rightly mentions that since DAP won 18 seats, it should have a say in the choice of MB, but whether the Regent will accept a non-Muslim non-Malay as MB is yet to be seen.
Added to this problem is the demand from Indian community to have a Indian deputy minister. How is the fledgling govt going to balance the requests?
New ruling coalition to meet Perak Sultan over MB post
IPOH: State DAP, PAS and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leaders will seek an audience with the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah today to propose the names of two possible candidates to be the next Mentri Besar.
The meeting, set to take place at 4pm at Istana Kinta here, is expected to be attended by Perak DAP chief Ngeh Koo Ham, party secretary Nga Kor Ming, Perak PAS commissioner Ahmad Awang, party state election director Asmuni Awi, Perak PKR chairman Zulkifly Ibrahim and party election commissioner Ismail Yusop.
Ahmad said the coalition had arrived at the names of two suitable candidates who could assume the post of Mentri Besar. He, however, declined to reveal their identities and which party they were from. “We have agreed on the principle that the candidate should be a Malay. “The names were selected based on who, of the nine, would be the best and most suitable to take on the responsibility,” he said.
Speculation is rife that the first name offered up would be that of Perak PAS secretary Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin who clinched the Pasir Panjang state seat on Saturday’s polls. Mohammad Nizar, however, denied the rumours, saying he would wait for the party leadership to inform him of any development. When contacted, Zulkifly quashed the assumption that there was now a tussle between the three parties for the Mentri Besar’s seat. “It is just one seat. The best person will take the post. There is no argument between members of parties as to who should get it,” he said.
Ngeh also denied that there was a tussle but added the DAP central executive committee (CEC) will meet in Penang to decide on who from PKR or PAS would be the new Mentri Besar. “We will announce the decision tomorrow (today),” he told a press conference here. Ngeh, who won the Beruas parliamentary and retained the Sitiawan state seats, pointed out that the Perak Constitution states that the candidate for Mentri Besar must be a Malay and profess the Muslim religion.
He said this requirement could only be overruled “provided that his Royal Highness may in His discretion waive either or both of the requirements of this clause relating to race and the Muslim religion whenever he shall consider it expedient to do so”.
Ngeh declined to comment whether the DAP would stake a claim on the Mentri Besar post. “It is a decision that the CEC has to make,” he added. On why the DAP should determine who will be the next Mentri Besar, Ngeh said the party won the most number of state seats within the Opposition. The DAP secured 18 state seats while PKR took seven and PAS six.
If DAP which won the most munber of seats in the opposition cannot nominate MB from its own party, then UMNO which win most seats in Perak should try and woo the opposition. But can UMNO work with Keadilan, PAS or the DAP ?
MP: Are you serious? Please provide the link to the NST article(s) that mentions the massacre.
DAP can work with UMNO unofficially by nominating Tajol Rosli Ghazali as the Menteri Besar. Let us say “Tak Nak” to the PAS candidate as PAS is an Islamic fascist party that seeks to murder murtads (apostate Muslims). Most murtads in Malaysia are Malay Hindus and they are married Indian Hindus. Any Muslim who seeks to murder murtads is declaring a slaughter of non Muslims, and I am sure the non Muslim community will never accept PAS rule in Perak as they know very well from NST (a great and unbiased newspaper) that the PAS regime in Kelantan led by Nik Aziz has massacred 903 murtads under the Kelantan Syariah law.
Is this true?….Non-Muslim friends from Kelantan are applauding the rule of PAS as no issue….
I never heard of any such cases so far. That’s why I’m surprised!
going back to UMNO is pure nonsense. There is no murtad murders.
UMNO destroyed our temples. Not PAS goverment.
Whatever you may say about PAS, I still recall all their members voting for GOBIND singh deo in Puchong even though its impossible to be in India and vote for a Punjabi sikh.
Dont undo what the rakyat has done. PKR would be a good choice. Sivanesan would be a good choice for Deputy. We shall see. either way, if you are reading the main stream media. The next 5 years your mind will be filled with lies and nothing but lies. you guys must have voted for BN while reading the NST.
Come on, Read malaysiakini & malaysia today.
get your facts. TV3 stated yesterday Hukum Hudud will be implemented in Kedah. Which is false news. so dont be alarmed. People have rejected NST, Star & TV3. Indians should change their thought pattern. People have rejected BN. MIC is opposition in 4 states. Khir toyo will be ketua pembangkang.
dont go and fall back at the feet of MIC. Look for the reps who represent us with their hearts.
In NS 5 Indian reps vs 1 MIC rep. who will be working harder?
to avoid future problem, selection must be from DAP (malay, cninese or indian or lain-lain). so since DAP now don’t have Malay. must get some1 else, from DAP also. coz DAP win largest seat, universal democracy should apply and should not be restricted by law. coz any decision will set a precedent as referral under the law in future. i also dont hope to see future as a mess as a result of a bad decision.
DAP(majority seat) only agree PKR or DAP to become MB? Why PAS….Hopefully our nation not fluctuated tomorrow.
http://blog.limkitsiang.com/2008/03/12/no-dap-cec-mandate-for-pas-menteri-besar-in-perak/
C’mon DAP…., what’s wrong with having PAS member as an MB? This is politics, a marriage of convenience, there is no way the Sultan of Perak is going to consent one of you as an MB…. get real man…
besides, although PAS member is going to be the MB, he is just a puppet. He’ll do anything you want him to do….
u see as long as the decision make is wrong as can be seen in perak mb case. things will go wrong. because the palace choose a decison as oppose to the majority vote, by not giving the seat to DAP(irrespective of race). as long as DAP it will do. This depicts immature of the decision part. Flaw when we look under various aspect from law to rational situation. it is intyeresting that some one done an analysis that the populace of non-malay in perak is more than 50% in perak all this while since even before independence until now. reference –>http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/79706.
again i would stress, it is not about race. but right decision.
things is like a mess now. ppl that hit on LKS blog must be BN ppl. dont trust too much of them. sure some information that amissed to us. if not why raja petra aslo so suprised with the PAS as mb? palace conservativeness? i hope DAP all member will go behind electing DAP member as mb? non-bumi also dont so stupid hitting out before u all understand much. ITs not bout race. its bout righteous. AS long as DAp it will be ok irrespective of race. The king must waive the mb condition in this case. clear cut. since the 3 party say before election tat majority will lead and choose mb. dont tell me they havent think bout this rule of malay and muslim as mb requirement. so all must honour. submitting 3 name is just actually to show a easier way for the palace and coalition to gone down well with malay voter especially the BN. this is to shut them up when decision is make fr king. the palace should not take the goodwill of DAP that mean to save the peace, and turn the palace themself to hero.
