PSD claims cream of the crop were selected for PSD scholarship, but if you read the “Letters” page of the Star recently, it seems to show otherwise. I hope its not a case of shooting oneself in the foot here.

We can’t hide things in the current age. Today, news spreads in seconds. Lies can be uncovered easily. Two of the letters are available on the Star’s website while the other one is in the print edition only.

Letter 1 (source):

PSD should release details of scholarship recipients

I REFER to “Not for all top students,” (The Star, May 18) quoting the PSD Director-General saying that those who were awarded the PSD scholarship are the “cream of the crop”.

I am a 11A student and I was the top student of my school. I was denied the PSD scholarship. However, some of my friends who had fewer As were awarded seats for matriculation and PSD scholarships and they do not know which to choose.

They are my very close friends and they are shy to face me purely because I am the top student and I was not offered anything. They too feel sad for me.

As such I would like the PSD to be transparent and genuine in making such statements. I am sure many in my shoes would have encountered the same situation. » Read more: cream of crop?

uthaya makes new appeal

This case is getting interesting. His family and close supporters claim negligence, while SUHAKAM guy and authorities say everything was done according to rules. Perhaps its time to relook the rules if it is infringing on basic rights.

I’m surprised to hear that he is still been given starchy food. You would need a basic amount of carbo, but have to be controlled due to diabetic condition. So, is his diabetic levels being monitored?

Being in detention is the same as being a prisoner, isn’t it (except the trial part)?  So, loss of weight, skin problem, stress, weakness, etc. all can be expected. Being paralysed is not.

Can a patient waive his medical report confidentiality so that his relatives can get second opinion? Specifically, can a prisoner do so? We read in  papers that parents of a detainee (chinese) who died in look-up recently (I think i read it about 3 or 4 days ago) were denied access to medical reports by the police. But the guy did a medical check up before being arrested – which produced a clean bill of health. » Read more: uthaya makes new appeal

Not sure who are the rest of the committee members, so we can’t really comment on how these 4 will impact the decision-making. Since its mentioned that previous state government had formed the panel, we can see that more responsibility for the state assemblymen. I hope they don’t suffer a burnout soon.

I think its high time for someone to keep track of the all the posts each assemblymen is holding coz I’m losing count.

That aside, we obviously we hope that with the addition of the assemblymen, future places of worship problems will not arise or will be solved amicably.

Four reps appointed to religious panel

THE Penang Government has appointed four state assembly-men from different religions to the Non-Muslim Worship Committee, a state body that deals with complaints and disputes regarding non-Muslim institutions. They are state Town, Country Planning and Housing Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai (Air Itam), state Local Government, Traffic Management and Environment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow (Padang Kota), Penang Hindu Endowment Board chairman A. Tanasekharan (Bagan Dalam) and Jagdeep Singh Deo (Datuk Keramat). Wong, who heads the committee, is a Buddhist while, Chow is a Christian, Tanasekharan a Hindu and Jagdeep Singh a Sikh.

Wong said the committee would deal directly with government agencies to expedite the handling of disputes and issues. “There are many issues when it comes to religion. The committee’s job is to help settle disputes regarding land issues, the location of new temples, churches and gurdwaras, cemetery placements and all other issues that affect non-Muslim religions,” he said.  He said the past state administration had formed the committee and the appointment of the assemblymen was done at the state exco meeting last Friday.

When asked about the Gurdwara Sahib Bayan Baru Association’s appeal for a 0.4ha piece of land adjoining the Snake Temple in Bayan Lepas, Wong said Jagdeep Singh had highlighted the issue to the committee and they were currently waiting for relevant government agencies to provide reports.

mic admits lost support

Finally, Samy admits that MIC has lost the support, even though he says the support is “not like before” to soften the impact. Gerakan and MCA already admitted, while UMNO still beating around the bush here and there. I think the membership drive will face the hardest hurdles in Pakatan led states, since the community need not depend on MIC people like before. They have a choice, something that was an utopia before this. The man on the street, for the first time in his life has a bargaining chip in his hands. He can bring grouses to the new government and if nothing moves, move on to MIC, which will play the role of opposition and sensationalise things.

Enough of people sacrificing for the party, its time the leaders and the parties sacrifice for the people.

MIC: We have lost support

KANGAR: MIC admits the Indian community is not supporting the party like before. Party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said this was due to both internal and external issues. “There are also misconceptions among the people about the party. We are accused of not doing anything and there have been wild rumours going on about it,” he said at Perlis MIC’s annual convention at the Dewan Warisan, here.

Also present were MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel, vice-president Datuk S. Sothinathan, and MIC Wanita chief Datuk Paduka P. Komala Devi.

Samy Vellu said many in the Indian community held differing views from those of party leaders. “MIC has always been a trusted friend of the community. We are a dynamic party which continues to have close co-operation with the government. However, the people’s perception is different from ours.”

He said setbacks had prompted MIC to re-brand itself. The party would ensure that 50 per cent of its membership were youths.

He urged members to rally behind the party’s rebranding efforts.

Earlier in Kangar, Samy Vellu said more professionals and youths would be roped in to run MIC branches in a bid to regain the Indian community’s trust and confidence in the party and Barisan Nasional. He said the MIC would have to think of new strategies to woo them into the party, as previous approaches may not have been acceptable.Speaking at the opening of the Perlis state MIC convention here yesterday, he said the party had set its sights on young graduates, as part of its recently launched re-branding exercise. He also said the MIC would discard the “old methods” that had prevented members from voicing their ideas and dissatisfaction.

PKR newsletter named Makkal Sakthi

Alamak! Would Hindraf allow this? Makkal Sakthi is a common word, no one copyrighted it yet, so technically PKR can call their newsletter as such. However, if HINDRAF is to remain apolitical and as a pressure group and still be associated with the term “Makkal Sakthi”, then HINDRAF must ask PKR to not use the term for their newsletter. They must not be seen swaying too much to any one side, even though currently they are supportive of Pakatan side due to their similar causes.

KUALA LUMPUR: “Makkal Sakthi”, previously the rallying cry for the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), is now the name for the Tamil edition of Suara Keadilan, Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s newsletter.
The first issue hit newsstands yesterday and the copies were quickly snapped up by members of the Indian community.PKR information chief Tian Chua said yesterday that despite the “rebellious” title, the weekly newsletter is printed with permission from the Home Ministry.
