I’m quite surprised to hear this. I thought MARA is mainly (99% or 100%?) for Malay community, so how can funds from the Ministry is channeled to them? Does that mean that the Ministry only have funds for Malays all this while? Or is MARA’s role being expanded?

If it is the first case, that means the SEDC is for certain community only? That is quite bad. Imagine all the none PR states using funds for SEDC for benefit of certain race only.

If it is the seconds case, that means MARA will need to hire more people. But being a part of the discriminative set-up from 1970s, it will be hard to change the perception of MARA. MARA reminds us of MRSM and UITM (ex-ITM) which are among symbols of discriminative policies.

Whatever it is, I think this is a dirty tactic to ensure the community can get some benefits from certain people and to maintain the loyalty of the people.

The Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry will stop disbursing development funds to the state economic development corporations (SEDCs) in five states controlled by Pakatan Rakyat namely Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor.

According to a Bernama report, its minister Noh Omar said the fund would now be channelled to Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara).

“From now onwards it will be given through Mara,” he told reporters after opening the annual general meeting of the Perak chapter of the Malaysia Malay Chamber of Commerce in Ipoh today.

He said the disbursement of the fund was a long-held policy to help the people.
As the state governments controlled by the Pakatan Rakyat were hostile to the ministry, it was better for the fund to be disbursed through Mara, he added.
