Basic steps to apply IPTA
1. Calculate your CGPA (best 4 subjects)
2. Check with Syarat AM for IPTA
– generally, minimum CGPA 2.00, at least two subjects C, at least C in PA
– MUET Level 1 at least
3. Check Syarat KHAS for IPTA
– some courses have specific rules – like need to get minimum B for science subjects, or need to attend interview etc.
4. Short list courses that you fulfill in terms of Syarat AM and KHAS
– need to check UPU list of subjects : https://online.mohe.gov.my/upu/emas/index_epanduan.php
5. Refer to guideline on cut-off marks (means relevant CGPA needed to get a place in that course). Remember that this is a GUIDELINE prepared by hardworking volunteers. Government doesn’t provide such help. Refer to stpmindians.blogspot.com or quansheng.org
– further short list the courses by removing courses that your CGPA doesn’t qualify.
6. Pick the best 8 after talking to others – teachers, people working in that field, counsellors.
7. Apply via UPU and keep you fingers crossed. Praying helps too.
8. IF you are not able to meet IPTA requirements, the option are to study in IPTS. However, most IPTS also follow MOHE guidelines, meaning minimum 2.00 CGPA and 2 principal passes.
– Your options are to check with the relevant IPTS first if can enter degree program with your results. MAKE sure program is MQA accredited and you get confirmation from IPTS in written form. Cross check with PTPTN if can apply loan.
– If can’t do degree program directly, then next option is to enrol in diploma (using SPM results) or foundation (using SPM/STPM results). Think of this as a workaround, and not a failure. The path to education is always there, may be just take a bit longer than others.

Oh gayathri would u like to pass over yur email address to me so tat any info about it ill just forward it to u k ….
Hi, i myself don’t do any programs. what you can do is contact the people listed in this page and get advice from them.
Dear Sir,
I just finished my SPM & obtained 5A’s(Eng,Maths,History,Moral,Eng.gce-o ), 5 credits(Chem,Phy,Bio,Bm,Est,Accounts) & one pass(Add Maths).Wish to further studies ,but don’t know what to do and where to go since I’m disabled and is wheelchair bound. Can you please advice me what I should do and which university/collage ia disable friendly.
I need some counselling from you to do a course which is suitable.I’m considering accounts or IT.
Thank you.
Congrats Vinod on getting 5As. I would suggest that you apply to a place near to your home for convenience. but its not a must. most colleges/universities that are reputable are disabled-friendly. If can, make sure you visit the place first (especially private colleges/uni).
Both accounts and IT is good choice. But your accounts and add maths results not A. so perhaps you may want to reflect on why is it so? are you interested in accounts?
As for IT, most critical to choose a place that can offer latest skills, and good fundamental knowledge. don’t go for general IT degree. instead, study something specific that can be useful in industry.
i got pass only in moral and seni in SPM. The rest are fail. May I get info on courses available for me and the list of colleges, and other info.
thank you
Gayathri
Hi Gayathri,
1. take july paper and try get credit in BM and Maths.
2. If can resit SPM.
3. Try applying for training institutes (ILP). you can check under “application” page in this blog and contact the YSS officers for more advice.
Dear Sir,
I have just finished my STPM n dnt do well in it. All are just pass and no A’s. I thought of using my SPM results to apply for private university. I scored 5A’s (M3,ADD M3,English,Sejarah,EST) and 4B’s(BM,Chemistry,Physics, Moral) an unfortunately C5 In Biology. Im very intrested to study for Pharmacy or Accounts. Bt I have learnt that although I do my foundation in science and scored gud results in it (CGPA 3.5 above also) they will still refere back to my SPM Biology results which is below the required marks which is at least B4. Is this true?. So I really hope that you could help me to find the best way to solve this problems. I have considered in taking accounts bt Im scared if I do not have a bright future after I finished my degree. Many people say that accounts is tough and only if your are lucky, you will gt decent job in big companies and decent pay.Or else I’l just end up working in an audit firm with less pay. I seriously need your guidence. Thank You.
Hi Vicky,
If you do foundation in science at private college with plans to continue degree in pharmacy, then you have to check with the particular college if C5 in bio will be a problem even if foundation results are good. you have to get it in writing so that later you are not cheated. you can ask few colleges that offer pharmacy. best is to visit them in the campus instead of education fair, so that less crowd and you can sit down and take your time talking to them. As far as i know, some colleges require A2 in Bio, others C4 minimum. But if foundation score well, maybe can be adjusted. another option is for your to resit the Bio paper only while doing foundation. in this way, by the time you finish foundation next year, you will be getting the SPM result for Bio (hopefully an A). solves your problem.
I notice you did not take accounts in SPM. so why are you interested in it? Accounts is tough, but so is all programs. as for getting job, good results + good personality + ability to work hard will get you a good job, sooner or later. you may work in small company first, but with experience you can apply to GLCs and MNCs. in accounting line, there are many specializations. that also counts. ultimately, you can open your own accounting firm.
think about it first. accounts or pharmacy?
Dear sir,
i m vicky here,I have just finished my SPM n dnt do well in it. All are just pass and 2As. i thought of using the results to apply for private university. I scored 2A’s (M3(A1,Moral(A2)) and 7B’s(English(B4),Sejarah(B3),Physics (B4),Chemistry (B3) ,Biology(B4),Tamil (B3),and EST (B4).An unfortunately C5 In Additional Mathematics and Bahasa Melayu. Im very intrested to study for Pharmacy or Radiology. So I really hope that you could help me to find the best way to solve this problems. I have considered in taking pharmacy bt Im scared if I do not have a bright future after I finished my degree. Many people say that pharmacy is tough and only if your are lucky, you will gt decent job in big private hospitals and decent pay.Or else I’l just end up working in a goverment hospitals with less pay. I seriously need your guidence. Thank You.
vicky,
Hi,
Using SPM result to private university is not a problem. you have to do foundation programme before continuing in degree. I’m not sure about radiology degree. i know there is diploma in radiology only.
as for job prospect, pharmacy is really in demand. from what i know, government job will pay more than 3k for fresh graduates.
Thank you for your advice.I visited the multimedia university in cyberjaya & its disable friendly.I’m going to do foundation in IT.Can you please advice me on what are the specific courses in IT that will be useful in industries & which will also cater for my disabilities.
MMU is a good choice. you can talk to the lecturers/counsellors to see what the majoring and courses in IT are. I guess those involved in multimedia, web/internet, security, etc is quite good choice. IT means you can have the luxury of working from home, and since you have some disability, choosing those like Business IT may be hard because need to meet customers for user requirements.
Hi sir i just finish my spm and my result is not so good bm 4b, bi 3b, moral 7d, sj 7d, maths 7d, add maths 8e, est 5c, kimia 8e,fizik 8e, engineering tecnology 6c. I am sitting 4 the maths july paper, i also had apply 4 aircraft maintence engineering in certificate course, politeknik elektrik & elektronik certificate course. is my choice ok sir. i need your opinion sir?
hope your maths results improve. i see that your sciences and add maths results are not good, so it may be hard to get the courses you applied for. why not try business admin/hospitality since your language results are better than science/maths results? you may want to add this as one of the options in the application.
MP: edited. pls avoid publishing your hp number in the blog.
im in need of help for my daughter to get a scholarship or loan to study medicine in penang medical college. kindly call me at 012-***********. appreciate help, tq
hi,
as you may know, the list of scholarships are getting shorter because the season is ending. pls get regular updates via websites, blog, newspapers etc.
as for loan – can try PTPTN, MIED, bank loan, MCEF, etc.
i can’t be calling individuals since the main aim of this blog is to disseminate information. I suggest you refer to the contact numbers listed in the page and get in touch with them.
Thank you sir.Appreciate it.
hi , a great respect to u Mr. poobalan for u great spirits in helping youths like us.
well , i m from kuantan , pahang and just finished my spm 2008.
well with my best effort and gods blessings , i got 8 A’s ( BM , BI , MATH , ACCONTS , SEJARAH , MORAL , SAINS , EKONOMI ASAS ) and 1 B4 ( add. math ) .
well , i have just applied for matriculation and ipta courses but i m just yet not so aware of whether have to decide on taking a suitable course for me and which the course in the future can apply for a job in the goverment.
some says acconting or teaching is good .
well , i hope a good guidance from u SIR, thanks .
Nandri. The thanks should rightly go to many of my friends and contacts who take the effort to share the info. Some still remain anonymous. Our hope is that youths make use of the chances and try all possibilities.
Congrats to you on getting 8As. for suitable course – depend on your interests and results). Teaching is good option. You should apply for the overseas course (min 7As) and matriculation. competition is tough but no harm in trying. Other options are accounting, finance, HR, law – but all this is through matriculation.
As for government job, well regardless of the program, you must get good uni results – 2nd upper at least. Any degree qualification will allow you to apply for officer-level government job.
hello sir…. im living in ipoh….. where can i get the guidance and counseling n this town……….????
well, so far i have not heard of any. some private colleges/uni will hold open days and road show, but i’m sure you know they will be a bit biased in promoting their own programmes. but you can still talk to them to get some idea.
2. regardless of where you stay, use the phone and call the numbers – mic hotline, ewrf, drra etc.
ewrf, drra means….?
pls explain me… i didn understand.,,,
look at the first items in this page. DRRA Malaysia is providing counseling. so does EWRF through the C3G program (you see people talk about careers in Astro Vanavil – short clips of 2-3 mins). You can call them and ask for advice.
BTW, MIC’s Vetripadigal is doing a seminar in northern region. I updated in the blog. pls check.
Hi sir, i just finish my stpm and my results are 1b n 3c. i did in science which is in bio, chemy, maths t and peng am. i got b for peng am, c plus for math t and chemy and bio i got c. im interest to study for biomedical engineering. can i go throught on that field sir.. and do u have any idea based on my result n my future.. hope u reply me sir. thank you.
biomedical is good field. have you applied yet? pls check the cut-off marks before choosing the uni.
hello sir..
i jz fnzd my spm im a science class student.i gt 4a in bm bi mr n sj,otrs b n c except 4 phz juz paz wit 8e.my problem is i really don`t know what to do n i cant figure out my interest.i could nt ask any one else as they r scoldin n discouragin me by tellin dat i hav no ambtn n i should atleast hav anytin in my mind…im not intrstd in medical field..can u gv me sum idea
hi, sorry but i’m having slight problem understanding your short-form writing. I Hope you can write in proper/fuller english next time. Ok, let me seee if i got your message correctly:
1. you 4As, others credit, and 1 pass in physics.
2. you can’t figure out your interest and don’t know what to do
3. others are scolding you
4. you are not interested in medical field (i think you mean dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy etc)
You As are in non-science/maths subjects. So, IF you plan to do STPM – is it Ok to take science stream? STPM can give you another two years to think about your future plans.
contrary to what people say, its actually easy to know your interest – think about these – what do you ALWAYS “think about”, “talk about”, “like to hear about”. It can be one thing or more than one thing. list down all of them. it can be cooking, music, sports, reading, movies, cars, planes, gardening, crime stories, comics, shopping, teaching, computert games, writing poems, pets/animals, building designs, talking to people, travelling etc.
Secondly, think about this – what do you tend to do when you are free? When there’s no homework, no school, no housework. Nothing. what do you do (beside sleeping?)
children usually have similar traits as parents. so study your parents and see their traits. What work are they doing and are they enjoying it?
talk with your friends and relatives – ask them what they think your character is. what they say is not 100% accurate, but it will make you think – correct or not what my friends/relatives say.
you can also search online for a “personality test” or “career profile test”. this tests would help you to identify what kind of job is suitable for your character.
do a elimination process. write down areas which you are NOT interested in. Then see what’s left 🙂
If you are not sure, go to the education fairs, get to know all the courses there by talking to the counsellors.
hi~a great respect to u first…Mr.Poobalan^^ 1st of all i have 2 thx 2 u bcos of ur great spirit in provided us all the guidence in choosing the future~ i juz taking my spm result but unfortunately i didnt done well…4As n 7B…but my trial exam shows a good result…i got 9As n 2B…so i felt weird y i got tis result…all of my relative n teacher felt unbelieveable n ask me 2 check again…problem tat i face noe is i wan 2 appeal some college…wat course should i take n how can i appeal the college by my status now??
i felt nervous n uneasy…i dunno wat 2 do noe…i dunno i have 2 wait 4 the result after checking or juz taking tis unbelieveable result 2 appeal college ….can u give me some guidence??i really appreciate it….thx a lot…
firstly, get the results to be rechecked. so make the appeal.
appeal for colleges (i think you mean private colleges) is depends on the course. some colleges are strict while others are quite lenient. as long as you have money to pay, you can work your way into a course. sometimes may need to take foundations/bridging etc.
if applying for uni, you have to apply using actual results. can update later after getting the appeal results.
if for private college/uni, some will have intake in july, so you can wait first until appeal comes out. again, it depends on what course you plan to do.
what course to do – depends on you! 🙂 look at your results, and your interests.
hie sir….
i m vithya here…i have obtained 7a’s and 3b’s for my spm…i m realy very confused on which course to choose….can i know which course will be best for me based on my results????
thank you.
Hi Vithya,
the course choice depends on interest, actual results for subjects, and which place (public or private).
Vithya ur from penang is it…

1. better resit july paper for maths because you got D.
2. you have average result of at least 8 credits.
3. intakes for public uni/poli all over. you have to wait till next intake either in nov or next year.
4. you can try private colleges. course depends on your interest.
Hello sir… I wants to ask you what is the job prospects if i finishes a diploma and degree in chemical engineering…what is the salary that the employee giving for the fresh graduates??
job prospect is good. there’s job in local and overseas. of course, overseas pay will be better. salary, will be enough for a fresh graduate. gaining experience and planning career is more important than starting pay. if diploma holder get RM1-1.5k, take it. degree should be in the RM2k region. need to check with latest survey results.
sir i got 8A’s (bm addmaths maths bio phy chem est sejarah) and B3 (bi and moral). i planned to do chemical engineering, biomedical science, biotech, pharmacy.can you explain about these courses(what are the subjects being taught in that course) and job opportunities in future.
my interest is in chemistry biology and maths related subjects.is there any other courses that suit me .im still confuse sir
wow, that quite a lot of choice, all of them very good. there’s demand for these jobs in next 5 years as in now. as for the courses:
chemical engineering – the branch of engineering that is concerned with the design and construction and operation of the plants and machinery used in industrial chemical; the activity of applying chemistry to the solution of practical problems
try: http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Depts/CHE/About/definition.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_engineering
biomedical science – the application of the principles of the natural sciences to medicine
try also : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomedical_Science
biotech: Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use.
Biotechnology is often used to refer to genetic engineering technology of the 21st century, however the term encompasses a wider range and history of procedures for modifying biological organisms according to the needs of humanity, going back to the initial modifications of native plants into improved food crops through artificial selection and hybridization. Bioengineering is the science upon which all biotechnological applications are based. With the development of new approaches and modern techniques, traditional biotechnology industries are also acquiring new horizons enabling them to improve the quality of their products and increase the productivity of their systems.
read it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biotechnology
pharmacist: dealing with medication and dispensal of medication; the art and science of preparing and dispensing drugs and medicines,
read more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmacy and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmacists
there’s also job related to nutrition, other types of engineering, biochemistry, and so on.
hello sir,
i get 6a’s(add.maths,(A1) maths,(A1)bm,bi,est,moral) , 3b’s(physic(B3), chemistry(B4),sejarah(B3) and 1 C5 in biology in spm.
i’m in interested in engineering especially chemical engineering.
my parents advise me to take stpm.
what is ur opinion sir about the chemical engineering course. is the will demand in future? what is your advise for my furher studies sir?
i also applied for matriculation , ipta and teaching.
Hi,
Chemical engineering is a good field, with good future demand.
if didn’t get local IPT, then option is to study in private or take STPM to enter local uni after that.
you hv to talk to your parents on the reasons why they suggest STPM. could it be financial issue? or perhaps then want you to enter local uni which is more reputable than the local colleges?
as for advice, your chemistry got 4. so you have check if your past exams and trials also got similar results. since your maths is good, why not try actuarial science?
what is actuarial science all about sir? how is the demand? can i go after spm?
i have some financial problem to go to private uni. since my parents are not well to do unless i get some loans.
its something like statistics. mostly job is in financial institutions, insurance industry etc. read more here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actuarial_science
http://www.stat.missouri.edu/AboutUs/actuarial.html
same as other courses, you have to do foundation/matriculation/pre-u before enrolling in degree in actuarial science.
some private colleges of full/partial scholarships such as fees exemptions etc. you can also consider PTPTN loan. or enrol first, study well and apply for scholarships that come later.
hi sir….. after i din get any offer from the maktab, universiti… now i’m studying form 6.. did u have any advise on the decission that i have made…
hi,
you can consider private college or uni if can afford it (plus taking PTPTN loan). that’s the only option you have other than form 6.
good afternoon sir,
A friend of my father-in-law, who is currently a staff nurse in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) is very interested to pursue a Diploma in Counselling via outcampus since she’s currently working at the hospital. Would appreciate it very much if you could help provide the necessary details and information on how and where to go about it. Your cooperation and help is much appreciated. Thank you.
Hi,
i think you mean off-campus studies. i’m not sure which place offers it. you can try UM’s PJJ program. Can also refer with Kem Kesihatan’s HR department in case they have some details. Major off-campus studies providers include OUM and Wawasan Open Uni. Try also Unitar, MSU.
Hi mr poobalan,
My sister finish her spm 2008, she got 4A(BM A1, BI A2, Maths A2, and Sejarah A2) Credits in physics, bio, moral,EST, and pass add maths n chemistry. I already apply for teaching and UPU, but in meantime also looking for the best PVT U just incase she didt get admission at govt sector. Could you suggest me any field of studies that i can suggest to her?
Thank you in advance.
BGRDS
LATHA
well, better ask for her interest/ambition first. try not to decide for her. it can bite us in the back later.
based on her results (not sure if the credits are strong or weak for physics/bio) – why not take up language, mass comm/journalism, nursing, industrial sciences, interior design. she can still do teaching via UNITAR or UNISEL (both accepted by govt for school posting).
best is to talk to her before deciding. try also to contact the numbers listed in this page like EWRF or DRRA to get more idea.
hi mr poobalan,
Thank you very much for your info, I hv one some question, now she’s saying that wants to do STPM but dono wat paper to select so do you have any idea that i can deliver to her?
Thanks in advance
BGRDS
LATHA
Pengajian Am is compulsory. The other options depends on the package the school offers. You take minimum 4 subjects, but some students do register extra one subject and study privately.
vanakam sir.i want to know,it’s uniten is ok.i got admission form from uniten.i choose engineering of Electrical Power Engineering (Hons).May i know,if i finish graduation, will i got work?any career guided for me sir?
uniten is OK. work is available in 3 years time. just make sure you get good results, and perhaps can get a job in a top company.
hey…Hru? I thnk u remember me for asking a sily question “what public servnts wear?” haha… Anyway, i wnt to the jpa interview…was awesome…bt i hv this quea buzzing arnd my head for lk 4 months…The ques is..Jpa have 10 years of bond after graduation.. Can i do my masters during my 10 years of gov servce bond? Bcz i dun wana b a MO jz for 10 years? Man..Thats so long… Yea, thats my ques..Answer me please…No one seemd to know the answer..I know i need 3 years experience to do masters..but 10 years..??? Its way too late… I wana b a speacialst b4 i turn 35!! Hehe…i do dream big..
well, i think can continue with Masters while under bond. anyway, need to confirm this. i’ll ask around.
hi sir.. i screwed up my spm.. i din do that well in my spm.. i’m a science stream student… i’ve obtained 1 A1 for (english) n B for (mod.maths n moral), C for ( sejarah, biology, malay, est) n jus pass for chemistry, physics n add maths.. i have interest in science field but d results i obtained is not good enaf for science field.. i hope u can help me figure out the right course i should apply.. thank u very much..
well, since you have at least 5 credits (1 A, 2B and 4C), so you can enrol in diploma level programs or even foundation programs. Unfortunately, as you said, since the sciences results are pass only, so it will be quite difficult to get into science program. Your only chance is through biology which you got credit (hopefully its a strong credit). so, in this area, you have to look for biology-based sciences at diploma or foundation level. bioscience, biotechnology, medical lab technology, etc.
You also need to evaluate if your “interest in science field” is enough because your results show otherwise. you have to ask yourself if there’s any particular reason for the results being like that.
thank u very much sir… well, apart from science field.. what other course would u recommend for my results ?
well, apart from science-based courses, you can try language (english), mass communication, business administration, IT, management, maths/statistics, social science, counseling, etc.
Hello sir,
I just finished SPM and managed to score 7As-6A1s, 1A2( BM,english, maths, moral, sej, akauns, chemistry). I want to further my studies overseas but unfortunately I haven’t been shortlisted for any scholarships I’ve applied for particularly bcoz I got a C for add maths. I’ve already been accepted into MMU to study business but I’m still considering taking STPM. Do u think STPM is a good choice so that I can study overseas after I’m done? And do you have any scholarship recommendations for overseas studies?
Thanks in advance!
Well, let’s look at the facts. you got 7As but no scholarships so far. i guess studying overseas depends on getting scholarship. so, no scholarship, means no overseas? What was offered in MMU – diploma or foundation level?
STPM is of course good choice, provided you get good results – at least 2A 2B to even think of scholarships. of course better if get 3As or 4As.
Some scholarships do specify for overseas, while others are local. Just keep an eye on the scholarship page for new announcements.
Secondly, many universities offer scholarships, bursary awards, merit awards etc for students who get good results in the semester results. However, for that, you must have entered the uni, meaning must have taken foundation/a-levels/stpm and use that results to enter uni.
thanks… MMU offered foundation.
Sending behalf of my friend,
hi bro, is there any fully sponsored media related course like, mass com, music, film or animation?
my friend is from poor family, (family income around RM800 only per month)
well, try akademi seni kebangsaan. http://www.aswara.edu.my
if in private colleges/uni, it depends on results. those that offer such programs include lim kok wing, iact, kdu, utar, uitm etc. but mainly for mass comm. filming rare. music – ucsi.
these industries don’t seem to come under MLVK or kolej komuniti scope. i’m not sure about course in poli, but poli application over already.
Hello there sir. Im from J.B and currently studying at Nilai UC. I dont like the enviroment here at all. Its so far away from eveything including a place to eat or a place to get something in emergency. Im now willing to change my college to The Otomotive College which is in P.J. What do you think about the college sir? Im applying for Diploma In Automotive Engineering. And Im looking for a Scholarship if Im going to continue my studies there at T.O.C. Can you please guide me sir? Thanks in advance.
Hi,
You should have asked around or visited Nilai before committing to study there. Anyway, the place is picking up, and if you have own transport, not a big problem (of course need to have money for petrol and toll).
Otomotive College offers more of MLVK type program. Do check if the diploma is MQA recognised, because I think the college ties up with a foreign college. Scholarship, not very easy, unless you get an apprenticeschip scheme with Honda/Proton/DRB-Hicom/UMW Toyota/Perodua/Naza etc. Better you check with the college or call up all the automobile industry companies.
hye sir,
i was a ‘SPM2007’ student who managed to get
3a’s that is-BM,ENG,MATHS
4B- Islamic studies
5c-add maths
and my physics and chemistry were very bad,-7D
here comes the worst part,
i got accepted into uitm for business studies and managed to get above 3 pointers for 2 semesters, but, i failed my accounting for those two sems.
i figured out that i couldnt bare failing accounting for another semester so, so i did the craziest thing,- i quit uitm,to further my studies in mass comm.
and now that i’ve quitted uitm, i do not know which college to get into.
and my mother recommends me to take A-levels.
what do you think sir??
should i go for mass comm,or A levels??
and what do you think about me taking LAW at Brickfield’s college?
PLEASE, I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP, as this is very important for my future.
i want something that promises good job opportunites:)
please help me sir, thanks:)
hi,
since your science based subjects were not good results, i guess option is towards business/arts based programs.
i think you should have thought carefully and decided on what/where to study BEFORE quitting, but no point talking about that now.
A Levels is good option if you are undecided on what career/program to do. its like STPM and using a-levels you can then decide what to study.
Mass Comm – do you have the interest in it? are you outgoing, easy personality, good communication skills? interested in writing/video/tv/news etc?
Law – involves lots of reading and research. need to able to speak well.
again, it depends on your personality and interests. Law obviously has better opportunity after you can find a place to practise. Mass Comm – need to find a place to work, not so easy.
Whatever you study – need to be passionate and enjoying it. the good grades will come, and so does a job.
hi sir..i just finished stpm..i want do degree in creative multimedia at management and science university..most of my friend said this is not a good university and cannot get job and etc..but mqa, jps, jpa recognize most of courses in this university including multimedia… i’m very confused now..don’t what to do..so what do you think sir?..looking foward to your answer..thx
Hi,
MSU did have its share of complaints from students – bad management, etc. it was previously linked to PTPL college, but then expanded into a university section. i’ll say give it a try, but compare the syllabus with others like one academy, LKW, MMU etc.
vanakam sir, nw im doing 3rd semester in politeknik sultanah bahiyah, kulim,on diploma teknologi pembuatan(mechanical engeenering).
For next sem i must do practical in any company as requirement to diploma.but until nw i didn’t get any company to do practical…….
That’s why la wan asking your help to suggest any company that taking poly practical student
and also give ellaun in kedah.(sungai petani, gurun, kulim and alor setar). vallge indian makkel….
hi, i think kulim hi-tech park have lots of option. you have to try there. firstly, try to get a place, whether get allowance or not is secondary. not all companies may offer good allowance.
Secondly, if no choice, may have to look further to penang, perak etc.
i suggest you also ask in the forums like UMIC and MiClub in case staff from companies can help out.
hi,i currently study bioprocess eng at university malaysia perlis.but i intend to swap to ucsi to study chemical eng.coz i din that chemical eng will get high pay and good prospect than bioprocess eng.izit ,i doing de right thing?i wonder it is worth that i spend a big amount of money to study chem eng at ucsi ?(means after graduate can i earn bz de fees quikly?)if i study at private cn i be study master at public uni?
Hi David,
Currently, the job prospect is quite dynamic. Chemical engineering has more prospect than biprocess because its a generalised course, whereas as bioprocess focuses on oil and gas industry more.
As for earning salary, it depends on your grades and the quality of your education, AND the place where you are employed.
I’ll say stick with the current uni and earn good grades. That’s more important. There’s a certain standard in IPTAs which are lacking in IPTS.
Studying in IPTA is far more cheaper (about 20%) than studying in IPTS. So, you need to consider that as well.
Yes, you can study master in IPTA even if your first degree is from IPTS.
hi,i still so down n confuse which i stl cant make decison.hope u cn elaborate more
1.do u means ipta is still better than ipts?
2.but however in terms of future, chem eng or bioprocess eng will hv bright future?
3.i cn become tutor or lecturer in public uni after i get degree from preivat uni?(izzit hard to get than those who graduate frm public uni)
4ucsi is good ?
5 when i graduate frm private izzit hard to apply for become teacher i govnment school compare to those who graduate frm public uni?
6,my uniMAP is very new uni n no main campus,i wonder it is hard to get a jog?from wat i reseach is UCSI hv high standard thn uniMAP.
7.uniMAP too far frm my house,i ;ive at bentong.i not very get use .
hi again david.
1. in terms of quality of education and facilities, yes most IPTA better than IPTS. note that i say most, not ALL. the reason is simple. IPTS run a business, their focus is money. IPTA don’t run business. Their focus is not money. When the focus is money, the objectives of education can easily get side-tracked. You study hard to get A, but student never attend class also can pass (example). you pay tons of fees, but WIFI is terrible. And so on. If you go for IPTS, try those with twinning program or those that follow established overseas uni recognition.
2. i’ll say chemical eng.
3. most of the IPTA look at your first degree qualification instead of Master or PhD. So, if your first degree is first class, then you have good chance of getting job in IPTA. And, IPTA only recognise degrees that in JPA list. so, if you study a course not approved by JPA, you can’t get job in IPTA.
4. UCSI – some good, some not so good. have you visited the campus?
5. if you study in private, you can’t become govt school teacher (unless you study degree in education from 2 or 3 selected colleges like unisel or unitar).
6. well, uniMAP is new and lack facilities of course. so, i’m not sure how to compare with UCSI. i suggest you visit UCSI and compare it yourself. Remember that chem/bioprocess needs lab facilities. you have to check if its adequate at both places. note that saying got “high standards” and actually having high standards is two different things.
7. well, if distance is your excuse, then obviously UCSI is better choice. having said that, do you think staying in KL in a jam-packed area is conducive for education? if you are disciplined, then its good. if not, you can easily be side-tracked. studying in KL is tough and expensive 🙂
hmm……..i oready visited ucsi,n of coz the enviroment ,building design r seen better than unimap, but the facilties for chem/biop in unimap maybe will good a little bit coz private is not afford to buy some equiment.i dunno hw to do…i oready went through one sem at unimap, still cannot make a decision.i want to share is ,i thinking to do chem eng coz i din i easy to fng jog(can apply any jog related to chemica)and get good pay.coz i want gv my mother a very good life after i graduate.i dun want let my mon disapoited.yes i poor but,i now i manage to pay for 1st sem fees(ist sem fees hv to pay by ur own),n other pay by ptptn.i not care now i hv to spend a lot of money if i graduate will easyliy earn back n gv my mother a good n luxurius life.wat i afraid is i study bioprocess eng at unimap (of coz no ned spend much money)but after gradyate can gv m mother a house a car…wat i reseach is jog for biopr eng is very few but there is many bioprocess graduate.i dun care spend a lot now to earn better life.
i oso afraid thet i spend a big amount of money doing chem eng (but not worth)then after i graduate ,i can get a good jog morever i hv to bear a big ptptn loan
i oso afraid that yes no ned spend money n bear big ptptn loan for unimap, but the salery is so so.
izzit reaaly chemical eng is high pay jog?and good demand for future thn bioproc eng.i do alot of reseach i found tat chem eg salery is higher n in future ned a lot of chem eg.
well, as i mentioned in first reply, if you study well, then the good job will come by. chemical eng. is more general so, have wider job option than bioprocess. if you don’t mind quitting the IPTA, then you can do so and enrol in IPTS like UCSI. as for pay, if you are expect, then your salary will be better. but if you do chemical eng and work in education line, your pay won’t be high as working in the industry or companies.

thanks a lot….
Hi Hema,
Since you already gone through STPM, no point talking about choices after SPM. As for entering IPTA for medic, let’s wait for STPM results to come out. In the mean time, I see that you are able to identify few health/bio-related courses. I think you may need to sit down with parents and talk about your career. If you want to enter private colleges, still can. I suggest you go to Star Education Fair this weekend and attend ALL the relevant talks. SEarch the internet and read about the careers like geologist, pharmacist, biotech, psychology, etc. There’s also a personality test that you can undertake to identify (to certain extent) what job may suit you. Under the Guidance section of this blog, there’s contact for C3G. Call them and get their advise. There’s also DHHRA Malaysia. Their contact is at the sidebar of this blog (towards the bottom). they also offer counseling.
When you say science stuff, do you imagine yourself working in lab? or in office? or outdoors? in hospital environment? dealing with drugs or medicine? Read more on the careers. Internet has lots of info that is useful. With 6As and 4Bs, you can join many of the private colleges and probably get a bit of discount on the fees as well. try UTAR or TARC for cheaper fees.
ALOO SIR

Sir,i did Stpm …i got a B for my pengajian am,and D for Mathematics and Biology..and i failed my chemistry :((
what should i do next sir..? i need ideas…i noe its hard for me to get to local u because my cgpa is 1.35..stpm ws tough enough for me to score…i tried very hard to just pass the paper..what should i do sir…? help me…!!..i wan to continue my studies into science related field..
Hi Ariven,
Your results not so good since need 2.0 to enter IPTA. never mind, what you can do is still apply for IPTA, in case there’s any vacancies for the course you like. you also need to consider private college.
hi, mr. poobalan. I finished stpm last year, and i just got my results today. It was not very good, as i failed my maths T, got a B for pengajian am and C and C- for chemistry and biology respectively. My CGPA is 1.67. Honestly, is it still possible for me to enter IPTA? and even IPTS? If it is possible, what course might still be open to me? Or should i retake STPM again? My family is not rich, and might even have problems supporting me for IPTS, unless i get PTPTN or scholarships.. But with my result, is it still possible for me to continue studying, get PTPTN or scholarships?
Ho troubled,
honestly speaking, its not possible to enter IPTA, but hey, just give it a try…you never know.
for IPTS, still can enter foundation programs as long as you have minimum 1 principal pass and 3 spm credits. some IPTS allow for entry into degree with at least two principal passes (minimum 2 C), so you still can try since you have a B and a C. you got C for chemistry, so i’ll suggest some chemistry based courses.
Personally, I think its not worth to retake STPM.
you can get PTPTN loan as long as your course is recognised. you can double check by calling up PTPTN, refer http://www.ptptn.gov.my
@poobalan,
thank u for the advise, i have decided to give it a try for IPTA. but even if i am very lucky and get accepted, it is said that there is a very high possibility that i will get perhutanan or perikanan course, as many says. they also say that the course is not very good. is that true? i have no idea at all about anything related to those courses, so if u have any ideas can u share them with me?
Erm, so does that mean i am still elligible for IPTS? basically, i passed three subjects, a B for PA and C for chemistry, C- for biology, so can i further my education for degree? i do not wish too waste too much money and start from foundation again if i can because i will have a lot of loan to pay back after i graduate. But since my results are not very good, can i still choose the course i want in IPTS? or do they also have a minimum cgpa for the courses offered and i can only apply for the courses if i passed their criteria?
So means even if my cgpa is not very good, i can still get a ptptn no matter what? because without the ptptn loan, it would be a tough financial struggle for me to go into IPTS… i have looked over a lot of scholarships, but most of them requires an excellent academic performance.
Thank u for any help or advise!
Hi again troubled,
well, courses like perhutanan and so on have limited demands, so it would hard to get a job. students may end up working in different field, join govt service, or become entrepreneurs, or look for job in other countries as well. courses like forestry involves management and environment, you can get job with govt sector, state govts, NGOs, plantation companies, timber companies, etc.
even for IPTS, its hard to get a suitable course with cgpa 1.67 because even IPTS have to follow ministry guidelines and not simply take students. you have to ask around. i suggest you try for diploma if can’t get into degree. its just an extra year and nothing to be ashamed about. in the end, you can still join a degree program, and if you study well in diploma, can get exemption in fees. even ptptn loan is changed to scholarship if you get first class degree.
if you take foundation, PTPTN won’t cover because its one year program meant as pre-u. so, you can get PTPTN IF you fulfill the requirement for the degree/diploma AND the duration is more than one year of study. you can refer to ptptn website which have the syarat-syarat. remember, if the college seem to offer any “short-cuts”, be careful and double check with PTPTN. there are cases where PTPTN rejected loan application after some time. better to get written confirmation from colleges to be safe.
i suggest you try utar, tafe, aimst, segi, unitar, unisel, tarc, msu, ptpl, etc which may be more affordable in terms of cost.
scholarships definitely will ask for excellent academic results.
@troubled,
thanks for the advise. i am actualy considering taking linguistic or mass comm… sir, do u know any good and affordable IPTS that offers these courses?
hi troubles,
generally, affordable colleges are like UTAR, TARC, TAFE, UNISEL, UNITAR, KLIUC, UNITEN and other govt/political linked institutions. however, its common to find certain courses cheap at one place, and another course cheaper at another place. i suggest you try search at afterschool.my and studymalaysia.com websites for list of IPTS that offer such programs and then compare cost/quality.
for starters, try kdu, taylors, ucsi, help, utar, msu, unisel etc.
Yeah..sir..can i do any science courses..?
im planning to do medical lab technology in private college..can i proceed with that result..?
Honestly,im not hoping for ipta because of my poor results..
sorry sir..i couldnt reply from my post..my browser problem..
dear sir,
i just got my stpm result.. i get a for chemistry, physic and maths and a b+ for pengajian am..
i plan to go into engineering.. which engineering has a better future and which local uni is better?? thanks for the advice.
Hi Jun,
congrats on your results. the popular engineering courses are chemical, electrical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical etc. in terms of local uni, ratings indicate um, usm, utm, ukm, upm as the better ones.
@poobalan,
erm may i noe wad is d field of study in mechanical engineering and in electrical engineering.. which 1 is better?? i heard that many electrical factory is decreasing the number or worker in their factory..
Hi Jun,
mechanical engineering mostly involve work in production line (factories), mechanical areas and also have specialization into automotive, aeronautical, marine, etc. Electrical is more on electrical based industry – power plants, factories, etc. there are many industries that employ both mechanical and electrical graduates. nowadays, the global environment means you not necessarily looking at working in malaysia. many companies hire malaysians in malaysia, but they are posted overseas or travel around frequently. regardless of the factories being relocated, getting employed in a good company is important.
@Jun,
thx sir. how about mechatronik? it is good to study it? its field of study involve mechanical and electronik, is it harder to study?
wad are d future of this course??
Hi Jun,
read about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechatronics_engineering
its a good field, not easy to get in as well.
as with all engineering courses, its not easy to study. whatever you study, need to work hard to get good results.
Yeah..sir..can i do any science courses..?
Hi sir,im Ariven.i sen a post yesterday with my stpm result-cgpa 1.35..im planning to do medical lab technology in private college..can i proceed with that result..?
Honestly,im not hoping for ipta because of my poor results.
-i sen a post yesterday but couldnt reply from there..ssorry sir..
Hi Ariven,
since your cgpa is below 2.0, i think its difficult to proceed to degree program even in IPTS. You have to do diploma or foundation first, based on SPM results.
So, in short, i think you can’t use the STPM results. but, to be safe, do check with the colleges/uni you are interested in, maybe they can offer some exemptions or advice.
sir, does that mean i have to start from the beginning sir..?.i mean from a diploma course..?
Ariven,
yes, i afraid so. don’t think of it as a step backwards or anything. its just a small hurdle or another route.
sir,m jz fnis my stpm…i got 2 principal in biology n chemistry…i know that m cnx apply 4 ipta…so,i apply in unisel n utar…tey asking min entry requirements of 2 principal in biology n chemistry to do degree in biotechnology…i apply tat sir…cn i get a place to study there ah sir??
hi mages,
you managed to get 2 principal, so that’s the minimum requirement. since you are going for IPTS and already applied, just check with them 🙂 i think won’t be a problem, but you have to study harder. stpm was cheap, but IPTS is your money, can’t afford to play-play!
hello sir i just got my stpm results.i obtained 1A and 3B for my stpm.A for my economy and B for my bm,pa, and pengajian perniagaan.since i have obtained an A for my economy, i would like to choose this course. Is it ok if i only select the same course but for different universities as my options. My cgpa is 3.25.
Hi Lavaneya,
your CGPA, 3.25, may not be enough for getting a place in UM. I’ll suggest you check out the guide on cut-off marks and apply accordingly. Yes, you can apply same course but in different uni, no problem.
@lavaneya, Not a problem. Since your Econ looks good y not try Economy in UPM and UMT
Dear Mr.Poobalan,
I am a degree holder from IPTA graduated last year, I intend to apply DPLI in Tesl. Basically I have fulfilled the requirement needed above average yet I am worried whether I will be accepted or not even for the Medsi Test. Can you help me to sort out my problem, thank you
Hi Prakash,
there’s nothing much to do but to wait for the interview call. if you are shortlisted based on the requirements, you will be called for MedSi test. Tips on Medsi is available on the internet, you can get some idea from searching via google.
Sir, I realy need ur help…. I just finishd my stpm n i did vry bad… my cgpa is just 1.5… n for sure it will b very hard to get into local U.. so i plan to go to cllge.. I jus wan to make sure wat i’ll b doin if i enter cllge wit my stpm reslt.. I will b taking foundation n thn degree or diploma? After faundation then degree???????? i rly need ur help.. im blank rite nw.. im intersted in Biomedic and other courses that involves Bio! Need ur help….. 🙁
hi poo,
if your CGPA is 1.5, meaning you don’t have enough passes (at least C). you’ll need 2 or 3 Cs minimum even in IPTS. I’m not sure which colleges can accept STPM students with 1 pass only, so you have to really ask around. Try unitar, unisel, masterskill, utar, segi, mahsa.
assuming your STPM results are not accepted, you have to use SPM results. you have two options:
1. if you have 5 credits in SPM, you can go for foundation and then continue to degree (it will be 5++ years in total).
2. if you have 3 credits in SPM, you have to take diploma and then continue to degree (it will be 5-6++ years in total)
sir i gt band 3 in muet n can u pls explain in further wt u mean by tessol
Hi Zack,
from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_as_a_foreign_or_second_language
its similar to TESL. I think there are some college/uni which offer this course.
Hello Sir,
I’m a post STPM 2009 leaver. I’ve only managed an A for PA, A- Maths T, B+ BIo and B for Chem. I’m kinda dissapointed.
I’ve always wanted to do either biotech or pharmacy in ipta. I’ve been told that pharmacy is almost a no no as its too competitive. What are my chances ? Any advice? Thanks.
Hi Arthur,
your CGPA is 3.5 which is still good. Pharmacy is most likely out of reach, but can still try biotech or the other programs under health sciences. check stpmindians.blogspot.com for cut-off marks which fit your results. you can consider UMS, Unimas, and UPM to lesser extent.
hi sir, i would like to know about the education fair that will be held in ipoh town hall on the 11th and 12th of march 2010. thank you..
which fair is that?
if can go for Facon this weekend in KLCC.
hi sir..i really need ur help. i finished my SPM in 2008. i got 3 A2(BM,Pendidikan Moral, BI), 2 B4 (Sejarah, Modern Maths), 1 5C( EST), 3 D7 (physic, chemistry, biology) and 1 E8 (add maths). i got a very bad result and this make me feel confused about what course should i choose according with my results. currently i studying professional diploma in hospitality management. i wondering can i do degree after this course.. or should i try a good course with my result. i really hope that i can get a feedback from u sir. thank you.
hi christina,
if you are interested in hospitality management, then just continue with that. why worry by looking back at the past. the best place to check on continuing degree is your own college. they would be able to provide a plan for students to continue – maybe degree in management, tourism, hospitality etc.
UNLESS, if you have any other interests, then maybe you want to consider changing courses.
hello sir how are u? I just finishd my stpm last year. i got for my pengajian am:c+(2.33),bm:b(3.00),pengajian perniagaan(2.00)and i failed in economy paper …and planing to degree..can i go for unimas?im also not gud in maths..wat course should i go?i really want to continue my degree.but i dono which course is suitable for me.. pls advice.thank you.
Hi Ishvin,
you CGPA is 1.8 meaning can’t apply place in uni. your options now is as i mentioned in the Basic Steps above – do foundation or diploma using your SPM results. you can try apply for politeknik which opened for application too.
