Yup, you read it right. The Indian community are questioning why the Penang state government is not allocating any funds to the Penang Chinese Town Hall for the Chinese New Year celebration this year. This was the report in TV3 at 8.27pm just now! There were 3 or 4 interviews with some Indian fellas. The first guy (PIBG rep of some Tamil school) seemed to be reading from a paper.

Its good that our community is concerned about Chinese New Year. This is the spirit we should have – concern for other Malaysians.

Happy Ponggal to beloved readers.  I Wish your lives overflow with joy, happiness, wealth an inner peace.  May the year ahead be a prosperous and fruitful one for you and your loved ones.

Ponggalo Ponggal! Ponggalo Ponggal! Ponggalo Ponggal!

I had a tiring time cleaning up the house yesterday evening. Few of my friendly neighbors dropped by for a chat, so that delayed the chores.  Managed to buy sugar cane at RM6 a piece. Got the time tied up nicely.

But, unfortunately, woke up late today, so have to skip the ponggal part. Rescheduled for evening. Will post photos later.

Got a reply on my earlier post – How grand is Ponggal this year. The national ponggal celebration will be held tomorrow at Menara KL at 10am. Putera MIC is supporting the event.

Last year, we had the International Ponggal Festival at KL Tower organised by Putera MIC and attended by Samy Vellu. There was also Ponggal celebrations at Bukit Bintang, attended by PM Badawi.

How would it be this year since its not an election year?

Just two more days and I don’t hear any advertisements on national Ponggal celebrations. Anyone with more details?

push for Thaipusam holiday in Kedah

If I remember correctly, the previous state government said that it will look into declaring Thaipusam holiday for Kedah since last year’s request was too close to the festival. Alas, those folks lost the elections.

This time around the PAS-led state government has to satisfy the hunger of the Hindu community. Can they push for holiday for Thaipusam? Will it be considered as anti-Islamic to support a holiday for a kafir religion?

Strangely enough, the call to make Thaipusam a holiday comes from the non-PAS EXCO. who says he has discussed with the Menteri Besar:

The Indian community here has asked the state to declare Thaipusam a public holiday in line with most other states which have already done so.

In making the appeal, Kedah state executive councillor V. Arumugam said he would seek an audience with Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah to get his approval for the public holiday.

He said he had earlier discussed the matter with Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak .

Thaipusam falls on Feb 8 this year and is a public holiday in Selangor, Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Johor.

Which brings us to the next question – What about Malacca? Is MIC trying again this year?
