Padang Jawa temple to be rebuilt

Remember this temple?

The controversial Sri Maha Temple in Kampung Rimba Jaya, Padang Jawa which was demolished in November 2007 is set to be rebuilt on 15,000 sq feet of land near the Keretapi Tanah Melayu quarters.

seri maha mariamman temple replacement land pronouncement 210910 01The groundbreaking ceremony took place today at the site in Padang Jawa and was attended by Selangor state excos, community leaders and the Indian settlers from the former Kampung Rimba Jaya.

The temple was ordered to be torn down by the authorities as it stood in the vicinity of the Rimba Jaya squatter settlement. Its controversial demolition by the state government in 2007 had led to many Indians turning their backs on BN.

The Hindu groundbreaking ceremony started at 9.00am with bricks coupled with religious paraphernalia arranged in a four foot-deep hole, which will sit right below the main altar of the soon to be built temple.

Land ceded by developer

According to the Selangor State Health, Plantation Workers, Poverty and Caring Government Committee Chairman, Dr A Xavier Jayakumar, the land was donated by the developer, Ken Rimba Jaya.


“The land was given to state government, and was ceded by the developer. Then we, the state government will decide, whom, and how much of the land will be given,” said Xavier (left) when queried on how the land was allocated to this temple.

He also said that all the land for places of worship in Selangor is gazetted under the state secretary.

Xavier also announced that RM300,000 had been allocated by the Selangor state government for the building fund and the land will be managed by the temple association.

Xavier the ‘temple saviour’

The temple committee and community leaders in Padang Jawa honoured Xavier with garlands and gave him the title “temple saviour”.

According to the temple committee chairperson, Madhu Manogaran, the Selangor state government and Xavier has worked tirelessly to help save temples in Selangor.

“We are very grateful to the state government, Tan Sri Khalid and Xavier for helping us to rebuild this temple, which means a lot to us,” said Madhu during his speech.

Xavier also said that the state government had managed to help around 70 temples by giving them land.

“We are prepared to do more for the Indian community, last year we spent RM2.5 million for Hindu places of worship,” said Xavier in his speech.


The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, along with the squatter settlement of Rimba Jaya, was demolished in 2007 by the then BN-led state government as part of its Zero Squatter programme.

The demolition of the temple led to a massive protest by Indian groups and helped trigger the historic Hindraf rally on Nov 25 that year.

Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia (KPM) ingin mengucapkan terima kasih dan merujuk kepada Laporan Akhbar dalam ruangan Berita akhbar MALAYSIA NANBANbertarikh 17 Februari 2011 – Ibubapa dan pihak sekolah mahu bangunan baru di SJK (T) Tapah.
Untuk makluman, projek SJK (T) Tapah telah pun diserahkan kepada Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) selaku Agensi Pelaksana dengan kaedah Rundingan Terus secara pakej bersama dengan SJKT Bagan Serai.

Namun demikian, disebabkan kekangan peruntukan semua projek-projek JKR yang sedang dalam proses tawaran terpaksa ditangguhkan sehingga mendapat kelulusan Kementerian Kewangan.

Setelah mendapat kelulusan Kementerian Kerja Raya Malaysia (KKM), KPM telah mengeluarkan surat kelulusan meneruskan projek kepada JKR tetapi JKR memaklumkan bahawa kontraktor yang dilantik mempunyai rekod yang tidak baik (syarikat ditamatkan bagi projek JKR yang lain/projek bermasalah) dan JKR mengambil keputusan untuk melaksanakan projek secara tender terbuka seterusnya membatalkan projek secara runding terus setelah mendapat kelulusan daripada KKM.

Kementerian akan meneruskan projek ini di bawah RMK-10 (1st Rolling Plan) dan surat kelulusan kepada JKR telahpun dikeluarkan pada 28 Februari 2011. Pembinaan SJK (T) Tapah akan dilaksanakan sebaik sahaja semua urusan berkaitan dengan proses tender selesai.

Bhavya Vel and Ronald McDonald help Razif

The smile has returned to nine-year-old Razif Azami, who was born with a cleft palate – thanks to the efforts of an enterprising young girl.

Bhavya Vel Vell Paari managed to raise almost RM5,000 from selling brownies and cupcakes to enable Razif to undergo corrective surgery.

She donated the money to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Malaysia, who in turn sponsored Razif’s surgery at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Her efforts got the attention of several companies, which also sent donations to RMHC on her behalf.

“I love baking and I’m happy that it could help a good cause,” said Bhavya, a Year Six pupil at Alice Smith School, who had undergone cleft lip corrective surgery herself.

“When I had to choose a cause for my school’s community service project, I picked RMHC’s Gift of Smile programme as it was something close to my heart.”

Gift of Smile is a programme run by the RMHC to raise funds for children under 18 years with a cleft lip or palate, and whose families cannot afford to send them for surgery.

RMHC officer Algene Tan said such surgeries cost around RM5,000 and children would require several surgeries to fix their cleft.

“Unfortunately, the procedure is too expensive for many parents,” she added.

Since the programme began in 2004, Gift of Smile has sponsored 498 operations, which cost nearly RM2mil.

Oddly, while funding for the project continues to increase, not many parents have applied for sponsorship for their children, Tan said.

“It could be due to lack of awareness.

“There are also many families who either don’t want to, or can’t afford to come to Kuala Lumpur,” said Tan, adding that RMHC’s funds also covered travel and lodging expenses for families outside the Klang Valley.

She added RMHC welcomes more families seeking sponsorship for surgeries for their children with similar conditions.

RM561k for temples and NGOs in Kedah and Penang

Not bad, RM561k for 46 entities. Equals RM12,196 per entity.  At least better than nothing. Still got nearly RM4.5 million, but I think its for whole country, not only Penang/Kedah.

 

THE Federal Government has allocated RM561,000 to 36 Hindu temples and 10 Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Kedah and Penang.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the allocation was part of the RM5mil which was requested by the MIC for temples and NGOs to carry out their religious and community activities for the year.

“The money can be used for the renovation of premises and to buy temple utensils,” he said after presenting the grants to representatives of 11 temples in Penang, 26 temples in Kedah and five NGOs from each state at the Penang Golf Resort in Bertam, Kepala Batas recently.

Also present were Penang MIC chief Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah, Kedah MIC chief S. Ananthan and the MIC division chiefs from the two states.

Subramaniam, advised the representatives to serve the community diligently.

He said the party would receive the balance of the RM5mil allocation later.

SJKT Seaport relocation

This time, the state government managed to fulfill something. The previous state government offered only 1 acre (0.4ha) but the current government managed to increase it to 0.6ha (1.5 acre) and also increase the classes from 10 to 18.

This was the school that was among the contentious issues during GE2008. Read about the protest of the parents here. Khir Toyo and Samy Vellu were booed.

AFTER much controversy, the Seaport Tamil school in SS7, Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya, will be relocated to Kampung Lindungan after the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) agreed to the new site.

In 2008, parents and the community in the area had protested against the relocation of the school to a 0.4ha site.

During a recent meeting with the PTA members, Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the Selangor government had in December last year approved a 0.6ha site in Kampung Lindungan for the school.

The school now sits on a temporary site owned by PKNS.

“After the approval, Petaling district officer Datuk Zulkepli Ahamd had called for a meeting in January between all relevant government agencies that I attended with (Selangor executive councillor) Dr Xavier Jayakumar.

“During the meeting, we were told that the PKNS have already contributed RM1.2mil towards the building of the school and the plans for the 18-class school have been approved,” he said.

He hoped that the school would be built soon so that the residents from Kg Lindungan, Desa Mentari, Desaria and Dato’ Hormat would be able to send their children to a school with better facilities.
