KUALA LUMPUR: Preserving our culture along with buildings that represent Malaysian heritage is imperative in symbolising racial integration.
With this in mind Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim presented a cheque for RM500,000 to Chinese Assembly Hall president Datuk Bong Hon Liong towards the conservation of the building.

He said if a building had been registered as a national heritage, the government would step in and play a hand at conservation efforts.

“The ministry will help conservation efforts because it aids in cultural development and the government does not discriminate.”

He added that the ministry had been involved in many conservation efforts.
The Chinese Assembly Hall was constructed in 1910 and completed in 1923.

The building was constructed for the purposes of Chinese welfare but holds historical significance as the “Parti Perikatan” was formed at the hall.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry has allocated RM500,000 for restoration work on the 85-year-old Chinese Assembly Hall here.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the allocation showed the Government’s commitment towards the conservation of the historical building, to restore its artistic values and allow it to resume its original function as a theatrical hall.

Cultural development: Dr Rais presenting the RM500,000 cheque for the restoration of the hall to Bong yesterday.
“It shows that the Barisan Nasional Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, is sensitive towards cultural development and that he does not favour any particular community,” he said at the cheque-presentation ceremony here yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall president Datuk Bong Hon Liong said conservation work on the hall, which was built in 1923, would start after next Thursday.
