RM430 millions for Indians an insult

Ok, I’m sure many of us have seen Samy Vellu brandishing giving out large numbers rather excitedly on TV. Let’s summarise them numbers:

300M – AIMST (last few years)

almost 100M – allocated in 9th MP for rebuilding fully-aided and partially-aided tamil schools, 30 million released already.

8M – TAFE college (which TV3 pronounced as “Ta-phe”)

1M annually – temples (since when? 1957, 1963, 1981, 2002, or 2007?)

4M – from EPU

5.4M – YSS (2004-2007)

3M – from Finance Ministry

5M – for skills training

300 + almost 100 + 8 + 1 + 4 + 5.4 + 3 + 5 = almost 426M

If we take RM1million for temples is given since 2004 (just for calculation sake)

300 + almost 100 + 8 + 3 (1M x 3 years) + 4 + 5.4 + 3 + 5 = almost 428.4M

So, its between 426 and 428.4M. That seems a lot for sole benefit of just 1.8 million Indians, a GRAND ratio of RM238 for each Indian. Super! Well done MIC! If we are to remove AIMST and TAFE which have a multiracial intake (and which MIC claims to be pride for all Malaysians), that leaves us with:

(428.4 – 308) = RM120.40M

120.40/1.8 million = RM66.89 per Indian in last 3 years! divide by the three years, and voila, you get almost RM22.30 per person. Please bow to MIC for making sure each Indian managed to get RM22.30 from the government to uplift the community!

Next, to put these values into perspective, let’s see NST report which quote Khaled Nordin:

In four short years the Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development Ministry has produced 130,000 Bumiputera entrepreneurs who are involved in all kinds of businesses all over the country, said Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He said his ministry, via the various agencies under it, including Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), had issued RM18 billion worth of loans to these entrepreneurs. “The ministry had also attracted 1.1 million people to attend the courses it offered, including those which covered the small and medium scale and service industries.

When we see these mind-boggling numbers by the ECD Minister, it seems to put into perspective the amount given by Samy Vellu.

Let’s take RM18billion and divide by 15.6 million Malays. You get RM1153.85 per person. Divide it by 4 years = 1153.85/4 = RM288.46 per person per year. And bear in mind this does not include help in education, mosques/surau, religious activities, religious schools, UITM, MARA colleges, etc.

Now, you can compare the numbers yourself and see the amount of investment done in Malaysian Indian human capital. This is where we stand. Are we still fourth class citizen or slipped further down?

ELECTON 2008:Samy Vellu details list of Gov’t aid provided to Indians

KUALA LUMPUR, SUN:

MIC President Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu today unveiled a host of statistics on various affirmative action plans in financial aid and other assistance provided to the Indian community to counter allegations by opposition groups that the community had been neglected by the government.
In a blow-by-blow account of the various aid programmes to produce better trained and skilled Indians for the job market, he said the government had provided a grant of RM300 million over the last few years to build the MIC-run Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) University in Kedah.

Almost RM100 million was allocated under the Ninth Malaysia Plan to assist in the rebuilding of fully-aided and partially-aided Tamil schools, of which RM30 million were approved recently, he said.

“The government also gave us an initial grant of RM8 million to build the TAFE College in Seremban, which has to-date produced 44,000 para-professionals,” he said in a statement to refute allegations that the government did nothing or little to help the Indian community.

The Opposition, he said, has spread “lies after lies” to win the election.
“They (the opposition) tell the people that this Barisan Nasional government does not help Indians. They are the greatest liars.” Samy Vellu said the federal government also allocated RM1 million annually for the building of temples besides apart from providing land for their establishment.

“For the first time, Indian students were allowed into Giat Mara centres to pursue their education,” he said, adding that over 1,000 Indians had benefitted from this move.

He said the government also provided places for high achieving Indian youths at Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM).

“These institutions were traditionally accessible to only Bumiputera youths. However, through the efforts of MIC, Indian youths have begun to have access these resources now,” he said.

Samy Vellu also said that Indians youths received a special allocation of RM4 million through the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department in 2007 of which RM1 million was allocated to 200 Indians from urban poor families who could not secure a place for in an existing skills training institute.

The remaining RM3 million had been used as a revolving micro loan fund with Yayasan Tekun, he said.

He said the government also allocated RM5.4 million to the MIC-run Social Strategic Foundation to undertake social programmes between 2004 and 2008.

Under the 2008 Budget, the Finance Ministry allocated RM3 million for micro loans of RM3,000 each through Amanah Ikthiar Malaysia for 1,000 Indians who are undertaking or interested to undertake micro businesses.

The government also allocated RM5 million to enable 1,000 Indian youths who had failed their PMR or SPM examinations to enrol themselves in skills training courses plus residential facilities and pocket allowance through Giat Mara, INPENS International College in Pulau Indah and other state-run skills training institutes.

“I want to ask the opposition:tell me what are your plans for the Indians and what have you done for them”

Sammy Vellu said all the Opposition was interested in was to attack and belittle the BN government.

“They (opposition parties) have no (concrete) plans to help the Indians,” he stressed.

Samy: Govt has given Indians RM430 mil

IPOH: The government has provided RM430 mil to help the development of the Indian community between 2001 and 2010, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said here.

He said the government had provided a grant of RM300mil to assist in the construction of the MIC-run Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) University in Kedah.

“They had allocated RM100mil under the Ninth Malaysia Plan to assist in the rebuilding of fully-aided and partially-aided Tamil schools, of which RM30mil was approved recently,” he told reporters here Sunday.

He also released pamphlets on MIC’s contributions and commitment to the country and community, Tamil school development and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak speech at a recent MIC convention, which would be distributed in all the MIC constituencies.

Commenting on opposition allegations that the government had done nothing or little to help the Indian community, Samy Vellu said there was no truth in the allegations.

“The opposition are only good at spreading lies after lies. They tell the people that this Barisan government does not help the Indians. They are the greatest liars,” he said.

He said the government had also provided scholarships for Indians to pursue their studies overseas as well as to give loans under the Higher Education Loan Fund.

Samy Vellu said the party-owned Tafe College had received an initial grant of RM8mil and had to date produced 44,000 semi-professionals.

He said the government had also allocated RM1mil annually for temples, apart from providing lands.

For the first time also, he added, Indian students were allowed into Giat Mara centres to pursue their education.

He said the government also provided places for high achieving Indian youths at Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM), which was traditionally accessible to Bumiputra youths only. He said the Finance Ministry had allocated RM3 mil for micro loans for 1,000 Indians who are undertaking or interested to undertake micro businesses while another RM5 mil was allocated by the government for youths to enrol in skills training courses.

Samy Vellu called on the opposition to tell what were their plans for the Indians and what they had done for them.

Samy Velu goes overdrive when churning out outrageous facts and figures. He is not only giving our grand spin doctor (the Information/Disinformation Minister) a run for his money but even surpassing his great leader, chief imam of Islam Hadhari.

He was in denial mode. When reality finally drove home the message that he is not wanted anymore, he has started spewing more lies. The sad part is that he has started believing his own lies.

He had declared that he was invincible in Sungai Siput and is indispensible to the Indian community. Won’t be surprised if he believes in his immortality. All latent signs of schizophrenia coming to the fore.

Going at this rate he might as well book a cell or make an appointment with Dr.Mahadevan.

Dear Pooabalan

Your calculation and logic makes no sense at all. Please maintain a sense of fairplay and commonsense in making such baseless accusations.

Both TAFE college and AIMST belongs to MIC (hence Indians). If we Indians claim that these contributions don’t count then would you say that the govt better off not contributing to these instituitions ?

Secondly, these aids are not the total amount provided to the Indian community. I think Samy did provide the $$ given to Tamil schools and other aids in another news release.

Also please bear in mind that there are no Malay schools but national schools. As such aid provided are for all races. The same goes for all public services and projects. All races benefit from this.

Well, you had quoted Rm18B and 1.1M people, which I think certainly wrong. But the you had failed to highlight the point that these were loans and not aid. Bro, there is a big difference between these two.

You see, first you guys claimed MIC did nothing. And when confronted by facts you nit-pick and claim the other guy gets more.

Hi Killer,

What proof is there that TAFE and AIMST belong to MIC? are they registered to companies that belongs to MIC? what legal documents bind the institutions to MIC? I’m not an expert in corporate structuring, so hope you can shed some light. i don’t want to imagine a scenario were 5 years down the road, AIMST belonging to individuals or companies that deny any relationship to MIC or the indian community.

BTW, do you know the percentage of student in AIMST by race? let’s compare that with UTAR/TARC and UITM percentages (if can get these values)

Actually, these aids ARE the total amount provided within the last few years (seems like from 2004), unless of course Dato Seri got his numbers mixed up. The $$ given earlier are all part of the allocation in 9MP – just released earlier. Maybe the only extra is Rm2 million by selangor govt.

Yes, i agree that no such thing as malay schools. why don’t we compare with agama schools then?

The 18B and 1.1M are not wrong as you think. the article above has the link to article in NST. Maybe can email Khaled and ask his clarification. Loans, yes. which take ages to collect and in some cases can be “forgotten”. anyway, lets take it as it is – 18B of loans. How much loans indians get? 1B?

agreed MIC have done things, i know that, and many other know it too – but it is definitely not enough and not up to its full capabilities, that’s the feeling. When we get the figures like what samy vellu presented, then we can analyse. then we see what MIC replies.

before this, our parents and even we just take MIC’s words. there’s no way to check. MIC must publish its achievements so that people can ask/ridicule/condemn/comment on it. MIC then should engage this and provide clarification or make corrections/improvements. if this also cannot….i don’t know what to say.

Dear Killer

I think you are smarter than asking me in providing the proof that AIMST belongs to MIC. You might not be an expert in Corporate affairs but analyzing companies is part of what I do in my daily job. But you don’t have to be an expert to know AIMST belongs to MIC, just surf the web and read the AIMST’s website. If you want further confirmation please by all means read any annual report by MIED. But if you had been reading news you can’t miss the fact that SV had been going around for years to build this place.

As for the racial breakdown, come on lah…I don’t work for AIMST but I am sure if you them they will provide. The point is AIMST is a place Indians are given priority just like in TAFE. But you cannot have 90 to 100% Indians as it would end up damaging the Univ’s reputation. We must also take excellent students from other races to increase the competition, standard of education and achievements and also have a multiracial profile (we are in Malaysia and not in India remember !).

Unfortunately we are not TAR college as the grads are even rated higher than public U grad by the local Chinese community. I know this for a fact as I had been paid lower than a Diploma holder in one MNC when I was just starting off. When I confronted the HR Mgr the guy gave illogical answers. I any case I did not let the matter go and I had made sure that justice was done (it is a long story but of course I used the legal means).

The reputation of TAFE colleague grads is a good example on why we must ensure AIMST attracts the best while keep its social obligations of helping Indians. This another example that Indians cannot keep depending and hoping for special rights as such things will only backfire.

As for the NST news you had produced is almost certainly wrong based on common sense. I guess the reporter got her/his numbers mixed up. That figure of Rm18B is simply far too high to be allocated for bumi entreprenuers. I think about Rm3B was allocated for all loans for all entreprenuers under the 9th Malaysia Plan (I have my date kept somewhere, need to look for it but you can check that too). And while bumis get a bulk of this, the others are also given loans under numerous schemes and I know some Indians who did get as well.

As for data provided by MIC, I agree we don’t have independent means to verify it. But it you can always check the allocated funds and data from various reports such as budget, 9th MP, Mid-term review, OPP,etc. The problem is people just like to criticize without checking the facts.

You say MIC didn’t do enough. But what is enough ? What do you know about Indian community ? From HINDRAF/Makkal Samadhi’s VCDs and ceramahs ?

I am telling you as an Indian who had raised from estate to my current psoition. I have done social work for Indians all my life even during my school days. I travel around the world so much for work that i need to renew my passport every year as the pages run out. I have seen the world and I believe I can make a fair judgement.

You see the contribution of MIC is very clear. When we first came to Malaysia most of us were laborers and dirt poor. Today our income is much more than the Malays (I can supply the data if you want) and we are 2nd only to Chinese. The opportunity provided by BN/MIC had turned many estate boys and girls (like me) to grads and now succesful people who escaped povetry and hardship in just 1 generation. That you are debating with me is a proof that the progress we made. No doubt we have barriers but these do not block you and me from being successful. Discrimination is everywhere even in the US and in many places it is far worse. Do you think it is good in India ? As someone who lived in India, I know there are so many barriers like color, caste, connections, etc that you will be gald that you were not born there.

The actual problem with our community is the bottom 30% of the population who needs help. If you study MIC’s recommendations in 2006 they had done an excellent work in identifying and providing solutions for 9MP. The govt in most part agreed to almost all MIC’s requests. Most of these actions are being implemented.

You must understand that MIC needs people like you and me to help them to aid the bottom 30%. But where are these Indians when MIC ask them to help ?

Finally we need to help ourselves rather than only expect the govt/BN to assist. The Chinese progressed because they pooled their resources and helped among themselves. And not waiting for a hand-out.
