IPOH: The opposition looks set to form the state government in Perak as the Barisan Nasional suffered shock losses, including MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu in Sungai Siput and PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas in Taiping. At press time, unofficial reports showed that the opposition won 30 state seats compared to the coalition’s 29. There are 59 state seats in Perak.

Samy Vellu was reported to have lost his parlimentary seat to Dr D. Jeyakumar by a majority of 1,821 votes, while Kayveas was defeated by DAP’s Nga Kor Ming by 11,298 votes.

Umno suffered several major setbacks in the party’s traditional strongholds, while most MCA, MIC, PPP and Gerakan candidates were defeated by DAP candidates.

It was a repeat of the 2004 nightmare for MCA as the party failed to wrest the Ipoh Barat parliamentary seat and lost several state seats. In 2004, the Ipoh Barat, Ipoh Timor and Batu Gajah parliamentary seats and the Pasir Pinji, Jelapang, Menglembu, Pantai Remis, Keranji and Sitiawan state seats went to DAP.

At press time, MCA candidates were said to be hard hit in several urban Chinese-dominated seats. MCA lost the Kepayang, Ber-cham, Buntong, Tebing Tinggi and Pasir Pinji state seats to DAP. The party was said to have also lost the Pokok Assam state seat. It won four parliamentary and 10 state seats in the 2004 elections.

For the Gerakan, its biggest single casualty was state chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn who was defeated by DAP’s Ngeh Koo Ham in Beruas by 1, 500 votes. The party’s youth chief Datuk Mah Siew Keong was reported to have lost to DAP candidate M. Manogaran in the fight for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat. As expected, the MIC candidate for Pasir Panjang, Datuk Dr S. Vasan, lost to Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin of PAS.

DAP has strengthened its position in Perak from the previous three parliamentary and seven state seats to six and 12 respectively.

As for Umno, the feeling on the ground is that most of its candidates will make it, albeit with reduced majorities. In 2004, Umno won in all the 34 state seats it contested. Overall, the coalition won 52 out of 59 state seats and 21 out of 24 parliamentary seats. At press time, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali was yet to address the large crowd gathered at his official residence.
