New Selangor MB Khalid is making wrong assumption that money can buy anything. Same mistake that the elections candidates from ruling government did, promising more allocations, funds etc. for the marginalised communities…but still got a firm kick in the posterior. The most important factor is the sense of belonginess, feeling of being treated equally and not like 4th class citizens. If that can be guaranteed, obviously the ability to earn, buying a property and having a say in the running of the country will follow suit. Money and income will only be a short term remedy. When people earn enough, they will start to ask – why I can’t do this? Why am I not treated the same? I also pay tax, but can’t do this and that? etc…. So, marginalisation is not about having income only. It can fulfill the lower needs of Maslow’s Hierarchy, but to attain the higher needs, the people need recognition.
Q: How would you ensure all Malaysians in Selangor don’t feel marginalised? – Lui Kwee Hui (Kuala Lumpur)
Khalid: If everyone is given a chance to enhance their income and get a decent job, I think that will reduce everything else because they will be quite happy to go on with their lives. But still I must say that there are areas, unless you put in certain real support, they will not get out of this vicious circle (or poverty).
So we have to target the areas that need to be lifted. I have not identified them, but once we have, we will support them. But the big issue is basically in the rural areas, they have no opportunity to enhance their income. We must make sure that everyone in the family is fully employed.
