Brothers get their MyKad

KUALA LUMPUR: A “technical error” resulted in two brothers facing a nine-year struggle to get their MyKad.  The ordeal began in 1999 for S. Om Nyananantha, 22, and Om Paramjothi Kumarasamy, 21, when they went together to the National Registration Department in Petaling Jaya to apply for their identity cards.

The applications by the two brothers from Batang Kali, Selangor, were rejected after the NRD became suspicious about their background.

Doubts were raised over whether they were indeed Malaysians born to K. Subramaniam and M. Maliga as their birth certificates stated that they were born one month apart in the same year.  It was then that the brothers realised that a mistake had been made on Om Paramjothi’s birth certificate. He was born on Feb 22, 1986, but it was stated as Feb 22, 1987 on the birth certificate.  Om Nyananantha was born on March 25, 1986.

Their mother Maliga, an illiterate, was not aware of the mistake.

The brothers subsequently dropped out of school and worked as a mechanic and car park attendant as they could not further their studies and could not secure better jobs without their MyKad.

A family friend, M. Madurai, 58, who came to know of their plight, decided to help them get their MyKad.  Madurai, an insurance agent, said he was appalled at the lack of interest shown by the NRD officers to resolve the matter.

He then approached MIC Youth Social and Welfare bureau chief T. Mohan two years ago. The brothers finally obtained their MyKad last week.  Mohan yesterday thanked Madurai who took the trouble to help those in need.
