He talks about the same things that MCA, Gerakan, and many others have said. Well, better late than never 🙂 We can see the trend now where the leaders say they already know about the discontent/unhappiness of the community. But all the while since November 25 last year, the opposite was mentioned – “community is happy”, etc. Now all change tune 🙂 that’s politics and politicians for you! I bet they did not even began to comprehend the magnitude of their impending losses, but now have to pretend as if they knew it all along to hide their incompetence.

BN leaders must think multi-racial, says MIC sec-gen

MALACCA: There must be a massive change in the mindsets of Barisan Nasional leaders, particularly those from Umno, for the coalition to regain the people’s support, MIC secretary-general Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said.

Urging the leadership to initiate the transformation quickly, he said it was understandable for Umno to cater to the needs of the Malays but the other races should not be made to feel “not equal”.  There must be a conscious effort to provide this sense of equality. This is the secret recipe to solve the problem. The thinking of all leaders should be this: I must be multi-racial in nature,” he said.

Dr Subramaniam was speaking at a dinner on Monday hostedby the Bukit Beruang MIC branch and various groups to celebrate his re-election as Segamat MP and his appointment as Human Resources Minister.

He urged party leaders at the grassroots level to hold dialogues with the leaders of Umno and other component parties on the need to change their political thinking in line with new realities.  “Top leaders always react to what the grassroots want. If we can change mindsets at this level, it will be easier to accept at the top,” he said.

On the MIC’s huge losses in the March 8 general election, he said the community staged a silent revolution and had sent a strong message to the party.  Dr Subramaniam described the Hindraf gathering in November last year as the “trigger factor” that turned the community against the Government, although the simmering and discontent had been going on for a long time.

The minister said the MIC was aware of the discontent in the party for sometime but could not do much, except to manage it.  “They were listening all this while and we were just oiling the spring. But the bursting point arrived. We have to rectify this fundamental problem to regain their support,” he said.
