NEW DELHI: Besides wining second place at the World Scrabble Championship, Malaysia's top ranked player Ganesh Asirvatham created a new record by beating the maximum number of opponents simultaneously.

Ganesh, a lecturer from Klang, lost to world number three, New Zealander Nigel Richards, 0-3 in the final of the 9th edition of the championship, held in Mumbai on Monday.

Ganesh created a new world record when he played against 25 players simultaneously and defeated 21 of them, surpassing the previous record of 17 held by Stewart Holden of the United Kingdom.

"It was a big success on both accounts for Ganesh, winning the second spot in the championship and also entering the Guinness Book of World Records.

"He had a lot of crowd support in Mumbai but just failed to win the title," secretary of the Scrabble Association of India, Sam Joseph, said.

Ganesh, 28, had won several titles in his career, including the Singapore Open in 2001 and the Indian Open in 2005.

A total of 110 players from 42 countries took part in the championship sponsored by Mattel Toys India Pvt Ltd. It began on Nov 8.

The winner walked away with a cash prize of US$15,000 (RM50,000) while the runner-up received US$6,000. — Bernama
